    I WOULD RECOMMEND USING A TRADE PAINT MATCHING SERVICE LIKE VALSPAR (IN B&Q) OR JOHNSTONES AND GET YOUR PAINT MATCHED TO F&B COLOURS, IT'S MUCH BETTER PAINT 👍🏼
    NOTE ON PAINT: Every paint and every colour will look different in every room/house. There are lots of factors to think about, ie. which direction the room is facing (N, E, S, W), how much natural light it gets, the tone/warmth of the altricial light, the colour of the furniture within that room etc.

    FLOORING:
    I'm afraid our flooring was discontinued a couple of years ago but it was from Tapi Carpets so I'm sure they have something similar.

    I’m a painter and decorator by trade. Walls that haven’t been painted on previously NEED to be primed. If you just fire paint onto a plastered wall the paint won’t adhere and dry properly leaving it looking patchy. If you had primed first you would have only needed 2 coats after to get that perfect F&B finish. It tell you on the Farrow and Ball tins that they recommend using primer before using their paint. It’s definitely the best paint I’ve used. I will always recommend it when pricing a job. £48 a tin but the you get twice as much coverage compared to the likes of Dulux.

      @@herroyalhighness5634 as long as the colour on the wall is similar in tone to the F&B colour then yes that’s fine.

      I'll echo what you said. PRIMER! With F&B use the F&B primer specific to the paint color and sheen you've chosen. F&B finish coats are thicker than most others and do cover more wall space IMO. One coat finish is fine as long as you use their primer. If repainting: Regardless of the original color and sheen, I would use the F&B primer then the finish coat. I have noticed a second finish coat (applied after the first coat has completely dried out a day later) does add some depth of color but its not necessary with an F&B finish coat. As to the cost, yes it's relatively expensive but if it's an important room that you spend a lot of time in, I think it's worth the price. Buy and test samples first (remembering that the primer will alter the depth of color in the final result).

      What u mean by coverage. Does one dip of the roller travel further on the wall? I used Dulux paint recently and i could only get one row (top to bottom) with one roll in the tray.

  • @EmmaHill
    @EmmaHill  4 роки тому +66

    Just a few additional notes on the F&B paint:
    - We did try with both a brush and a roller and both were equally as bad as the other.
    - it took 6 coats to finally get an even coverage 🙃 and yes I had to buy more cans 😭
    - We were advised not to buy the primer by the pro in the shop, because they said it does nothing 🤣
    - Whilst paying for the paint a Decorator who was stood behind me in the queue said “you’re gonna regret that love” 🤣
    There are many people who have used F&B paint who think it’s great and don’t have any of the issues that we had, BUT, there are more who have had the same experience as us and most professional decorators won’t use it or charge their clients more if they really want to use it because it’s such a faff. The issue is that you don’t know until you try and that’s a lot of money to gamble with so having tried Valspar V700 paint (and loved it!) we would advise to use that and get it colour matched to F&B if you love their colours. Remember my tip from the last vlog to get an accurate match 👍🏼

      I’ve always thought F&B was just becoming a ‘cool thing’ social media folk say they’ve used. It didn’t matter what colour it was, it was just so they could say ‘oh it’s F&B 😂’. I’ve heard it ain’t great either xx

      Totally agree about F&B, me and my husband have a painting business (spray painting) and my husband hates F&B.
      We live in Wimborne in Dorset where F&B originated from and going back many many years ago ( showing my age now ) if we ever got a job in that didn't matter about the quality of paint, we used to go down to the F&B factory, where you could go in and they would mix it for you, while you waited. you could literally get a massive bucket mixed for £11! We knew the quality was rubbish but it was cheap as chips, so we didn't mind.
      Then a few years later they got the 'English heritage' stamp of approval and the prices went through the roof! but they quality stayed the same.
      My husband point blank refuses to use them any more, even though we spray a lot of antique bed steads and have customers who ask for a F&B colour, but we just colour match by eye and have sprayed thousands of beds over the years and no one has ever said anything about the colour not being F&B.
      BTW we use Valspar for 90% of the work we do, as the quality is excellent.
      Sorry about this being so long, but have watch a few of your videos about F&B and keep meaning to let you know a little bit of the background of the company.
      I'm loving this new series btw, but do worry a bit about the both of you when you start doing renovations, as you both seem to get a little stressed when living in messy spaces, but please try to chill and enjoy the process as it won't be like that for long.

    I used to swear by Valspar's colour matching for F&B paint, but now I've gone over to the dark side and would never use Valspar on a period property. Long story short, I've learned from a heritage house surveyor that latex-based paints and those made with other synthetic binders (e.g Valspar) and modern gypsum plasters are not breathable and trap moisture within walls, leading to damp problems.
    So now, I would go for lime plaster in a period property and breathable paints such as F&B, Earthborn, Little Greene and Brouns & Co. I also found that on exterior wood, Valspar colour matched copies of F&B paint fade a lot faster than the F&B originals and as it's non-breathable, it started to cause timber rot on my timber framed windows after about 4 years.
    Totally agree that professional painters/decorators don't like using F&B, mainly because the paint is pigment rich and doesn't use synthetic binders (which give paint that creamy feel that helps with application) so F&B paint doesn't glide as easily when applying it and you definitely need to use a primer to cover up test swatches etc. to avoid an uneven finish. A bit of prep goes a long way.

    I have no idea what your problem was with F & B. I've used it all over my house and love it. I used Tallow in Estate Emulsion finish for my dining and living rooms, and in Modern Emulsion for my kitchen and stairways. And Pointing for ceilings. The effect is absolutely breath-taking. So is the price. Tallow is the kind of vanilla creamy white you'd find in some Parisian apartments. There's a hint of pink in it that makes your skin look lovely. It also makes people happy.

