I'd say a flip phone that's restricted to only calling me and my future wife at 10. A smartphone when they are in high school. Something stupid about this video though: "do you check their history?" I learned to clear my history on the computer by3rd grade. So I would assume every other kid out there knows how to do it. (I'm 19 now)
That’s not necessarily true. If you’re in elementary school & you go somewhere without any adults, you and your parents need to be able to communicate (5th & 6th grade; some elementary schools go up to 6th).

Then I got my current phone a few months before I turned 13. That phone was the iPhone 7. I am on my parents family plan with unlimited talk & text as well as unlimited data. I am not trying to brag at all btw. But, I just wanted to share when I got mine. My parents made me show that I could be responsible with a phone. (Meaning I have never cracked a screen, never gotten it in water, never broken it, e.c.t. I think that that is a good way to make your choice of when.

Then o got my second iPad (this time it was an iPad mini) when I was 5. I got my first (new phone since the first old one my twin sister ruined by accidentally dropping it in the toilet). When I was a kid I used to play with toys, girls, do sports, and hang outside. Nowadays you have the internet, iphones, ipads, video consoles and all that digital stuff. I mean, I know the times are changing but too much technology still can't replace human emotions! And please kids know your limits! The internet and digital stuff has it's dangers also (e-bullying, addictions, becoming anti-social), so be responsible and know where to go, what to say and do! And get a religious education that helps you to get some morals and put worth in spiritual things not only material!

Using the argument "I didn't have it when i grew up and i was fine" can't really apply. 1919 was the year that over 50% of Americans had toilets instead of outhouses. A baby born in 1908, statistically, didn't have a toilet until they were 11. If they have a kid in 1940, would they deny their kid of running water and a toilet because they did fine without? Of course not! I view cell phone the same way. Media consumption has shifted mediums, and now having at least a tablet or iPod touch, maybe even a chromebook, helps kids get used the the media-centric world. Depriving kids of that opportunity until they are a teen just doesn't make sense.

It differs for every child. Some are mature, and some are very childish. But as a minimum, I would say 10 for a cell/smartphone. That means a smartphone with a cell plan. For a smartphone phone with no cell plan, I would say 6. For a cellphone, don't even bother. If it can't play Pokémon GO, it sucks. Kids will hate you. For internet usage unsupervised I would choose 0. Kids are not stupid.

Ok so I'm 12 and I've brought my phone to school and I know for a FACT that if I were to get on it in class and get it taken away, I will never get it back. I know what and what not to get on. So really, I think the problem is parents who don't care about what the kids do. My mom and dad pay attention to what I look at on my phone. So parents just need to raise their children with responsibility.
I didn't get my first phone until I was 18, and before that I had to borrow one of my parent's phones whenever I needed one. I wasn't ready for my own until then, and there was no reason for me to have one since I wasn't in too many situations where I would need one. I got along just fine. But today, things are different because the world is much more digital. So, it's hard to say which age is appropriate for a phone. I guess it depends on how mature the kid in question is. As for the internet use, parents should supervise young kids and teens and go by the age limits on the websites.
I'm 12. Getting a phone when I'm 13, literally everyone in my school has a phone. 7th or 8th grade makes sense to have a phone, but I'm unsure about the 6th grade. It feels weird being one of the only grateful kids there, and with parents that doesn't spoil me.

I once forgot my homework at school, so when I got to school I got in trouble for not having my homework. While, my friends would have ask each other for a picture of the homework and would have their homework turned in...so please give your child a phone at 11 and up (before they become depressed too).

My sister got in serious trouble with her cell phone and my mother busted her butt when she was 13 and as a matter of fact, a guy got thrown in jail for making contact with a minor which was her. It absolutely pissed me off. Another thing that pisses me off is these parents don't take their cell phones from them at night when they have school the next day. BE A PARENT! Stop being your child's friend! If you're gonna be a friend to your child, you should go to jail. My mom's ex boyfriend would act immature and would not spank his son. He always acted as a friend instead of a parent. 1 day, his son got in trouble at school because he was playing with his toy penguins in class instead of doing his school work so she took them away from him and he says to her, You better give them back or else my dad is coming up here and he's gonna be mad. He came to the school and went off on her by using the f-word at her. I'm so glad he is not a part of my life anymore. He and my mom broke up in May of 2017.

When I was a kid I used to play with toys, girls, do sports, and hang outside. Nowadays you have the internet, iphones, ipads, video consoles and all that digital stuff. I mean, I know the times are changing but too much technology still can't replace human emotions! And please kids know your limits! The internet and digital stuff has it's dangers also (e-bullying, addictions, becoming anti-social), so be responsible and know where to go, what to say and do! And get a religious education that helps you to get some morals and put worth in spiritual things not only material!

Using the argument "I didn't have it when i grew up and i was fine" can't really apply. 1919 was the year that over 50% of Americans had toilets instead of outhouses. A baby born in 1908, statistically, didn't have a toilet until they were 11. If they have a kid in 1940, would they deny their kid of running water and a toilet because they did fine without? Of course not! I view cell phone the same way. Media consumption has shifted mediums, and now having at least a tablet or iPod touch, maybe even a chromebook, helps kids get used the the media-centric world. Depriving kids of that opportunity until they are a teen just doesn't make sense.

It differs for every child. Some are mature, and some are very childish. But as a minimum, I would say 10 for a cell/smartphone. That means a smartphone with a cell plan. For a smartphone phone with no cell plan, I would say 6. For a cellphone, don't even bother. If it can't play Pokémon GO, it sucks. Kids will hate you. For internet usage unsupervised I would choose 0. Kids are not stupid.

Ok so I'm 12 and I've brought my phone to school and I know for a FACT that if I were to get on it in class and get it taken away, I will never get it back. I know what and what not to get on. So really, I think the problem is parents who don't care about what the kids do. My mom and dad pay attention to what I look at on my phone. So parents just need to raise their children with responsibility.
I didn't get my first phone until I was 18, and before that I had to borrow one of my parent's phones whenever I needed one. I wasn't ready for my own until then, and there was no reason for me to have one since I wasn't in too many situations where I would need one. I got along just fine. But today, things are different because the world is much more digital. So, it's hard to say which age is appropriate for a phone. I guess it depends on how mature the kid in question is. As for the internet use, parents should supervise young kids and teens and go by the age limits on the websites.

I once forgot my homework at school, so when I got to school I got in trouble for not having my homework. While, my friends would have ask each other for a picture of the homework and would have their homework turned in...so please give your child a phone at 11 and up (before they become depressed too).

My sister got in serious trouble with her cell phone and my mother busted her butt when she was 13 and as a matter of fact, a guy got thrown in jail for making contact with a minor which was her. Stop being your child's friend! If you're gonna be a friend to your child, you should go to jail. My mom's ex boyfriend would act immature and would not spank his son. He always acted as a friend instead of a parent. 1 day, his son got in trouble at school because he was playing with his toy penguins in class instead of doing his school work so she took them away from him and he says to her, You better give them back or else my dad is coming up here and he's gonna be mad. He came to the school and went off on her by using the f-word at her. I'm so glad he is not a part of my life anymore. He and my mom broke up in May of 2017.
