once i started feeling some discomfort in my elbows, i started doing some warm ups and it completely cured that issue 100%. im now warming up whatever muscle i am working on that day from now on
Thanks for posting this Scott! I suffered an injury to my elbow a few months back and worked hard to recover my range of motion it's not perfect but good enough to not bother me to lift so I'll definitely add this in when warming the joint up before hand!
Warm up is important and so is soft tissue work using bands. I might add that elbow pain is not always about "elbows" but can also be due to "the chain" including wrist and shoulder impingement's or weakness/imbalances (especially shoulders). I'm also discovering that my mattress is killing my shoulders, lower back and hips. Since sleeping on the floor (lying on back using pillows), I'm noticing a tremedous difference in correcting many problems I've had for years and years in these same areas (shoulders, wrists and hips). It's a great idea for those who do heavy lifting and body building to investigate the benefits of sleeping on the floor for correcting such issues and maintaining proper alignment in these areas.
Nice tips! I have been experiencing elbow pains for some time and warm-up sets really helped me a lot. It's almost completely gone. I'll make sure to try your other tips too.
You hit it right on the head and your advice works, thanks. I thought I was going to suffer if I wanted to lift. Pains gone now and I learned the importance of stretching .
Awesome video, Scott. This one was especially helpful given my struggles I've had with golfer's elbow over the past year. Thanks for all you do for us!
Watching this in Dec of 2017, Scott looks to have gained about 35lbs of muscle or more since this video and is even more cut. Clearly shows that you can get the results you're looking for naturally if you're willing to put in the work. Great video bro! Thanks again!
Just in time for triceps! You da man Scott ..... great tips as usual. I usually have problems with my left elbow but have modified some of my workouts .... these tips will help can’t wait to try. Keep pushing!
Thanks +ScottHermanFitness! I have been having elbow issue for a while. I will sure to use your tips next time when i work out my tricep. i want to add another alternative to close grip bench press. I found that doing close grip bench press on ez-bar puts less pressure on my elbow since that bar is much more elbow friendly compare to olympic bar. Also it helps me isolate my tricep and puts less stress on my chest.
Wear elbow covers, NOT tight straps, and start with a couple of light warm up sets. Then if you do them, do Tricep push downs 1st using soft individual grips or a V bar, NOT straight bar.
scott the second variation of the sckull crusher is harder, your working against gravity and the full weight is on your elbow. the conventinal way to do it when you hit your skull is easier because getting closer to 180 or full look out is easier because gravaty is going to be in straight line with your arm. go watch jeff cavalier from athlean-x he has a video on that and also im an ingenieer and its simple angles and math.
Scott, when doing skull crushers like you demonstrated at 5:03, what effect would using a thumbless grip have on the exercise? I feel more comfortable with a thumbless grip, same goes for pushdowns and overhead cable extensions.
Thx so much, I have had a lot of elbow pain and all the weight monitors in the gym say is to stop doing it. Ha! I'm gonna keep your suggestions in mind. Thx!
Hi scott, I had keyhole surgery on my right elbow due to arthritis about 4 years ago. As a result I can only extend my right arm or lock it out at around 70%. could you tell me what would be the best exercise to get to 100% or as close as ? thanks.
Great tips as always! I was having elbow pain around April last year. It became so painful that I can't even put pressure on it. Even putting it on the table hurts. Set me back 6 months. I found that stabilizing the scapula and externally rotating the shoulder helps for me. What are your thoughts Scott?
can you do one on avoiding or treating shoulder pain! exercises like shoulder press, and especially lateral raises make my shoulders kinda pop no matter how slowly i do it or how light i go
Really informative video Scott, I've struggled with elbow pain for nearly every tricep exercise (except dips). You're right, starting with a low weight and gradually building it up is the only way to lift a moderate to heavy weight without much elbow pain for me.
Thanks collingwoodsuk , yeha most of us, including me, learn this lesson the hard way. Let's hope we can spread the word and save the elbows of our fellow Hermanites! #HTH #SHFAthlete
Hi scott does this triceps tips also work with medial elbow pain when doing any pressing movements because i have when doing pressing movements. And besides that are you or do you have any degree of physical therapist or kinesiology.
Does carbs necessary to build muscle Volume or protein alone are enough? i mean if i take a gainer mass with Cetogene Diet is it good to build mass muscle and to get shredded??? thanks

