Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. I love Ling Buyi! He defended Niao Niao after those hurtful comments by her mom by making Niao Niao the best one out of all the women coveting after him. With his words he rejected all those mean girls and put everyone in their place! Who wouldn’t want a man like him?!

I find it ironic that these parents couldn't remember just a little bit ago the emperor had presented CSS with an edict praising her for her efforts and virtues in Hua County and also assisting in delaying the bandits in the mountains. Then up at Mount T instead of punishing the young people for their behavior, he pulls Master Cheng out of the lineup and changes attitude when he hears Ling Buyi has saved CSS again to find out what happened. The emperor was persuaded he may have come on too strong and scared CSS at Mount T as she remained mostly silent. Then it's quite obvious or at least it should be to the parents that the Emperor and Empress clearly invited them to the palace because they were wanting to get to know CSS. She was the one they brought up for a closer look and questions. No wonder the emperor got as angry as he did and astonished that they were not only putting her down but also rejecting the emperor's offer of engagement to Ling Buyi in public. The parents still have the audacity to keep criticizing her, especially the mother. CSS didn't criticize and humiliate them in return. She stood up for them and saved the family's lives, income and social standing. Which to me spoke volumes into CSS character.
I watched this scene three times to make sure that I was seeing correctly, the general sees her for who she truly is, and still loves her for who she is. You go General.
I think the Empress and Niao Niao will have a better relationship than her actual mother. Love how the General told her not to cut him off. That should have told her something about her future son in law . He will defend Niao Niao till the end of time 😃
I kind of love the Emperor and Empress' reaction to her agreeing with her mothers denigrating words. You could clearly see they were upset by her saying terrible untrue words about herself; the Empress genuinely looks like she wants to hug her and comfort her. I paused it when it was focused on her and it looks like she's saying "Oh sweetheart, you know that's not true" in her head and it's so lovely that these two already seem to care for her more than her actual parents seem to. They act as if her not having the same etiquete and having her own mind is a deficit, but for those in power who are surrounded by those painted serpents, she is a welcome breath of fresh air.
And yes, we do love a ML who stands up for his love/fiance instead of claiming indifference and letting her be slandered when they're really ;in love' with the FL and pretend otherwise to 'protect her' from those who would use her as a weapon against him. It's a horrible writing trope that needs to be snuffed out in favour of well written ML like the general.
w8@R Emm - PREACH! Holy God of Chocolate I wanted to strangle that 'mother' AND her weak husband. I agree with all you've said, but ESPECIALLY your last point. I am SO done with that trope in these dramas.
Case in point, that drove me particularly insane, Ye Hua being cold to SuSu in Eternal Love....then wondering why she killed herself. Despite knowing all she suffred because he ignored her, letting others think they could do what they wanted. Especially after HE took her EYES and then abandoned her AGAIN. I think I actually invented new curse words to yell I was so mad. I really wanted a diffrent ending for her when she was 'reborn' (Mo Yuan was much more like General Ling). Dong Hua wasn't much better either Xiao Bai.
So Ling BiYu is really a breath of fresh air, especially when he gets revenge. As is a king, queen and royal consort who all get on, work together and support each other in doing what is best for the country. This drama is just excellent.on every front. I LOVE it.
Ps. Just to add I noticed your name, my daughter is ARMY so I know all about BTS, just wondered if you were too and its a play on Namjoon's name? I know more than I ever thought possible about that group these days! However, they do make good music.😊