      She did not prime, nor prep the walls properly ... it doesn't take much time or energy to learn how to do something properly. You would think they would have figured that out after the 1st or 2nd coat and before bashing a reputable brand. Sounds more like she is put off they wouldn't "kindly gift" her product as they have others?

Two coats over the light grey that was on the walls previously and its perfect. Not patchy, covered well and easy to use and only cost me £16, win win situation. I know rollers are popular to apply paint but I always use a paint pad, find them so much easier and a lot less messy. Each to his own. Glad to see you re-hung the door.

    I tell all my clients off for painting sample squares direct to the wall. Paint the colour onto sheets of a4 to see the colour. Then you don’t have to sand all the squares out prior to painting and also colour will appear slightly different depending where it is in the room.
    Haven’t got to end of video before typing this (so apologies if you found out) but go to a Johnstones trade decorating centre, they will mix all FB colours in a better quality paint for a lot less money. Cut then roll, rather than the other way around.

    The room looks lovely Emma. For me personally, paint is just paint. My understanding of the “finish” is that it depends on the quality of the surface underneath more than the paint itself. I understand gloss, satin, matt, and chalk finishes but really, it is just paint! Most people change up colour schemes every few years so its not like it’s there forever. Doesn’t compare to a classic style designer handbag that lasts forever. And no, sadly I don’t own anything designer due to lack of funds ☹️

    The pro in the shop should have explained that the walls needs to be evenly coloured (free from any paint tests) if you're going to skip using a primer. One layer of primer on the whole wall + 2 coats of paint would have worked fine! Good luck with the rest of your renovation, it's looking great :)

    Decorating is my trade and if using farrow and ball paint, you should really prime walls with their primers
    Also a decent size and quality roller helps over diy ones.
    Johnstones decorating centres colour code match pretty much all designer paint and their products are geared up for day to day life and not stately homes where there are no children etc
    Stay away from valspar

    I have been using Farrow and Ball paint for years in 3 different houses. All rooms have only required 2 coats, leaving a gorgeous depth of colour I have only found with Farrow and Ball. With the state of her walls she should have painted one coat of white paint to cover all the dark spots and then applied the paint.

    Of course the F&B did not perform as it should have ... you have to not only prime, but you HAVE TO USE THE CORRECT PRIMER. I'm a NYC based Interior Designer (10+ years of experience) and whenever I paint (my own house) I always prime and if it is a color I always have the primer tinted to the color. F&B is really unmatched when it comes to their pigment and pigment is what you are paying the premium price for.

    • @tijuanaforeplay8232

      Do you recommend a specific primer brand or is tinting the primer the most crucial part?

    • @NicoleDufourDuRocher
      @NicoleDufourDuRocher 4 роки тому

      Tijuana Foreplay Farrow & Ball specifies the proper primer based on the color. If I’m not using F&B (Benjamin Moore - which I do not believe is available in the UK) then I always tint the primer, it is well worth the slight upcharge. If I’m using a budget brand I always use Valspar Simplicity which you can have tinted to match any brand’s color (note: may not be exact but super close and it will not perform the same as high end brands over time) Also, if you’re deadset agaibst primer, paint swatches on paper then tape to tbe wall with painter’s (blue or green) tape. Also, do not use masking tape either (like Emma has) it doesn’t prevent paint bleed (as she discovered) and it can damage surfaces leaving behind residue or taking up finish:paint.

      Farrow & ball is expensive because of the packaging, brand, shipping fees and maybe quality. They don't tell you a lot about their paint on tje data sheet, which is a problem if you want to buy it or to sell it. I would advise you to seek paints that has 40+ volume solids in it. That indicates you if the paints has good coverage. Also look for the level of sheen. It tells you how shiny the paint is. Also other tips, always buy paint from someone who could tell you those things. That would avoid you headaches. See you!

      I love Farrow and Ball, however, I know it's not the best coverage wise, it CAN look patchy, and marks incredibly easily but I still adore it. Colour matching never gets the same texture. I love the chalkiness and how it looks different colours in different lights. I also use Fired Earth paint which is very similar, same price, but I love the chalkiness of it. They are very authentic to paints in the Georgian and Victorian periods which is what I was looking for, not a satin or very flat Matt. I suppose it all depends on taste and preference.

    • @EmmaHill
      @EmmaHill  4 роки тому +1

      I guess it will be different for everyone depending on the walls/lighting etc etc. But we just weren't very impressed, especially with the green wall (which had no drawings/markings on it and Simon had done a white base layer) where it went really patchy until about the 4th coat. 🤷‍♀️

    • @jenniferboyle2865
      @jenniferboyle2865 4 роки тому +5

      Farrow and Ball is more expensive because of the way the paint is made, their paint has less binding agent, less water but much more pigment. The cheaper paints use synthetic pigment as it’s easier and cheaper to produce, Farrow and Ball only use real pigment. This is why you cannot colour match them and the cheaper paint will never look the same. Also this is why Farrow and Ball have such beautiful colours that change in different light, and have that lovely chalky finish. I guess it’s just a matter of taste!

If you have lots of contrast on the walls ie new plaster, different colours, just prime with cheep emulsion white works so does light grey for darker colours.

    Wow, as someone who likes to paint if I’d have had to do 5 coats I would have lost it 🤯. What a costly nightmare. We’ve never had an issue with cheaper paints, Johnston’s Matt emulsion is fab for ceilings (lots of decorators use this) and on walls have always used crown or dulux, apart from getting a colour specifically matched to a shade in some wallpaper at the decorators trade centre. Like your valspar service they name it and have it on file so you can go back anytime you need more. Why is F&B the first choice for so many vloggers or people on Instagram more so now than before.