I forgot to mention, the bar is going behind my head when I do them ;) I really have to extra warm up before this exercise even though I'm having a few chest exercises before it...but lately I replaced skullcrusher with close grip bench press because I love how my triceps feel after doing it! :D
Thanks man its a great video. I've been suffering from elbow cracking from a while. It doesn't really hurt but its making me very uncomfortable when doing push ups or dips. Can you please help me out with this?
That's great !.. it's almost the first time that I heamebody insisting on the fact that the most important thing in bodybuilding is TO WARM UP before starting any exercices !..
Also have elbow snaps in my left arm. Golf elbow.. Sucks. Have got some kineso tape og and doing stretch and ice. Plus some pain relief creme. Are seeing a specialist atm. But i at only one week in the treatment fase. So i guess i have a bit of time before i can workout again..
I m guilty of doing that. I'm currently having tendinitis, receiving shots twice a year for the pain. I m going to follow this training in tricep days, thanx dude
Great. I just have a question. If I do a push workout, chest then triceps, after doing chest should I warm up for triceps? Or my triceps are alredy warmed up after doing push chest exercise? Thanks.
Hey Scott, I believe I injured my right shoulder a couple of months ago. I decreased my volume and training intensity so that I can recover. it's funny because I can workout my shoulders with no pain at all. But when I go to the flat bench press, when I'm at the bottom of the repaid when it comes time to push the weight up, my shoulder just gets a nasty pain that hurts a lot and bothers me so much...... Any tips or should I see a doctor? Thanks Scott!
I really can not tell, I would say it is my side delts. I don't flare my elbows too much and I record myself to see my form and it looks good just doesn't feel good futurealasd
Jose Ortega try retracting your scapula when bench pressing...i know its hard, but keep the shoulder blades together and down throughout the exercise. this is the top form for bench pressing, but u should drop the weight
Sounds like you have some built up scar tissue you need to work through. Happened to me before.. and it sucked, but you have to push through. This can help you too. How To: Shoulder Warm-Up: Increase Mobility & Injury Prevention!
Have tennis elbow right now. Don't know what specific exercise I did to cause it but I'm wondering if you can do a video on what exercises you should stay away from to not make the injury worse with tennis elbow.
ScottHermanFitness I'm talking what you should avoid overall such as bench, pull ups, lat pull downs, etc. What overall exercise will aggravate the injury more?
I like all of your videos, they are very informative. I've been going over some of your old videos from few years back, and you look so much better back then. You were fuller, and it seems like overall your physique was much better overall. Why? The only difference I noticed was that you now seem to do less drop sets than you used to. I'm not trying to be negative with my comments, I'm just wondering if you ever compared yourself to your old videos and thought there was a difference?
hi Scott thanks for the tips however i cant do dips i have a sharp pain in my sternum middle chest that last for a week at least . so i have been avoiding it. it has been like this for 3 years .
Hey Scott, thanks for the video! I combine my tricep workout with my chest workout so aren't my elbows allready warmed up when i'm finished my chest routine?
theres always that line of not warming up enough, or warming up too much and interfering with working sets..i used to do that with legs and it compromised my lifts.. so i do a quick warmup to get blood blood flowing then go
but Scott, say I'm in a Chest and Triceps session, isn't it too much to do 3-4 warmup sets for triceps exercises after I'm done hitting chest? I'm having quite serious elbow pain right now :(
Man I've only gotta touch my elbow and I'm in pain, I haven't trained tris in over 18 months, working high rep low weight on all presses, warm up for a long time and layer up in the gym to keep it warm, stretch out forearms, bis and tris daily and the pain never goes :( also have extremely pointy elbows
ScottHermanFitness It's not really pain on elbow itself, it's more on the tendons with the inflammation and stuff. In fact, I haven't been doing proper upperbody for months as I can't grip dumbbell/etc without feeling sore and start hurting. Every week is leg day for the past 9 months -_-

I don't do these no more because of my age but you are correct my triceps blew up doing these . Back in the late 80s and 90s people would see me doing them this way in the gym and try to tell me I'm doing them incorrect that I needed to take the bar to my forehead I told them I know what works for me .
Great advice Scott! Far too often people jump right into their heavy working sets before getting that elbow joint warm and loose.

Anyone.... i am having a very difficult time developing the long medial head of the triceps. I have tried numerous exercises where the movement is behind my head and pushing the weight upward. But even with this, the portion of the triceps running behind the deltoids is still flabby. Help!
What is your meal plan like? How old are you?

Hey Scott
I really like your videos a lot and they really help me, though i got a question about my leg workout. I am an ice hockey player from Belgium and i need explosive legs specially my quads and hams. I already do squat jumps and stuff but i thought maybe it would be nice for everybody if you would make a video of an explosive leg workout. It would really help me a lot and maybe other guys to.
Thanks for all the help already man!
Greats Seppe
Hey Seppe58 ! Thanks for the positive feedback!
Check out this video, it should help you with explosiveness! #HTH
Plyo Intensity: "EXPLODE UP!" Volume 1
If you wanna really destroy your elbows, try behind the head triceps extensions with a straight bar loaded with heavy weight xD Results guaranteed.
I don't do these no more because of my age but you are correct my triceps blew up doing these . Back in the late 80s and 90s people would see me doing them this way in the gym and try to tell me I'm doing them incorrect that I needed to take the bar to my forehead I told them I know what works for me .
