    I said a good while back that I would do a review on all the Axiom models and it is finally here. At lease the first video is. I will be doing 2 videos to cover the range in detail. I’m not sure how far away the follow up video will be, work is going to be crazy until Christmas.
    This first video is only going to cover the bottom end of the Axiom range. There are 3 of these, the 7” Axiom 7, the 9” Axiom 9 and 12.1” Axiom 12 models
    These three models are further divided into sub-models:
    No suffix denotes the base model
    DV a model with DownVision sonar capabilities
    RV a model with RealVision sonar capabilities
    First of all, I will list all of the common features to get them out of the way so we can focus on the differences which are the things you will most likely make your choice on.
    Their mounting options, waterproof rating, temperature ratings, voltage ratings and display brightness rating are all the identical.
    Sonar performance is listed as identical across all models.
    CHIRP Sonar = 274m (900 feet)
    DownVision™ = 183m (600 feet)
    SideVision™ = 91m (300 feet)
    RealVision™ 3D = 91m (300 feet)
    All models have 4Gb of memory built in and can store the same number of waypoints/tracks./routes.
    All models have an SD card slot in the rear of the unit which will take an SD card of up to 2Tb if formatted with NTFS or FAT32.
    Map cards are sold separately (but may be bundled) and all units can take the same range of maps. I prefer the Navionics maps but the C-MAP 4D maps are also excellent. Picking the map card that is best for you is a whole ‘nuther subject which I might cover in a later video, but I will mention one thing now. If you choose Navionics or C-MAP charts you also get tides and currents.
    They all come with a built-in GNSS Receiver and they all can receive data from an external RS-150 72 channel GPS/GLONASS receiver for enhanced performance.
    Display resolution is 800 x 480 for the two smaller units but increases to 1280 x 800 for the 12” display.
    They all have good viewing angles but while the 7” and 9” units are identical, the 12” display has slightly better figures.
    All of the RV models come with built-in RealVision™ 3D with a 600W transducer.
    The Axiom 7 DV model has built in DownVision with a 600W transducer but no RealVision.
    The DV model has a 9-pin connector for the DownVision transducer while the RV models have a 25-pin connector for the RealVision transducer.
    All will accept a range of transducers such as the CP100, CP200, CP370, CP470 and CP570 professional unit via a RayNet connection.
    Power consumption varies between all models:
    Axiom 7: Chartplotter - 7.34 Watts
    DV - 10.02 Watts
    RV - 9.84 Watts
    Axiom 9: Chartplotter - 8.95 Watts
    RV - 11.98 Watts
    Axiom 12: Chartplotter - 15.48 Watts
    RV - 18.96 Watts
    What is missing from the base model Axioms that made me pick the Pro for my boat?
    I’ll go through the list, not necessarily in order of importance;
    1. The base units don’t have any keys, they are purely touch screen. If you want keys, then you need to buy an accessory keypad. Trust me on this, if you get the base unit, buy the keypad. There have been several occasions when I have needed to turn off the touch screen and operate only on the keys when there was water dripping onto the screen. I believe this has been improved in the latest plus models.
    2. The Pro version has more connections as standard. If you run out of connections on the base unit you need to buy splitters which adds to the cost. For the installation I had planned I needed the connections offered by the Pro.
    3. The Pro RVX comes with 1KW chirp sonar capability which offers better performance than the 600W sonar in the base model. The base models can be upgraded, but this is again, an additional cost.
    4. The SD cards are at the back of the unit making them difficult to get to and I had in mind that I would need to access them regularly, which I do. The SD cards are in the front on the Pro units.
    Now don’t get me wrong, if all you need is the base model then that is what you should buy. I wanted features that the Pro offered out of the box and I would have had to buy accessories to add to the base model, making it much the same price as the Pro and not offering as much convenience for my purposes.

    Thank you for your review. Watching from Florida, USA. I currently have an old Raymarine C120 I’m looking to replace. I appreciate your insights on the different models currently available.

      Glad it was helpful! An addendum that Raymarine just announced for the next version of Lighthouse. The thing that I hated most about it was that the autopilot would not turn until you pressed a button to authorise it. That was a boardroom inspired limitation that is being removed in the next release.

    Very thorough review. Sounders have come a long long way since my old lowrance elite 5.

      They sure have. My first sounder didn't even have a screen, just a paper roll and a stylus the drew on it. Technology certainly has come a long way.

    So how do you know how big the fish are that you are scanning on the 3D imaging? The feedback seems to just come back as a group of dots. How would you know whether those dots are a school of bluegills or a school of bass?

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  2 роки тому

      The dots can be colour coded on the strength of the returned signal but I find it easier to interpret if I just run 2D CHIRP and if they are off to the side too far, make a pass back over them. Enotgh practise and I might trust the colour of the dots more.

      @@weFishAU Hmmm okay. I thought the dots were already color coded based on how high in the water column they were at. So you're saying that you can set it up so that a bigger fish will return a different color?

      Sorry for the late reply, UA-cam hid a lot of messages until today.
      Yes, somewhere in the settings menu for the 3D you can set the colour to be based on the intensity of the return.

    I really appreciated the information but something is seriously wrong with the sound on this video.

    What would your suggestion be for a budget fish finder, chart plotter. I'm more concerned with good chart plotting and route navigation around the lower bay.
    Iv got an old hummingbird system in my boat that was probably new when the boat was built, 2006. Iv been using navionics on a table to do navigation atm around the bay

      Bit hard to answer without a price range so I will give some general information based on my experience. I'm not familiar with the model of Humminbird you have but from what I know of them if you can use one well then you need not be afraid of getting anything (say a Furuno) that has a bit of a learning curve for the user interface.
      I really like Furuno units but they are at the upper end of the price range and arguably have the largest learning curve to use well. Raymarine and Humminbird both have some great features and a broad price range in the units they offer. Garmin is generally the easiest to use and the ones I have owned do a good job.
      I haven't personally used Simrad or Lowrance but I have heard positive things about them from people who have.
      Lots of people will bad mouth a particular brand but my experience is that most of the time they do that because they haven't taken the time to learn to use it properly.
      Boat shows are a great place to buy one but they have nearly all been cancelled this year. If you live near some of the larger chandleries where they have them set up and running so you can play with the interface that would be a good starting point to see what you like. Just double check what the salesmen say, I have encountered the odd one that gets a little over enthusiastic about praising the unit they are trying to sell.

    No one can tell me what these are like in deep water?? Anyone?? I fish from 30-100 meters

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  3 роки тому +1

      I can see fish at 100 metres on the 2D (zoomed in on the bottom). Don't know how much deeper it will work. I haven't tried down vision or 3D, sticking with what I know and can interpret at that depth.

      @@weFishAU thanx for that🙂. How is it besides that. You happy with it ??

    • @weFishAU
      @weFishAU  3 роки тому

      For the most part, yes. I haven't spent much time playing with the 3D but 2D, downvision and sidevision are all good. It works well with the Navionics chart. Very unhappy with their idea of route following for the autopilot. Not terribly impressed with the Yamaha engine interface but I wouldn't say it is bad, just unimpressive.
      Apart from the autopilot I would recommend it.
      Wanting to get a 1kw chirp transducer for really deep work but haven't got there yet.
