    My grown daughter and I use a lot of grated cheesed in our homes. We always buy the really big blocks of cheese and hand grating really hurts.
    So I started looking for used Salad Shooters. I found a new one at a thrift store for $5.00. In less than 5 minutes we can have 2 large blocks grated.

      Good find at the thrift store! When I need to grate a very large amount of cheese I use my Cuisine Art food processor with the 'grating blade' attached. For small amounts I use various small hand graters. Now I just need to buy a box grater.

      I use my food processor to grate cheese too. I was doing it by hand and I hated it. It took so long to get it done. I’ve freeze dried some cheese and ground it to a powder in the food processor but I like to keep some shredded and in the freezer too.

      I got my salad shooter 20 years ago as a wedding gift and I still use it mainly for cheese grating!! Love it!

    I'd assume that this is less expensive than the cheese powder sold online. Looks easy to do. I'll keep my eyes out for a cheese sale. BTW, the colors in that shirt are wonderful on you. Thanks for all you do, you make an impact.

      Depending on the cheese used and the energy source, it certainly would be but one of the best things about it is that it is near impossible to find a store bought cheese powder without added ingredients (no matter what brand) that are not good for ones health.

    I can't wait to try this! I appreciate all your hard work showing us how to dehydrate things people think can only be freeze dried. Today my 90-year-old mom came home with 48 eggs, and I have 18 more for grocery pickup this afternoon. (I already ordered those before my mom came home with all the eggs.) She saw me dehydrate eggs previously, and said she knew I could "do something" with them, so she grabbed them when she saw them at a good price. Within 5 minutes after she got home, I had my dehydrators out and got the eggs in there right away. So easy! Maybe I need to tell her to watch out for cheese at a good price. :)

    😂 when you mentioned water in town it reminded me of what happened when I was in my 20s.
    I was in the middle of taking a shower, had shampoo in my hair and suddenly the water flow stopped.
    I yelled to my husband to find out what happened.
    Come to find out they were working on the water main in front of our house and neglected to tell the affected homeowners about it.
    My options were limited as to how to get the soap off.
    I had my husband bring me a small pitcher and he dipped the water out of the tanks on the toilets in both bathrooms then I rinsed my hair and body.
    Before anyone says ewwww, the water in the holding tank on the back of toilets is clean.
    My tanks were kept quite clean because I didn't want the minerals building up in them.

    Thank you for all the dehydrated videos using a dehydrator! I always wanted the really expensive one, but after watching you I realized I really don't need one. Your chicken idea of dehydrating cooked chicken is fabulous!

    Oneof the most popular children's dishes in my family is cheap box macaroni and cheese. There is tons of the stuff sold every year and nobody fussed that it's made with powdered cheese. It's so easy to make your own. That being said, my favorite mac and cheese is made with a white sauce with cheese melted into it, topped with buttered bread crumbs and browned in the oven.

    Thank you Heidi, I do not think I will ever be able to afford a freeze dryer it is low on my priority list, so that being said I love the idea of dehydrating cheese!!!!!

    Speaking of tomatoes. I grew two Early Girl plants and two Red Brandywine under the eaves on the south side of our home. The Early Girl plants produced long before the Red Brandywine. The RBs were great, too. I fermented six quarts from them, but they stopped producing abruptly mid-August. Meanwhile the Early Girl kept right on producing. I finally picked the last of the green tomatoes near the end of October. As they begin ripening in the basement, I bring them upstairs to put in my kitchen window. They're still ripening in my kitchen window! They're the best tomatoes I ever grew, very little spoilage, and an "endless" growing season! Hubby eats several of them daily, and he can barely keep up.
    I also bought a 12 pint flat of grape tomatoes. I made 6 quarts of fermented tomatoes with basil and garlic. Yum! We had a good year!

