I absolutely love Empress Dowager. She’s been trough a lot throughout her life and practically has seen everything. Nonetheless, Ruyi always manages to surprise her, either with her feelings or with her intelligence. One thing I liked from the drama is their relationship, it started with resentment and ended in admiration and respect. The details, dialogues. This drama is simply amazing.
And she's also petty and like to harm people because her life is not as good as she expected. Huixian HuangGuifei's father Gaobing made the Dowager's eldest daughter be married off far away so the Dowager gets back at him for poisoning Huixian HuangGuifei to death (pretty screwed up, why not get back at him rather than his daughter?). The previous empress Yixiu was the Dowager's rival in the harem of the previous emperor so the Dowager takes out all her anger on Ruyi. Ruyi just wants to treat her aunt like what a good niece should? The Dowager almost forces her to remain for 3 years near her aunt's grave to mourn. Ruyi was framed? Dowager just says put he the cold palace. (Wow Zhen Huan, you've already won and got on top, why aren't you taking out your anger on Yixiu rather than her niece?)

She was accused of murdering royal offspring, if found guilty she and her entire family up to 5 or 7 generations would've been executed. The crime was also so serious it couldn't have been covered up, no way the empress, hui guifei and the rest would've quiet. So the only way to keep Ruyi alive was sending her to the cold palace until they found evidence that she didn't do it.

She probably already knows the minute Shen Changzai delivered those poisoned dim sum to Ruyi's palace. The other thing is, despite Ruyi having to be in the Cold Palace to be 'protected', the other concubines and even the empress in the harem tried to have her killed. But the Dowager doesn't let Ruyi out even when the Dowager had her life saved by Ruyi in the Cold Palace. It was during that one episode that the Dowager was baited by the empress to go into the cold palace because the Dowager's eunuch told the Dowager (by the empress's order) that Ruyi was burning paper money and cursing the Dowager. After these events happened in the show, I think the Dowager is just a sadist and wanted to see Ruyi suffer.
The amount given her could be a lifetime supply if she used them sparingly. I think she was saying to not expect her to put pearls on all her clothing or have all pearl jewelry made up. She understood that less could be more when done properly.

She's teaching Ruyi not to be overly ambitious and crave power? When did Ruyi ever crave those things? She only wanted to be with her Hongli. She didn't even mind sharing him with other women. Even though her little heart must have felt uneasy with it, she understood her duties and responsibilities as part of his harem. She never plotted against the other women except when it was really necessary to protect herself and the ones she loved. The only time she actually tried to proactively hurt anyone was when she schemed against the first Empress and got her daughter married off far away. That was really tame compared to what the Empress and the other concubines did to her.

True success is when everyone get along (all the flowers bloom)". What she implies is that as long as Ruyi's end is peace, harmony and balance within the harem, and not concentration of power like the other two, she will "assist" Ruyi. And the first action she show to demonstrate this "assistance" is by keeping silent over Ruyi's scheme of poisoning herself. Through this scheme, Ruyi was able to plant a seed of mistrust in Emperor's heart, and pull the other two (Empress & Imperial Noble Consort Hui) down a notch, which is exactly what Empress Dowager want to see.

She seems to be saying she will help the ones who ask for it. Failing to gain favor with the dowager was the biggest mistake that Jia made. The noble consort and empress also failed to learn that lesson.
The Dowager Empress is reminding Ruyi that she doesn’t want Ruyi or any one concubine to fight for favor, she wants all the women to equally receive Emperor’s attention. So if Ruyi ever decides to fight dirty for favor like the other concubines, the Dowager Empress won’t accept it nor back her up.
That also the power of the Empire rests within each backer , which the concubines represented , almost all were selected from among powerful families in the kingdom ...A hundred pots / these selected concubines / blooming alluringly ....meant that the power and influence of the kingdom was ever increasing with the acceptance of each concubine ...Ruyi understood , without question .....
No royal family is going to admit, to history, that they killed each other unless it resulted in a change of emperor. Deaths and births are the only facts recorded in history. The rest is writer's imagination.

Apparently it didn't take long to uncover the truth once they looked for it. I agree it didn't make sense. Not sure how well the writers kept to the original story/book. They did eliminate a lot of violence to concentrate on the love story aspect. I think they dropped the ball on this subplot story.
Its because the clans of the empress and noble consort. At that time, both clans were important to stabilize the imperial court. The emperor was just newly crowned and needed as much backing as possible. It would also be recorded in history books that 2 of his highest ranking women killed and harmed others, which is seen as a tarnish to his reign. Which is also the reason why it was never explicitly said that the empress and noble consort did it, it was also mentioned by the emperor himself at the deathbed of the empress. Comparing their backgrounds to Consort Xian, it isn't wise to do so politically. Also a reason why the empress dowager stopped the investigation and 3 years later when the investigation starts once more the only thing they can do is throw Aruo and have her face all the blame because her backing isn't really that important. Which we can prove because before she became a concubine, she was mocked by the noble consort if she thinks she's a gege even if she isn't, unlike the empress, noble consort and consort xian. Although, this scene can be seen as a warning towards the 2 of them. Really the schemes and what not of the imperial palace is to exhausting. Shrewdness is a good quality to have.

I agree it didn't make sense. Not sure how well the writers kept to the original story/book. They did eliminate a lot of violence to concentrate on the love story aspect. I think they dropped the ball on this subplot story.
Its because the clans of the empress and noble consort. At that time, both clans were important to stabilize the imperial court. The emperor was just newly crowned and needed as much backing as possible. It would also be recorded in history books that 2 of his highest ranking women killed and harmed others, which is seen as a tarnish to his reign. Which is also the reason why it was never explicitly said that the empress and noble consort did it, it was also mentioned by the emperor himself at the deathbed of the empress.
Comparing their backgrounds to Consort Xian, it isn't wise to do so politically. Also a reason why the empress dowager stopped the investigation and 3 years later when the investigation starts once more the only thing they can do is throw Aruo and have her face all the blame because her backing isn't really that important. Which we can prove because before she became a concubine, she was mocked by the noble consort if she thinks she's a gege even if she isn't, unlike the empress, noble consort and consort xian. Although, this scene can be seen as a warning towards the 2 of them.
Really the schemes and what not of the imperial palace is to exhausting. Shrewdness is a good quality to have.

如懿從冷宮出來應該還是改變了很多。但是在某些特定的點都特別糾結。凌雲徹啊 寒香見喝藥啊 下江南斷髮啊 這幾個點都糾結的不像從冷宮出來的樣子。
可能就是要順應史實 鋪墊安排吧
