I have had "Oil Down" before when some University students from Grenada came to Jamaica one summer, and we had a nice send off when they were returning home, it was so delicious. I loved it. I have never seen it cooked before, but I hope to make it in the future. In that same send off, the Trinidadian students cooked 'Pelau', which was also very delicious. That summer school was the best ever! We had so much fun, eating different meals from the Caribbean, and dancing to different Caribbean music etc. It was a blast! Love my Caribbean brothers and sisters, the culture, the music and the food.
I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! Pelau is quite enjoyable as well. You know good food!!
Yse we need to mix more and love who we are
@@jackie9068 indeed!
@Maxine Simms yes it is pretty different. Really tasty. I hope you give it a try.

My Grenadian friends told me about this but I have never seen or tried it. It looks delicious and hope to try it soon. Sending positive vibrations from Jamaica.

Tell Uncle Leon he is tops at the oil down. We just didn't know about his cooking skills....I am a neighbor; so happy to have found out. Look out for me visiting the family soon.....
😂😂 I’ll definitely let him know. Yes his cooking skills are on point!
First recipe I have seen without pork! Looks delicious yum!😋
It’s really good! The meats that are added are really up to the persons preparing the dish.
Hi Nezzle! I came across your vlog couple months ago after watching a similar Jamaican vlog. I am Jamaican but love your island. My hubby lived and worked there for a few years so I was able to spend some time there and had oil down on couple occasions. I call it my second home. Love your vlog and your energy, I even introduced it to my daughters. Wish you all the best. 😊👍👍
Hi 😊 I’m glad you enjoy my videos. Thanks for introducing them to your daughters. You have good taste. Oil down is wonderful! Thanks for watching!

It’s really good. I’ve had it with corn as well and it’s really good! Welcome to the Nezzle Fam! Hope to chat with you more 😊
@@Nezzle looking forward to it
the sound of the dumpling is the most comforting ASMR sound, lol
I like the eating of the dumpling lol
Greetings from jamaica 🇯🇲 Trelawny that's how we like our dumplings nice and tight.
That’s the only way to eat dumplings!
In Jamaica our equivalent is Run-down. Breadfruit and such is cooked separately. But the fish is cooked with coconut milk and salted mackerel fish.
Boy dis more than run down. What never go into that pot nuh create yet. I felt tired half way through the video 😊
Yes it’s a bit different to run down. I’d like to try run down one day. This pot had a lot of ingredients but everything came together really well and it tasted great!
Hello I visted a community called Effort in Clarendon Jamaica many years ago. They cooked yam and other ground provisions in a huge pot and it was flavoured with corned pork and coconut milk. I guess that was the Jamaican version of the Grenadian Oil Down. I cant remember what they called it but it was tasty. I remember meeting a Grenadian friend on mission to Haiti. She called Oil Down a work of art. I would definitly agree with all that went into the pot. Keep our culture alive through food.
There’s nothing quite like oil down. It is indeed a work of art. Many islands throughout the Caribbean have similar dishes, but none are quite the same. In fact, even in Grenada many people do it a bit differently. Nonetheless it’s a magnificent dish.
We call it one pot
This is my first time to hear about this dish, i love exploring different culture. Oil Down is made with fresh ingridients, amazing.
Yes and it’s incredibly tasty. I hope you’re able to try it one day. It’s delicious.
I'm from Jamaica, but I've never seen or heard of that dish. It looks fantastic! Would love to try it, don't like Turkey though. Uncle Leon is the Chef!👍👏 nice. 👏👏
You should try it. You can use whatever meats you enjoy so if turkey isn’t for you then of course you can leave it out.
In Jamaica we call it Bullo slush. My eldest sister loves to make it. Taste sooo good, but one time unfortunately, the pot turn over on her belly.
Johnny Bristol it turned over on her belly? Oh my goodness!! I hope it wasn’t hot!
@@Nezzle very hot. But she makes it so good.
Johnny Bristol I hope she is okay now. That couldn’t have been a nice experience.
You guys oil down is totally different to ours in Trinidad.Basically we just put coconut milk, pumpkin, breadfruit of course, dumplings and callaloo bush sometimes, salt beef or pigtail and hot peppers to taste. You guys put wayyy plenty meats. This is new to me with the saffron powder being put into it.I would realllyyyy love to taste it.Oh,BTW tell uncle next time do not waste the breadfruit, maybe I could have gotten a plate.Lol
Lol yes we told him he was wasting it so he started cutting off less of it. Our oil down is very different to what trinis call oil down so you should definitely give it a try. It’s really tasty.
I'm from Trinidad and i always add small pieces of corn in my oil down. But my BF from Grenada has promise as soon as boarders open.im heading there for their oil down
@@lindyannborneo1411 I am right behind you on the flight. 😀😀
Many people in Trinidad make it exactly like this since many Trinis have had Grenadian and Vincey ancestors. My parents make it exactly like this, I like mine with chicken, pigtail, crab and a little salted mackerel and corn…. Yummy
My cousin in law made a vegan version for me 1990 when I visited Grenada, breadfruit, provisions, whole ochroes, dasheen bush, coconut milk, it was delicious.
This oil down look delicious. I loved when my mother made it on a rainy day.
It was excellent! I can do with another plate right now. Oil down always hits the spot for me.
OK, so all these years I thought I knew how to make oil down. But by far this is the very best I have seen, thank you for teaching me a new method, your uncle is a genius,
I will attempt to follow this recipe, so I will be viewing this over and over and taking notes
Wonderful! I look forward to hearing how it turns out!
This is rich people oil down, poor people use pigtail or saltfish, breadfruit, provisions, ochro, fresh green seasonings, dasheen bush, whole ochro, coconut milk, fireside to cook it on, steam everything, tastes divine
Uncle Leon is the bomb!! He could be the next top chef! Encourage him to do more cooking videos and watch your ratings go up.lol🤠we all love food. Never heard of an oil down but I love it, looks healthy and delicious! Great video!
He is!! The man can cook! I’ve never eaten anything from him I didn’t like. Getting him on camera to make it took about a year of begging though lol so it might be awhile till his next cooking appearance. But who knows, maybe he’ll see these comments and change his mind.

This is so mouth-watering. Been longing to eat this meal. I must say, it ain't for the faint-hearted cos it takes quite a lot of effort to prepare. PS. I'm a Newbie UA-camr living here who's African. Stumbled on your channel few weeks ago and I'm loving it. ❤️

Yes we have used back and neck before too but it makes it a bit more oily (though debatably a bit more tasty lol).
We call in run down in Jamaica but we don’t put any vegetables in it. We cook it with salt fish or salt mackerel. We don’t call it gut we call it the heart of the breadfruit 🇯🇲
Yeah we have a lot of similarities between the islands yet we maintain some differences. A lot of people have drawn the similarity between oil down and run down. I’d like to try run down one day.
This is nothing like Jamaican run dung
Yes we do have a version of this. Maybe you are too young to know it. You cook down the ground provisions into the coconut milk with salt fish. You should try it.
