Hi. I just moved to Virginia and am watching your lectures to learn more about the history of this state. I’m finding your videos interesting and helpful.
I'm a descendant of William Tracy. JOHN Smyth (not the same as the pocahontas John sm>th although they did meet) was in chains because he was in trouble with the courts in Gloucestershire prior to setting sail, it is the reason for the delay. He came over on the Supply ship and William had to secure his transport as a promise. John Smyth wrote about it in the Nibli papers. I'd love to get more information on who helped Williams wife and son Thomas get back to england prior to the massacre if anyone has any of that information I'd be very appreciative.
These videos are invaluable, sir! Thank you so much for your hard work! You are inspiring me and helping me condense complex subjects into clear, concise lectures as I create my first History survey class!
At some point, I hope to do a series on 19th century imperialism. You're probably most likely to see something like that in the spring. My focus during the fall will largely be on US History pre-1877 and European History pre-1815.
sir, your lecture was really helpful. I want a little more help. I actually want you to make a precise video or share a document which can provide us information of the "important events" chronologically, of ENGLISH, SPANISH, PORTUGUESE and FRENCH... I am actually confused about what was happening in all regions of the "NEW WORLD" at the same time, i mean the development by Spanish in SOUTH and CENTRAL and Britains in North and East... where all simultaneously making progress.. thanks in anticipation...
Fun Facts about John Smith He tried to fish with a frying pan once He stabbed a sting ray once and it stung him. He thought he was dying but once he survived he wrote that he had his revenge on the beast and ate it for dinner He wrote the first accounting of all the people in Jamestown and all the tools and provisions they had with them, and he was so salty at Captain Newport for the whole almost executed him thing that he left his name out of the original 7 chosen to rule the colony John Smith was a petty petty man folks you gotta love him
Tom Richey On one hand he's so full of himself, but on the other hand... he actually did do incredible things. I would love to find a good factual bio (I mean I want to read his autobiography too, but I have to take everything he says about himself with a grain of salt)
You could try “The Generall Historie of Virginia” by Captain John Smith. Yes, THAT Capt John Smith. Modern scholarship questions its accuracy. He liked to embellish his accomplishments. But it genuinely is a firsthand account of the early days of the colony. You can also try “A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia” by Thomas Harriot if you want to get an idea of what the early settlers knew about the Indians and what they didn’t. For the period immediately after independence, you can try Thomas Jefferson’s famous “Notes on the State of Virginia”

+Tom Richey Really appreciate it you did. On the subject of the Sun King, have you watch the tv show based on his life - Versailles. And if you have what do you think of it?
Hi, i found a old beach tree my guess is about 4-5 hundred years old about 3 feet or so around . On it is written Croatan and a rectangle with a strange symbol in the rectangle simular to a m but instead of a straight line it is more like a square block with two thinner blocks connected as a m would be. I was just curious if it might have any historical value related to the Croatan people living in Virginia in the 1500's?
Great video as usual! By the way, just in case you haven't watched it yet,Terrence Malick's The New World (2005) remarkably depicts this period of American (or English) history.
At some point, I'm sure. I'll be trying to turn out some academic videos over the next few weeks, but I'm not going to let this election go by without commenting a few more times.
Why was the first baby girl name Virginia dare and same the first colony was named as Virgina ? Same says Virgina dare was named in honor of British queen Elizabeth and same says same about the virginia colony.
Hi! Unsure if you can help - I am writing a thesis on the development of slavery in Virginia during 17 and 18th C. Have you any say in this? I mean, indentured servants, lack of/decline developed this... racism did too, and so did the British but any way you can develop these points?
I'd love to learn the motivation of the people who went to Virginia from 1607-1675. I have ancestors from that time period who weren't wealthy, they farmed their own land, many cousins still live there today. Why did they come to such a place?
This is a little late but my greatx7 grandfather was henry wheeler who was a indentured servant who survived massacre if you have any info about him please contact me
James Town suffered because they did not grow their own food along with the tobacco cash crop. Croaton was a small branch of Indians living in NC. THE 1622 may have been due to Pocahontas death and her child not returning to the colony.
Love these videos. When speaking about the Native Americans to better acknowledge their suffering beyond "think of them as victims of European settlement". I just feel like it downplays the serious and important history of cruelty,
+Josh Mitchell It doesn't downplay it as much as allow Indians to play something other than a stock character in history. The settlers of Jamestown did not have the resources to be very cruel at that point. If I were analyzing things in another time and place, it would be different.
Regardless of their abilities. The settlers went to someone else's land seeking their resources And contributed to the further colonial expansion. I just dont see the point in sympathizing with the first "invaders" as i like to call them.
And furthermore, people who smoke cigarettes are on a permanent high, and apparently not a good one because they always need more, and it is hard for too many smokers to do it in moderation, so it is not worth telling people to smoke less often.
Sir Walter Raleigh was not English as his real name was Sir Walter Dela Raleigh and that is Spanish. Most of the first people who came to Virginia were Sephardic Jewish Muslims, the same people as the Powatan Natives and they still live on the same land today.
Islam cut much of the trade routes from Europe to the South and to the East. The aristocracy of Europe felt forced to enter colonialism to feed their populations and start progress again. Islam dominated the Mediterranean Sea for about 1,000 years. It is not Politically Correct to highlight this very important point, but Virginia is an indirect product of this motivation.
Wow, thanks for these videos. You're one of the best teachers I've ever heard.
are u sure about that?

