Great advice Scott! Far too often people jump right into their heavy working sets before getting that elbow joint warm and loose.

Thanks for posting this Scott! I suffered an injury to my elbow a few months back and worked hard to recover my range of motion it's not perfect but good enough to not bother me to lift so I'll definitely add this in when warming the joint up before hand!

Warm up is important and so is soft tissue work using bands. I might add that elbow pain is not always about "elbows" but can also be due to "the chain" including wrist and shoulder impingement's or weakness/imbalances (especially shoulders). I'm also discovering that my mattress is killing my shoulders, lower back and hips. Since sleeping on the floor (lying on back using pillows), I'm noticing a tremedous difference in correcting many problems I've had for years and years in these same areas (shoulders, wrists and hips). It's a great idea for those who do heavy lifting and body building to investigate the benefits of sleeping on the floor for correcting such issues and maintaining proper alignment in these areas.

Thanks +ScottHermanFitness! I have been having elbow issue for a while. I will sure to use your tips next time when i work out my tricep. i want to add another alternative to close grip bench press. I found that doing close grip bench press on ez-bar puts less pressure on my elbow since that bar is much more elbow friendly compare to olympic bar. Also it helps me isolate my tricep and puts less stress on my chest.

Wear elbow covers, NOT tight straps, and start with a couple of light warm up sets.
Then if you do them, do Tricep push downs 1st using soft individual grips or a V bar, NOT straight bar.

scott the second variation of the sckull crusher is harder, your working against gravity and the full weight is on your elbow. the conventinal way to do it when you hit your skull is easier because getting closer to 180 or full look out is easier because gravaty is going to be in straight line with your arm. go watch jeff cavalier from athlean-x he has a video on that and also im an ingenieer and its simple angles and math.

Scott, when doing skull crushers like you demonstrated at 5:03, what effect would using a thumbless grip have on the exercise? I feel more comfortable with a thumbless grip, same goes for pushdowns and overhead cable extensions.

Great tips as always! I was having elbow pain around April last year. It became so painful that I can't even put pressure on it. Even putting it on the table hurts. Set me back 6 months. I found that stabilizing the scapula and externally rotating the shoulder helps for me. What are your thoughts Scott?

But when I go to the flat bench press, when I'm at the bottom of the repaid when it comes time to push the weight up, my shoulder just gets a nasty pain that hurts a lot and bothers me so much...... Best advice I have received "Push through your heels not your toes". That works even on the elliptical machine, or when squatting and dead lifting.

Man I've only gotta touch my elbow and I'm in pain, I haven't trained tris in over 18 months, working high rep low weight on all presses, warm up for a long time and layer up in the gym to keep it warm, stretch out forearms, bis and tris daily and the pain never goes :( also have extremely pointy elbows

ScottHermanFitness It's not really pain on elbow itself, it's more on the tendons with the inflammation and stuff. In fact, I haven't been doing proper upperbody for months as I can't grip dumbbell/etc without feeling sore and start hurting. Every week is leg day for the past 9 months -_-

Anyone.... i am having a very difficult time developing the long medial head of the triceps. I have tried numerous exercises where the movement is behind my head and pushing the weight upward. But even with this, the portion of the triceps running behind the deltoids is still flabby. Help!

    Hey Scott
I really like your videos a lot and they really help me, though i got a question about my leg workout. I am an ice hockey player from Belgium and i need explosive legs specially my quads and hams. I already do squat jumps and stuff but i thought maybe it would be nice for everybody if you would make a video of an explosive leg workout. It would really help me a lot and maybe other guys to.
Thanks for all the help already man!
    Greats Seppe

If you wanna really destroy your elbows, try behind the head triceps extensions with a straight bar loaded with heavy weight xD Results guaranteed.

I don't do these no more because of my age but you are correct my triceps blew up doing these . Back in the late 80s and 90s people would see me doing them this way in the gym and try to tell me I'm doing them incorrect that I needed to take the bar to my forehead I told them I know what works for me .