    My household likes tuna melts. I bet this would work for those too! And in a crisis, some kind of cheese is better than no cheese 🤷‍♀ Thanks for the tip on using sharp cheddar. Giving it a try this week! What you've put out for uses of a dehydrator (in place of the more pricey, not always reliable, freeze dryer) has been super helpful & encouraging!!

    I like to dehydrate GV Fiesta Blend shredded reduced fat cheese. It doesn't release any oil during drying. Then I can some as dried shreds, and powder the rest. It makes a great powder. I use that on diy kettle potato chips. 4 Tbl cheese powder and 1 tsp each of salt, sugar and jalapeño powders makes 1 gal of great tasting chips.

    I think I'll try my hand at dehydrating some cheese over the winter now that you've brought it to my attention! It's good to have as many various shelf stable options as possible in order to be prepared. I bet this would work well in my favorite Cauliflower-white cheddar cheese soup!

    My mom always raised a lot of tomatoes and at the end of the season just before it frosted she would pick all her green tomatoes and put them in boxes in layers with news paper between them and put them in the closet and over the winter she would go through them every week or so and pick out the ripe ones and we had fresh tomatoes up to Christmas

    Got my crockpot full of ripened (formerly green) tomatoes right now, on the way to becoming some tomato sauce for the freezer. Almost all of the green tomatoes ripened on the counter but it took a few weeks! I froze them as they ripened. Worked great!🐓

    Thank you for this video, Heidi. I really appreciate that you do the experimenting for us and present the pros and the cons of each process. It's very helpful for those that can't afford to do the experimenting themselves and risk losing the product if the experiment fails. I do have a question about dehydrating cheese. You mention using pre-frozen cheese before crumbling. Are you crumbling still-frozen cheese, or are you thawing the cheese before crumbling? Our stores have saved us more than once thru the years. Several years ago, our area was without electricity for over 2 weeks, and more recently, I was off work for 3-1/2 months due to an injury. Because of our mind for preparedness, we have fared just fine through more than these. Appreciate your heart for teaching and helping us so much❣️🥰💞🥰

      Good question. The cheese is already thawed before I even cut it or crumble it. It would be near impossible to cut it if it was still frozen.

    I am so new to all of this. This should be taught in schools, churches and community centers. What about using my sun oven as a dehydrator?

      As long as it does not get too warm it should work, you just do not want the cheese to melt all over the place either

    I did it on paper towel and it was oily from corner to corner. I opened my dehydrator a couple of times to pat the oily surface. Next time I'll use cotton instead of paper towel. I grated mine and when it was crispy I just put it in a jar and vacumed it.

    I grew the black nebula carrot this year, along with many other varieties. I found the sweeter and crisper than my other varieties. They did not turn my soup purple, thank goodness.

    Thank you so much for these videos. I think I'll invest in a 2nd dehydrater. I don't have the money or the room for a freeze dryer nor do I currently produce enough of my own food to justify a purchase like that. Still working on producing more. Storage space is also a concern so dehydrating it is for me.

    Thank you for your video. The freezing was a great idea for crumbling the cheese. I watched another video on dehydrating cheese and she rehydrated again after she’d ground up the cheese and then it was able to grind it even more. She’d started with store bought shredded cheese so maybe the cheese wasn’t as pure. I’m looking forward to trying to dehydrate some cheese. Thanks again.

    I’ve learned so much from your channel! However, you have the ability to talk faster than I can listen 🤗 shared some videos with my daughter who says you are very chatty! I grew lemon jalapeños last year and got two 🙄 Saved the seed and tried again this year. LOTS! It was a good pepper year here in Upstate NY! Didn’t plant them till mid-June and put them in very densely as I started to many. Never have had a harvest so prolific! Doing the same next year 😉

      NOTE: I try to pack a lot of information into my videos and also try not to drag them out so while it may seem I am talking fast, I spend hours cutting out long pauses and mistakes or even taking out things I think no one will be interested in or have no value to keep the videos from being too long because there will always be people that complain one way or the other so I try to find a balance. Wish I could please all 164,000 people all the time but this is impossible.

