  • 한복에 패션을 더하다!,... 끊임없는 한복의 아름다운 변신
The traditional Korean costume known as hanbok is always evolving, and each generation seems to have its own version.
Back in the 60s,... before Western clothing became common, Koreans used to wear gaeryang, or modern, hanbok.
The current version updates the style with different fabrics and a slimmer silhouette.
This pop-up shop is one of many around Seoul featuring the latest style.
It carries everything from casual shirts to special occasion dresses, showing off the hanbok's many variations.
    (Standup)
"This is a hanbok designed to be worn as a cocktail dress. It has the elements of a traditional hanbok, but the patterns and lines are fancier and more contemporary, reflecting the latest fashion trends."
The traditional colors and trendy styles on display attract a steady stream of customers.
    (Korean)
"These hanbok look more comfortable and are easier to move around in than the traditional kind,... but they also embody Korean beauty and still have a traditional feel."
The designers say practicality and affordability are also a factor -- like these hanbok for young children.
    (Korean)
"Hanbok are not cheap,... and because babies grow fast, it can be a burden to parents. Our hanbok sleeves can be extended based on a child's growth."
    (Korean)
"The idea that this hanbok can be worn for a longer time is really nice. It also looks pretty cute."
Globally, the latest hanbok are already attracting attention on the runway, with several leading brands showcasing their interpretations at fashion shows in cities worldwide.
But the popularity of these more modern styles has also elicited a gentle reminder from hanbok traditionalists.
    (Korean)
"It's great that these new fashion hanbok are making hanbok more accessible to young people. But the real, traditional hanbok need to be preserved the way they are. The costume consists of several layers with small details... and all of the layers have to be worn for a perfect traditional hanbok look."
The traditional aspect is something that hanbok designers say is an important jumping off point for their creations.
    (Korean)
"Clothes must not remain in the past,.. but develop with each successive generation. They must also reflect the designer and his or her thoughts, but, of course, with an understanding of the original, traditional hanbok."

I hate how non-white people (except for Muslims) refer to their traditional clothing as a costume, as if non-white people are playing a game of dress up when wearing their traditional clothing, but being "normal" and serious when wearing western clothing. If clothes make the "man", as westerners say, then when non-white people wear western clothing who are they or who do they see themselves as? It's nice to know that some non-white fashion designers are making the step at bringing their traditional clothing back into fashion amongst their own people and even revitalizing it by creating styles that are relevant to today's times. I wish that all non-white people could have a similar renewal of their respective cultures and move away more from western culture and western ideology.

It's normal for the traditional clothing to be called a "costume", since usually there are a set number of pieces/details that have to be put together, in order to get correct costume look. I am from Europe and when I refer to the traditional clothing of my country, I almost always say "traditional costume"...

@@Sofi00 My point is, that when it concerns modern clothing, which is also western, it's not referred to as a costume. It's only non-white people who's traditional clothing is referred to as a costume and who don't have their own form of modern clothing. Even the word modern, in reference to society, is due to the Europeans on account of the progressive era, which heavily influenced all aspects of human life. Were it not for global European colonialism and the progressive era, what would non-European people wear today?

@@zaarkhananal7165 I think you also missed my point saying that It is not true that only "non-white" traditional clothing is is being called a costume. And also, all countries in Europe have their own traditional costumes that are worn much less frequently than, for example, East Asian ones. Therefore, of course modern day clothing has come from the "old world" but you can not assume that "non-white" people where the only ones that gave up their traditional dress to fit in with the rest of developed world.

@@Sofi00 Europeans gave up their traditions for the uniform modern western culture, non-white people gave or were robbed of their culture in favor of European modernism. The differences being one is an accelerated, or degraded depending on one's perspective, progression of a culture. The other is the annihilation of one culture in favor of another. Non-white people have sacrificed themselves in order to fit in to a western perspective. You pointing out that Europeans gave up their culture in favor of modern western culture is irrelevant because it's still all European. There is no "sameness" between non-white people's and white people's paradigms, otherwise the term white people (i.e. pure, preferred, perfect) would not exist. Non-white people have sold their soul in order to be accepted by Europeans, that was my original point.

hey I don't know your nationality...but here in India we don't refer them as " costumes" and are really proud of our culture...
