I think pleated lampshades are dust collectors. Many of the older ones are lined with a plastic like liners which crack the older they are and the more heat they're subjected to. The ancestor portrait was a steal even if it did have some sun fading but in the right space color-wise, it can work nicely. The bamboo style frame at that size also makes it a great deal. The carpet is classic and works with so many decorating choices.
We too have no dressing room access in too many thrifts these days. Yes, GW is all over the place price and selection wise. I'd love to see your take on estate sales, vintage, antiques, and multi-vendor booth malls.
Love, love, love Decatur, GA for the shops (thrifts, vintage, books) but also for the Asian markets, Indian restaurants, and spectacular Farmer's Market choices. Hope your day was filled with good food and more good finds. As always, love the videos!

One important thing to remember about thrift stores: it's all about timing. When do they restock? It can be completely random, so a lot of thrift shopping is dependent on luck. The most successful shoppers go often to the same stores.

I read that Tuesday is a good day to shop at Goodwill because people donate stuff they couldn't sell at tag sales. IDK, but it could be.

The narration of these videos is so relaxing, I love that!
I’m in Minneapolis, and a huge thrifter and the Value Villages here are not really impressive at all and I typically don’t stop there unless I have something specific in mind I can’t find elsewhere. Goodwill stores here are definitely price-gouging on anything they can, and not being able to try clothes on in store anymore is super inconvenient and annoying too.

In my area we definitely have to watch out for creepers who will see something they want and “shop” out of our carts.
I had to wrestle a barely worn alpaca coat away from someone who thought I wasn’t looking!😾
It looked great on me for many winters. 😊
Looking forward to your next project.

That was a funny story! There must be something about animal skin or wool that brings out the beastly behavior in some people🤨. I had a similar experience at a thrift store, I found an authentic, real Australian white sheepskin rug, a large one. I had it in my hands standing at the register waiting to pay and some woman came up to me and said "are you gonna buy that?" and of course I said "yes"😛, and I still have it. Maybe she thought she would intimidate me out of buying it? However I'm not spineless.

When you mentioned it being hard to buy a thrifted suit it reminded me of our thrift adventure earlier this year. My family and I were on vacation on Cape Cod late May this year. The weather was colder and windier than the others anticipated so we popped into a thrift store for them to buy an extra layer. (Sweatshirt, sweater or jacket.) Everyone found something good but I, the one that did not need something warmer, was the one that hit the jackpot! Casually browsing a very small collection of suits and sports coats I found a double breasted tuxedo. I already own one and rarely have an opportunity to wear it. But I tried on the jacket and except for the sleeves being a small fraction of an inch shorter than I would like but was near perfect. They did have a dressing room. I popped in and the pants were a PERFECT fit. Waist and length. My Levis are 32W 34L so it exceedingly rare to find pants in retail stores that fit. At $5 I couldn't resist. Got home to Virginia as I was checking the pockets before taking to the dry cleaners noticed that it has a label from a British clothing brand that had a warrant from the Queen Mother!

Wowza, the 2 Goodwills you visited looked much swankier than the one in my city. Being a two public University location (Denton, Tx) there are multiple thrift stores with varying degrees of selection. While the turnover of college students is great for curbside and thrift store finds, there's also more competition with thrift savvy students. The desktop organizer reminds me of your 2 cabinet solution next to the fireplace in your bedroom. Thrifting is a great way to satisfy that basic hunter-gatherer aspect of human nature. LOL Cheers Andrew. PS, While a conical pleated lampshade has it's place, a simple drum is much more versatile in my opinion.

My local Goodwill has the certain color tags that are 50% off for that week, but on Sundays, items are just $1. I find that the best days to shop at my Goodwill are Sundays for dollar days and Tuesdays when things are restocked. I do not have a Value Village near me in New Jersey, but we do have quite a lot of other thrift stores such as Salvation Army and The Arc as well as some smaller independently owned thrift shops. By the way, you got an amazing deal on that gorgeous rug! Queenie has good taste!

Couldn't find any Value Village stores where I live (FL)

I’m in Western Canada and I have not had great luck at Value Village for furniture or housewares. My daughter has found some of her favourite cool clothes from there though. Value Village is a little pricy compared to other thrift stores in my area. I prefer our local hospital auxiliary thrift store. Great items snd amazing prices.

I enjoy going to goodwill and see a dollar store plate with a 3.99 price on it. No value village near me. Some of these thrift stores are price gouging imo. I move on and find another more reasonably priced store. There are two near me that support a food pantry and the other an animal shelter. Usually willing to price negotiate on some of their items too. 💖💖🎶🎶

In my area Value Village is known as Savers. I find the couple of savers I have near me far superior than the goodwill by me (barely any furniture, extremely hit or miss) and Salvation Army (pricing is much higher). I find I like my savers much better because I usually find something interesting, fair pricing compared to most thrift stores by me, well organized and pretty clean. Plus if you donate items you get a coupon. I’ve also been to the mega goodwill in Seattle which was huge and had some great finds so it clearly depends on each one.