At some point, I hope to do a series on 19th century imperialism. You're probably most likely to see something like that in the spring. My focus during the fall will largely be on US History pre-1877 and European History pre-1815.

Captain John Smith is one of those people who gets MORE interesting the more you look into him. Not the case with most historical figures.
Tom Richey On one hand he's so full of himself, but on the other hand... he actually did do incredible things. I would love to find a good factual bio (I mean I want to read his autobiography too, but I have to take everything he says about himself with a grain of salt)
i had to see this cus of class, and you sold me on talkin about Bob 😂 Luv it brotha👌❤
Loved this video. Are there any first account documents that you would suggest, like Bradford's History of the Plimoth Colony.

I have slides ready for a lecture on Louis XIV's wars. Perhaps I should record that this week?
+Tom Richey Really appreciate it you did. On the subject of the Sun King, have you watch the tv show based on his life - Versailles. And if you have what do you think of it?

Explain why the baby girl and newly colony were named as Virgina and which one was named in honor of British queen Elizabeth1 ?
To my knowledge the word was actually Croatoan. There is an archaeological museum on the island. At the museum they teach of Manteo and Wanchese etc.
Great video as usual! By the way, just in case you haven't watched it yet,Terrence Malick's The New World (2005) remarkably depicts this period of American (or English) history.
Very helpful! Thanks.
i dont watch these videos to get good grades or pass any class, im not even in a class right now, just really like these videos lol
I thought croatoan was craved on a gatepost of the fort and Cro was carved on a tree
Great video as always Mr. Richey! Do you have any political videos coming up?
At some point, I'm sure. I'll be trying to turn out some academic videos over the next few weeks, but I'm not going to let this election go by without commenting a few more times.
Tom Richey Awesome, any videos are much appreciated. They are all great:)

Now, I finally understand how you got hooked on this channel!

Poor King James. His mother was executed and his son executed. Dangerous neighborhood. Richard in Dallas.
I thought that the Roanoke colonists joined the Croatans. Weren't there reports of blond-haired natives within the Virginia/North Carolina area?
That is one of the theories and there were reports but there is no conclusive evidence that this happened.
Don't smoke, watch the rest of this lecture instead. Lol, nice pick up line. :)
Thnx for the vid!
Glad this was helpful. I'm looking forward to a great year of APUSH!

I though it was a spanish saying from the XVI century, "the sun never sets on the Spanish Empire."
We payed off our debt in VA where as the rest of the colonies decide to swim in it.
can't I smoke AND watch your videos?
Only if you watch the ads!
Elizabeth I "the virgin queen". Now that is hilarious.
I like this guy's videos but that is hilarious.

Doesn't clash with the Mainstream history Fire. It falls under the phrase "the Muslims cut-off European trade routes" just with more details. ;)
King James hated smoking and wrote a book against smoking.
colonial virginia had lots of Irish also
The Powhatan picture is not authentic. The indigenous people didn't look like that
10/12/21!
This guy is gorgeous
My family grew tobacco when I was a kid.
