    When I worked in my uncles junk yard back in the late 70’s we used a quart of ATF down the carb and it would free up sticking valves and lubricate the cylinder walls worked great although it would smoke the neighborhood out, you can use some two stroke oil in the gas too. Love seeing this old Chevy coming back to life👍

    • @billywird
      @billywird 3 місяці тому +3

      Yes sir and one can also mix in some transmission fluid in with the gas and also run a quart of transmission fluid in with the oil to help clean out sludge in the engine. Friend of mine that had a repair shop used to pour transmission fluid down into the carburetor to help with sticking valves and he claimed that it also helped break up carbon buildup on the pistons that was a result of short low speed trips that people would take in intown usage and contributed to the vehicle running bad. Of course, one has to get the revs up as the transmission fluid would stall the engine and you are right it does smoke things up quite a bit. People who did not drive their cars much would have the malady of gas starting to gum up and of course intake valves get stuck so the transmission fluid would relieve that.

    • @JamesSorenson
      @JamesSorenson  3 місяці тому +5

      This one had quite a concoction of fluids poured down it at some point. It had a combination of Marvel, Kroil, PB Blaster, ATF, and I believe kerosene all in it at one point or another. It smoked pretty heavy in the first startup (on the other video), but has cleared up pretty well since.

      I run a quart of ATF in my 1988 Ford F250 diesel truck's fuel filter when I change it. It's also good for diesel fuel injectors and pumps. It cleans and lubricates them, but as you said, it smokes something fierce until you burn it all up.

    • @billywird
      @billywird 3 місяці тому

      @@kman-mi7su Yes sir you can also add a quart when fueling up the truck and it will work just fine. I sold a 283 Chevrolet engine to a friend of mine and it had around 80,000 miles on it. Well he cleaned it up and put a new timing chain set on it and my friend who had the repair shop suggested that he add a quart of ATF to help clean the internals. The drag racing legend Don Garlits when he had a auto repair column said that he always added a quart of ATF to his gas on his Dodge tow truck he used for transporting his top fuel car to the races.

    Oh the memories! Back in 1976 I traded my 68 Impala SS for a 71 Chevelle SS with a 350. 6 months later it was getting 30 miles to a quart of oil. So I drove it home from college and the 120 miles and added 2 quarts at 60. Next morning at 8AM went to the salvage yard looking for an engine. He had a rebuilt 350 truck engine that was for his son’s Vet. But he totaled it out. Got it for $500. My father helped me take the hood off at 9AM. At 2:00 pm next day, I was test driving it. Got my dad to help put the hood on and left at 3:00. It started popping and backfiring on the trip back. Figured out that the spark plugs had paint on them. Changed them and it ran great. I truly miss that car! It was my favorite.

      The goal for now was to just get the car running and driving with as little effort as possible. It's far too often that people pick things up and let it snow ball with always trying to do one more thing and then suddenly years have gone by without ever putting a mile on the car. In this particular case, I wanted to see if the car could actually run and drive in its original condition, much in the same way it was parked decades ago. I have plans to drop in an L78 that I've had for a while, and I'll likely start restoring things at that time.