    One of my best investments has been a $5.00 mini food processor. The Dollar Store always puts this out for Black Friday and Christmas. I have had this for over 20 years and use it regularly.

    I can see dried and powdered cheese would be good to sprinkle on eggs.

      Yep, I will be doing more. I have been sprinkling it on other things like some cooked squash, and that was pretty good. Anxious to get the sharp cheddar in for more experimentation with that

    I'm so happy you made this video. In Canada (or BC at least) you can't buy powdered cheese anymore (or "shaker" cheese) as used for making mac n cheese without buying the box kits (which I despise). I've made mac n cheese with a fresh-made cheese sauce and although hubby and I think it's good, my kids wouldn't touch it. If they see me making it with the powder though . . . I'm excited to try!

    I have to make the cloth liners for my American Harvest dehydrator. I'll be getting the cheese from my freezer and dehydrating to make it shelf stable for a little while. Thank you for sharing your experiment, Heidi.

      @minihomesteadcooking it was the preshredded with the coating they put on. It turned out terrible, and I threw it all away. There was an overwhelming flavor of the potatoe starch coating. If you used real block cheese and shredded it yourself, I dare say it would turn out better. It's worth trying.

    I use paper towels cut to fit the trays, then change the paper half way through. I sprinkle it on hot burgers for cheese burgers.

      Yes, paper towels are one way, I like the cloth because I can wash and reuse and lessen my dependency on a paper product that may not be there for me and also it saves money. So just some thoughts to consider there. Simply wash by hand in hot water and dish soap and hang dry

    Wonderful experiment! I feel the cheese would be too lumpy and grainy for me. I'm going to try it though! I love how you've changed my outlook on life. It's one big experiment. Nothing is certain. You take what you have and you make it work. Thank you for the wonderful life lesson that I needed. I'm trying to get my Hubz to start thinking this way also.     Great information! We have a well, but looking to put in some rainwater collectors. I've been dehydrating a lot of vegetables and homemade pasta & making my own dehydrated soup blends. I still plan to can next seasons harvest, but this gives me more options. Thanks again!! Many Blessings!!

    I infuse calendula in extra Virginia olive oil. Then I add it to various ointments for wounds. I've had great success with my dairy cows teat injuries. Also there was a study several years ago that was on women who had c-sections. The study concluded that it healed the the incisions without scarring.

      yep, calendula is one of the several healing herbs that gets used in my skin cream and also in my healing salve. Other herbs include marshmallow, plantain, dandelion, yarrow, comfrey, and more

    I might have to try that dehydrated cheese! We have our own well but I have been washing out containers like milk containers and saving gallons of water and I’m all stocked up with rice and beans and miscellaneous for the winter.     Love the dehydrated cheese tip, thank you. For your green peppers, I have a tip. Cut the branch it (they) is growing on, keeping the fruit attached, and hang it in a temp controlled area until ripe. I had dozens of various hot peppers that hadn’t ripened by first frost this year. So I brought them them in and hung them while attached to their branches. Worked great over 3~14 days depending on the pepper. Only a few rotted and on inspection it turned out they were ones that had tiny slugs burrowed in.

    I think sharp cheddar to make cheese straws would be great, thank You, Heidi My Mom put them in one layer in a grocery bag and fold the bag done and put in a closet that you don't open often, once a week check on them.

      Yep, I did it that way too but found it best to keep them out where I can see them and remember them daily as some will ripen between one day and the next. Less likely to end up with a rotten tomato and they ripen just as quickly out where they can be seen

    Thank you for breaking things down to make them seem more approachable. I plan to dehydrate som cheddar cheese soon. I assume soft cheese may not work but would any firm cheese work? (Mozzarella, Monterey Jack, etc.)

      I am sure you can dry those cheeses, though I have not done it yet.

      I think it may have been Joybilee Farm who did an article on dehydrating feta cheese who also mentioned spreading cottage cheese, ricotta or cream cheese thinly on a fruit rollup sheet to dehydrate

    Not sure if it speeds up ripening, but I put Green Tomatoes in paper bags, they're ripe in a week or 2.