I'm in Massachusetts, we don't have Value Village. We have Savers (which is under the same parent company as VV). Maybe this is solely based on our different locations, but Savers is cleaner, better organized, usually substantially larger and with all that being said, PRICEY! I also watch those Canadian UA-camrs and their trips to Value Village. I'd say I have a similar experience to their shopping trips. There are some real gems but the prices have gone up over the past few years. Thanks for sharing your trips with us!! I love seeing you gravitate toward the same stuff I'm into :)

Thrifting in my area Value Village was always last on the list for pricing until Goodwill caught up to surpass price gauging in recent years. They are both about the same here for hit or miss content. To find best prices I go to actual non profits, like Kiwanis, Soroptomist, several Animal rescue/ Humane society related and of course Habitat for Humanity! Prices always rock and it just feels better when you know it's for a good cause. ( I also only donate exclusively to these shops)😻

Score with the rug! I'm glad it passed 🖤Queenie's🖤 approval! You have good self control, I rarely leave a thrift store without something. For a cost suits can be tailored to fit you perfectly, depending upon suit quality it may be worth it. Good tailoring can make things look almost custom made. If you like shape but not color perhaps spray paint basket? But that would also be an additional project, but a relatively quick one. The silver lamp was indeed nice.

Value Village in NC used to have such better selection of clothing than Goodwill. They also had 50% off days regularly and were large department store size. I now live near Spokane WA and the 50% off days are gone but the selection is still pretty good. Unfortunately I have to drive over an hour to get there so it happens rarely esp with the sale incentive gone. Goodwill has become more expensive and the selection is ok but also I look at the business practice and Goodwill scores lower. I prefer the one off thrift stores where the more of the money is going to the cause. As far as the look of the store, I’d say it’s hit or miss. I’d expect better deals from a janky looking store and I wouldn’t mind shipping there if that’s true. I’m more of a bins gal these days because *cheap and the thrill of the hunt. I recently scored a mid century sewing machine for 6 bucks as well as a king down comforter and two new hotel style pillow for a few bucks. It’s def not fancy but can score some amazing deals. Have you tried the bins Andrew? It’s a great place to score upcycle material at least, if not some actual good clothing finds.

The wire basket would have been known as a waste paper basket.
Think in terms of a days of old writer or journalist trying to type their novel on an old clanky type writer with no way to erase or delete, making a mistake ripping that page out of the typewriter and balling it up and tossing it into the basket.
With it holding nothing more than balls of crumpled paper it didn’t need to have a liner or bag in it.
Alas I am not creative enough to think of a modern use for it.
Edited to add I just thought of something, if you owned an apple or orange tree you could use it to display/house your harvests! Maybe?

nothing wrong with that lampshade, it is my preferred style and colour. (of course my house's style is sort of stuck in the 90's . . . ) I've been disappointed with VV (location Saskatchewan) lately, prices are getting so close to new. I used to buy my work shirts there, given what I do for a living I am hard on clothes, but to save just a couple bucks? no longer worth it. My current favourite thrift store is the Mennonite Central Committee Village Green.

I'm in the Boston area, and we don't have Value Village that I know of. We have a ton of Savers stores, which do pretty well. The Goodwill stores near me truly jack up the prices on literally everything, so I don't visit them too much. Salvation Army has a back area where all picture frames are $1, and I got a $250 painting that was in a frame that nobody realized was from an artist featured in auctions regularly, so that was a win.

I have to say I have such envy watching you and other UA-camrs in the US, UK and Canada thrifting. In Australia the prices are generally high and the quality poor. Have the pleated shade on lamp base I really like, but it was old, had aged to a dirty tan. Had redone room and shade was the one thing that was 'off' so brushed on a few coats of white chalk paint. Looks brand new, very clean and bright. Not a light which needs to be turned on that often, because the paint makes it appear blotchy, but the visual, when off, was exactly the look I wanted.

Good will used to be great but about 15 yrs ago there was a big shift and now jeans are $20-25 and a rug? That’s be $80-100 now.

Hi Andrew! Yeah, I've never been to a Value Village. I'm like you, not thrilled about that place, not there isn't ever anything good, but it's funny how you just know when you walk in. It looked like you were in the Goodwill in Tyrone? How can I tell? I can't lol. Just thought maybe it was that one, I know, they all are alike right? haha. I wish there were more thrift stores around, but it seems like we only have Goodwills mainly, which is fine, but they are a bit high sometimes. Great find on the rug and the pencil/brush holder. We went to an estate sale a few weeks ago, those are always hit or miss too, but pricey. Good luck on thrifting, I too think it's just hit or miss.❤
