Just a few notes, you can hold the glow plugs on for up to two minutes before cranking when cold and when it starts turn them on until it clears up. And snug the diagonal braces up on the blade, it will keep from wearing the pins out anymore and prevent the swaying.
Well technically this is called a raised beam deck it designed this way to accomplish a lower deck height to allow you to haul taller equipment and still be under legal height but the raised beam are nice to help keep equipment from sliding off while loading especially in icy conditions
Back when those machines were produced, diesel fuel had more sulfur in it which lubricated the pumps better( at least that is what I read). We have some older machines we bought a few years back and added a lot of the Diesel Fuel Kleen to the fuel and some anti algae additive to the fuel tanks as well. Also, put a bunch of engine oil flush in the engine oil and changed the oil twice within about 30 minutes of each other to get all the old sludge out. The engines started much better, oil stays cleaner longer and don't have near the smoke they used to have at start up when they were cold. Likely make your nice old Cat live a longer life...... Also, we changed all the fluids too. Yes, it can be pricey but we have found that many people don't add the correct type of fluid in these machines over the years or flat out don't change anything at all. Good luck with it....it gets in your blood.
I used to run an older 8H on some dam jobs working pans and cuts ant it was a fine old machine. Pony motor start and a straight pipe with rippers. Had a ball on it, a D7F and an old 6B straight drive on the dams themselves besides everything else. They're tough as woodpecker lips. Glad you got it. Work it hard after the new set of gaskets. Got to get them good and hot and then they'll get the job done! Blessings! and a winch is a GOOD idea!
After spending a good part of the 1960’s and 70’s in Vermont (I was going to say ‘farm country’ but it was all farm country lol) I really enjoy and appreciate your love of older farm and construction machinery. It brings back memories 😊
Well I appreciate that you appreciate that thank you!! If guys like me don't preserve and save some of this old iron it will disappear and the next generation won't get a chance to see it
Congratulations on your purchase. Those old cats are good machines. A little tlc and you will have it out working in no time. Looking forward to seeing more videos on it.
I ran a D-8 for a while, pushed pans, did some clearing and it is a good idea for protection. A winch is a must for any compromised ground. Never had any start issues because it had a pony motor. Good purchase, hope she serves you well, I like the older Cats.🙂
Awesome!!!! my grandpa's last Cat that he drove was an 8K with a logging winch with arch on the back and a BIG U blade on the front he built roads for Glendale Plywood out in southern oregon... I remember as a kid riding on the cat and he let us steer it and ride with him when he was building roads in the mountains
@@dirtgrainsteel the stories my brother and I could tell you about GP building roads and the miss haps along the way. We even have some old school 8mm film of his logging in Oregon converted to digits I can send it to you if you want. Btw what my twin said you have a cool channel that we found through DP checking out your 220. 🍺
70,000# of awsomeness! Spent more than a few hours on ours, back in the day. One thing I might add, don't try to jump start it using 500a cables, with a gas truck. Don't ask how I know.
Thank you! I did have the throttle alittle high when I started it because I wasn't sure were the kill position was and I think it may have over fueled alittle bit but your right it started pretty good....I sent the serial to a friend of mine and according to him it's a D8H high horse later model
Congrats on the kitty cat. When it starts you can turn the glow plug switch back on and the ole girl will clean up sooner. When starting pull throttle open till it clicks then push back until you feel pressure.
One of Clint's boys does decals. He may have the files for a D8, know he has Cat decals. Happy for you, it's a good buy. Imagine the plow that would pull! Mind Blown! lol
Congratulations on getting your D8. When you were naming projects for this winter, I would just like to put my vote in for the 5020. One of my favorite tractors from my youth. That and a D21 Allis Chalmers, hard to beat those two old work horses. Really look forward to your videos Brandon. Dirt, Grain and Steel and a cup of coffee at 4am on Sunday Morning. Best way to start the week.
Thank you! The 5020 is definitely something I want to get fixed I'm thinking about just throwing a set of new bearings in it and see what happens temporarily until I can do a major over haul the crank shaft looks good and old timers have suggested just put bearings in it so I might just try it I'm not out a whole lot if it just spins one again

Heat glow plugs for a minute or longer if cold and crank it and when it comes to life hit the glow plugs until it smooths out leaving the throttle in idle. Resist the urge to give it fuel above ideal and it will actually smooth out sooner. Just taking a break after cranking up my cat with a pony engine. Awesome machine find.

Nice Cat, Brandon. What year is it? A homestead channel in Idaho I watch bought a D8 to make a road up the mountain they live on and they had zero experience with them. They learned fast though and even had to do a major repair themselves on it. The channel is Ambition Strikes if you are interested. Oh, and another channel I watch (Pacific Northwest Hillbilly) bought a D4 that was in really bad shape and rebuilt it from the ground up. It had been sitting in a forest for several decades. He sure did a nice job on it.
Wow sounds good, a late model 8H maybe 73 or 74 just before the 8K anyway she sounds good and good job with not using too much Either, ya some undercarriage work looks likely Expensive as u know, but generally looking like a solid dozer and a great find good work bro
You can tell Dad doesn't like the camera. Does Dads Strength work with you guys full time or does he have another job? Sure enjoy your real life videos and enjoy seeing you and Dad and Dads Strength working together.
Those injector tips should be very inexpensive still. Open up the rack housing and make sure all of the individual pumps are timed correctly. Definitely get the shop manual if you didn’t get one with the dozer. Looking forward to seeing this old girl pushing some dirt. Just subscribed!

The drive sprockets look like they need to be replaced; the top and bottom rollers look worn. Clint at C&C is the guru...good luck.
The sprockets aren't to bad it's the bottom rollers that bother me they are hitting the pins in the rails