Couldn’t agree with you more. Although a drama needs conflict, I’m so done with any kind of “relational” abuse being confused with passionate romance.
What I like about this drama is that The General, Her Mom, and other people and situations are tough Forces to deal with but she deal with them anyway while holding her own ground. I think it’s good that she says “if you don’t betray me, I will promise you this or that” or ‘I will not give up my personality for your love’.
Drama ML that just take and take and take with as price a marriage are annoying as f…..
I love how he stood up for her in front of her "mother". He see's her for who she is, not what everyone expects her to be.
This just shows you that living up to everyone else's expectations doesn't matter, in the end being yourself is the only thing that matters.
I love them. I'm glad he knows how much she appreciates everything he's done for her. He needed to hear her words....and she needed to witness him praising her. The best part is when he told her mother to "shut up" this woman has caused enough problems...she nearly got her entire family punished for defying a royal decree. General Ling is going to treat her with the utmost sincerity...he's going to love her with his whole heart. Niao Niao just hit the jackpot. She has the best man by her side.
The delusional princess fainting is hilarious. She lost her little mind knowing that Ling Buyi gave his heart to Niao Niao. I'm so glad that she had a front row seat to witness his marriage proposal. It's the best revenge ever
Niao Niao's mother is nerve wracking...her actions set all of this in motion when she openly defies the Emperor's decree by belittling her daughter in front of the entire royal family. She didn't care how her actions at that moment would impact Niao Niao's future. She effectively ruined any future marriage prospects for her daughter by calling her worthless...and now she wants to blame her for saving the entire family. Niao Niao can never win in her mother's eyes. I can't stand this woman.
This child is worthy of admiration. She selflessly tries to pull her family out of the abyss, consciously sacrificing herself. After everything her parents had said, and she confirmed, the only possibility for her to continue her life was that small house in the village where she was kept before her parents arrived. She even gives the general the opportunity to save face and withdraw his proposal. I think at this moment, the emperor understands why his favorite loves this girl so much. She really is the only one worthy of being with him. Poor Niao Niao doesn't even understand that what she's doing now only commands more respect, Ling Buyi won't give up on her. He took a chance and won this round, Shaoshan agreed.
@@Irynash11 I agree. Her mother warned her about causing a scene in front of the royal family. She never properly prepared her or trained her in social etiquette...yet she was the one that caused the problem and nearly got her entire family punished. If Niao Niao hadn't stepped in and smooth things over the Cheng family would've suffered for her parents' blatant disrespect when they refused the Imperial decree. Instead of thanking her daughter she tried to blame her for what happened. She didn't even consider Niao Niao future prospects when she belittled her daughter in front of the royal family....even the Emperor/Empress felt sorry for her. Niao Niao was a class act the way she handled the situation..and saved her parents. You're right the Emperor was impressed by her... and he finally understood why Ling Buyi loved her. Niao Niao is the only woman worthy enough to stand by his side. She's everything he needs and more. They complete each other. Niao Niao finally has someone in her corner that's willing to fight for her. She's one lucky lady.

@@luceafarul579 no she’s not a brat, you forgot her background, she’s relayed on herself for 15 years, she’s never had anybody else, she even tells LBY “I don’t know how to serve you, I don’t know how to love you, being your fiancée is really hard” she doesn’t understand his world yet.

For me, this is the moment where the empress and emperor became CSS's real parents. They never let her down once, but always push her to be better and defend her even against herself

One of my favourite cdrama scenes ever, the tone and delivery of his response when she asks if he still wants to marry someone like her after listing the awful things her mom said, the way she's more soft spoken than we've ever really seen her in public when she's protecting her parents by saying their criticisms are the truth. The facial expressions on every actor through the entire scene. Everything.
LBY love confession how many lives should i live to ever hear anything like that my god this is insane, for another human to love this deeply to yearn this hardly ahhh AHHHHH *faints*
Shao Shang didn’t just say: “I’m willing to marry General Ling” what she actually said was:
“just this once, I am willing to (over)reach for General Ling.”
Basically, she’s saying: I know I am not worthy of him, but just this once I’m willing to do this imprudent thing and surrender to my desire for him.

The fact that so many comments talk about what they’re seeing in different characters speaks to how terrific all the actors and actresses and the director, etc. did their jobs.
It’s amazing how viewers could see the subtle expressions on their faces in different scenes.
It’s just an amazing masterpiece that allowed each character to shine in their own way.
