Well the STAX LP700s, Audeze LCD-X/3 , Focal Elear (and many others) sound MUCH better than a pair of HD650s, like literally two different worlds. I haven't heard the Sennheiser Orpheus before, but if they truly surpass headphones like Focal Utopia, Audeze LCD-4 and STAX SR-009 (all $4-5000 cans) then I think they're worth every penny to someone who makes $50,000 a day (many people do)

Doesnt matter. Great headphones would make your mp3s sound amazing too. Headphones dont make you able to hear the difference between MP3 and lossless. Thats snake oil. The human ear cant hear the "lost" part of lossless, its humanly impossible to hesr what mp3s compress. Nevertheless countless ABX tests show even with the best equipment, people cant tell the difference either. The whole FLAC thing is all snakeoil.
The ABX tests are done with 256kbps (itunes) and not 128kbps, admittedly 128 is a little worse, but even that's scientifically questionable. Great headphones and amps like this will only make 128 mp3s sound better. Thats it. Dont buy the lossless hype, theres no science behind it. ALL the science, from tests to actually human ability to hear, prove MP3s are indistinguishable. What audiophiles "hear" is selection bias.
MrAhuraMazda187 with denon ah d 7000 (headphone) I can hear difference between 128 and 192 kbit/s starkly. I also say you, that apple aac format (256 kbit/s) sounds better than mp3 320 kbit/s. My further insight: loudspeakers stand no chance against headphones (especially if you observe price-performance ratio)

I taken so many tests on this using my dac, amp and all my high end headphones and to me, 256 is the limit of where the detail just cant be picked up. And science supports me. All the measurements show ALL the "lost" frequencies are well above the human ear. The science just doesn't support lossless. 256 or 330 is just as good.

To be fair, they aren't really marketing these things to audiophiles. If you go to their website, you'll see a lot of buzz-words and the actual info is kind of tucked away. Somse rich guy will buy these things, just cuz, and play spotify through them with high quality streaming turned 'off'...
And in this comment section, we have everyone who thinks that just because it's headphones, it's not worth $50k. Which is probably right. But saying that you could buy a car or a house doesn't really justify it.

It's well known that live performance is often so much worse than studio quality audio. For the sake of ear enjoyment, the 50 000 $ would be well spent on the headphones. Plus they can last decades.

Also that would mean you'd generally have to actually buy a theater to get similar audio quality.

The thing about going up to 100000Hz is a little bit misleading, because everyone always goes 'well we can only hear up to 20khz' so whats the point? A frequency respone much outside that of human hearing, means the response curve for the portion of sound that we can hear is much flatter and less distorted.

Obviously when you push the limits of what we can achieve with headphones, a line will be crossed where any further improvement will increase the price by too much for anyone to be considered "worth the money".

The problem with most of the comments here come simply from people judging value by what they can afford. Are these the *best* headphones? I don't know, maybe. But if there are people out there that can afford them, and do in fact buy them, that makes them worth it, and all the power to them.

I’m considering picking up a set, only one question though - Can I option a microphone on the headphones? Looking for a new gaming headset and this seems like it was purpose built for gaming. I wish it had rgb though, kinda embarrassing to call itself a gaming headset and not even have software controlled rgb.

At a point you can just pay a musician to come into your home and play music for you. That is 100% fidelity with no interference.
Money is just paper, guys. You can't take it with you when you die. So if you have $50,000 to spend, and you want the be-all end-all of headphones, then buy it and enjoy it. Asking why someone would buy a pair of headphones for 50k when they could get them for $10 is like asking why someone would spend $500,000+ on a supercar, or $10,000+ on a custom PC. It's because they can and because they want to.

Yea but those super expensive stuff come with huge perks and advantages as well as ascetics. What does this have to offer than other high to medium end headphones which are a huge fraction of this price.
Some people (myself included) enjoy sitting in that perfect sweet spot between your high end tower speakers, or sitting in the corner listening to your favorite songs (on cd of course) with your high end headphones. I personally would label us as audiophiles (or for me, speaker nerds).
I got a pair for my own pleasure for 45K dollas. The first time I used these babies, I raised the volume so high, I busted my eardrum. Now, I have to spend 50K dollas in medical bills and my hearing device. Now, that's what I call ironic

I don't care how good they sound, the only people buying them are the ones who want to brag about how rich they are that they spent 50 grand on HEADPHONES.
They buy the headphones open the case, and them listen to music for 2 hours. They then get up to go to the bathroom and trip over the headphone cable... The cable rips out of one of the headphones. I then take a sip of my tea and say, "Well... You fucked up when you bought those headphones. Now you fucked up in not only wasting $50,000, but you also broke them and will never get your money back."
