    Hola Señor Jordan. thank you, this video was very helpful! :)) please can you make a video explaining more about Spanish accents as I didn't really understand the part where you mentioned "dipthongs"

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  Рік тому +1

      dipthongs are quite simple.
      In Spanish there are strong vowels (a, e, o) and weak vowels (i, u).
      This means that when they are put next to each other, strong vowels are each an individual syllable.
      koala -> (in syllables) ko-a-la
      idea --> (in syllables) i-de-a
      weak vowels, on the other hand, don't create new syllables, they combine with the other vowels.
      cuidado -> cui-da-do
      ciudad ->ciu-dad
      tiene --> tie-ne
      empiezo --> em-pie-zo
      juego -> jue-go
      agua -> a-gua
      When they combine, that is called a dipthong. We can break that with an accent mark on the weak vowel:
      María --> Ma-rí-a
      podría --> po-drí-a
      continúa --> con-ti-nú-a
      Hope that helps!

    and if I ask you to make a decision, do I use tomar and not hacer, ejemplo (Señor Jordan, ¿cómo va usted a tomar su decisión?) o puedo usar hacer también.

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  7 місяців тому

      In Spanish, it's not "to make a decision" (like English) but "to take a decision". So it's always some form of "tomar una decisión".
      In your example:
      ¿Cómo va a tomar su decisión usted?
      hacer can't be used as that's nonsensical in Spanish.
      It would be like if a Spanish-speaking person asked you:
      How are you going to take your decision?
      It isn't the word used in the language.
      There are all sorts of expressions like this. Another interesting one is "tiene sentido" (it has sense) vs. "it makes sense".
      An important lesson to learn is that different languages do things differently. Sometimes things translate word for word but many other times they don't.
      Hope that helps!

    My students found this very helpful! Also, "Nada valgo sin tu amor' by Juanes is the only example that comes to mind for when "valgo" would be useful.

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  7 років тому

      Tienes toda la razón. I once heard it in an Argentinian film where an woman told her ex-boyfriend who didn't pay her enough attention, "yo me valgo".
      But yeah... it's rare! ;-)

    Hello señor Jordan, question why is hacer uses as ‘go’ ejemplo “vamos a hacer un viaje a Paris? and when is the personal ‘a’ used ejemplo Cuando hablo con Carla ella siempre quiere saber de ti o Cuando hablo con a Carla ella siempre quiere saber de ti. Gracias

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  7 місяців тому

      "yogo" or "goyo" because in the "yo" form, the ending is "go"
      yo hago - I do, make
      The personal a is used when a person is the object of the verb.
      Ex:
      Voy a mirar/ver a Carla.
      in your example, con is a preposition, so we won't add an 'a" after con, de, etc.
      Hope that helps!

    traéis/salís ect. just if you speak spanish in spain? what do i have to use in other countrys (eg. Mexico/columbia)? why is that?

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  8 років тому

      +Goalkeepers Site You use "ustedes" (form that ends in an "n") in Latin America. It's just the way the language evolved over time through colonization of the Americas. Might be something you could learn about in a graduate level linguistics course in Spanish. ;-)

    Hm question. You say OYE is the USTED form, however... Isnt OIGA the proper way to speak in the USTED form ? From what I ve learned in Mexico, you say OYE to your friends, and OIGA to an elder (usted)

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  9 років тому

      SuperHns There is a difference between describing reality (indicative tense) and commanding (imperative).
      If I ask someone "do you hear that?" I am asking about what's going on. (indicative)
      ¿oyes? - do you hear?
      ¿usted oye eso? - do you hear that?
      If I tell someone "listen!", then I am commanding them (imperative)
      ¡oye! - listen! (tú command)
      *¡Oiga! - listen (formal command)
      I hope that clarifies it!
      *this video comes in handy because when you do usted commands and some other things (present subjunctive) later, it helps to know what the present tense YO form is because you'll notice "oiga" is a lot like "oigo" only with an "a" on the end.

    I used to sell cars on the car market here in Mexico and sometimes I would ask them Cuanto Vale, when it was about a car. Or they would ask me the same. So yeah it is used but not as much xD

    • @SeñorJordan
      @SeñorJordan  9 років тому

      SuperHns Yep! But "valgo" isn't too useful since it's not often people will tell you what they're worth. ;-)

    for the verb poner in the example, why is it poner and not in the tú form pones?

    • @SeñorJordan

      Because "You need TO set the table". The second verb is left in the "to" form (infinitive". Just like it English we don't say, "You need you set!"