      No, it does not speed it up anymore than just keeping out where you can see it on a daily basis and not worry about forgetting them

    Yes I have been doing a lot of dehydrating and of course you must have water to rehydrate so yes this is something I have been doing you read my mind lol 😃 I found five gallon containes for 6 each so I now have 25 more gallons.

    Awesome video! I've had a bunch of cheese pile up in my freezer since I get a pound a week with our CSA (local, artisan cheese, it's fantastic, and lots of varieties); we get more than we can eat each week, so I put it in the freezer.....I don't want to freeze dry it since almost all of it is whole milk cheese, so dehydrating it is a great option! Thanks!

    Habaneros to me have almost a fruity flavor. I made salsa with habanero peppers one year. My hands didn’t like it but it didn’t burn my mouth at all.

    I am growing those Habaneros this year. Over here they are called Sweet Habanero. I am hoping to ferment them - I adore fermented peppers! Am also growing the hot habaneros, Jalapenos, a Japanese one called Shishito, and the wonderful and difficult to get Greek Golden Pepperoni.

    The cost of a freeze dryer would purchase:
    All American cannier or two
    Canning supplies
    Dehydrator, two or three
    Vacuum sealing set up like Patrick builds, brake bleeder or two etc.
    Alternate appliances for cooking & heating
    DIY rain water system or bought
    DIY gravity water system or bought
    Solar equipment or generator
    Imagine how much food one could purchase to can & dehydrate & vacuum seal.
    The list goes on & on. For me , not purchasing a freeze dryer is a solid prepper choice. God bless us all.

    Add an apple in the middle of your green tomatoes and they will ripen sooner :)
    Dehydrated green tomatoes are yummy. I might try green tomato leather too.
    Cloth covers - could we use cheesecloth? I laugh now that I see that in writing...

      Yes, you can use cheesecloth but some of it is not a good idea to cut if you need it to be a certain size

    Awesome!!! You can store this dehydrated cheese in a mason jar...should an absorber be used to help keep it dry?

      I vacuum seal anything I am putting away for longer term storage and the ones I am working through I just make sure I have an air tight lid on. No O2 absorbers needed

    I was thinking about cheese powder and tomato powder wrapped in tortilla and cut and fried or baked into combos. Pizza combos. My favorite ones are in MREa now. The store ones are not as filled like they used to be. The recipe calls for starch I'm guessing to stretch and straighten it out like a long rolled tube or something but I'm sure homemade wouldn't necessarily need the starch.

    Tried it this weekend but layered it too thick and my dehydrator was too hot so the bottom trays were hard to get off the towels without ripping. The upper racks were great!

    Awesome video Heidi. 😀 I am excited to dehydrate the cheese, as well as the eggs and milk.
    I had really good luck preserving hard cheeses with wax (food grade), which then require no refridgeration. I found it even made the cheese tastier. I use it for the bigger cuts of cheeses... although I have considered doing little baby bels. What are your thoughts? 🤔

    I work in a hotel that has a breakfast each morning. They throw away so much food. I bring home the small omelets with cheese each day. Do you think I could dehydrate them. I dehydrate the egg white omelets that have peppers. They make great scrambled eggs when rehydrated.

    Your videos always seem to fit in so well with what I'm doing at the time. I just spent the day going through, checking & reorganizing my dried stuff & I found a bag of cheese slices that I had dehydrated (my 1st) & there was a lot of oil in the bag but the cheese slices look really good so...I put them on a cloth dish towel (thank you for the idea) & I'm going to try & get them dry enough to powder. (Next time I'll freeze the cheese first & dehydrate on cloth.) I'm considering putting the cheese on the cloth in the dehydrator over night on very low heat to see if that would help pull the oils out so I can powder it. Anybody have any suggestions...I'm all (oily) ears😅
