  • This baby poop green bathroom had to go! I removed everything, added some bold new paint, a moody wallpaper, and lots of whimsical details. And the best part is that this was (mostly) a no-demo reno-only a little trim removal! SO satisfying to exercise my design brain a bit after all of the manual labor I've been putting into my parents' porch.

    Sometimes less is more. You definitely didn't need a backslash. Bathroom looked so much better. Love it😊

    YAY, YOU for not settling for a bathroom that gave you that baby poop vibe, lol. So glad you didn't end up keeping those backsplashes, too. Thank you for showing us your process of taking the room apart. The mermaid vanity light is my favorite feature.

    I really love the colours in this! I liked the first makeover too, but you’re definitely right that this one fits better with the rest of your home, especially the „vibes“ - the former look was more modern pinterest-y compared to the moody romantic it’s now. And regarding the backsplash, I personally quite liked the green colours it added (contrast but still tied in with the wallpaper) but the biggest problem in /my/ view was the size. Both the mosaic and the copper one looked very tiny and swallowed up by the sink. That’s what made them look like an afterthought I suppose. Though you are right, the sink probably doesn’t need a backsplash, it looks great like this

    The first backsplash is giving an outdoor mat/stepping stone/lawn decor. Could be cool in a garden??

    Love it all! I would just put really low-light bulbs in the fixture to keep that moody look.

    It looks good! I like it much better than the brown. I really like the antique smoking stand. Too bad you spent so much time on the back splash, hopefully you'll find a future use for them. Nicely done!

    Love the makeover!❤. I watched the video very carefully but didn’t notice you mentioning the table or stool in the corner of the shower….can you please tell me where you got it or was it a DIY project?

    Such a beauty, well done! Question though for my own reference: would the wallpaper hold up long term given that bathrooms are usually high moisture rooms/areas?

    For dying the fabric needs to float. One solution is to put the WET fabric in a big pot and stir it constantly. - OR: She could have done it in the washing machine, filling in a strong solution of luke warm tea * (see next comment), and starting a hot wash. Or using a tiny bit of store bought yellow/brown dye which is easier to use in a washing machine than a self made liquid dye that is not very concentrated. Which poses the question of how to get that into machine.
    And it is a good idea to wet the fabric evenly before any dye job to get even results. And to wash it (even if it is new) and to give it an extra rinse.
    Most machines will start with pumping excess water, so you cannot fill in via the open door or lid (for a topwasher) and then start a cycle. If you do that the machine will recognize, it has some extra water to get rid off, and you will lose your dye.

    • @franziskani
      @franziskani 2 дні тому

      And very often ! there is no possibility to open the door after the cycle already started. Miele (a high end European brand) does allow this, if the water level is not too high (starting the cycle, after the short spin during the rinsing).
      So you just have to make sure not to spill, a larger garden watering can with a long "outlet" should do the trick. Or an empty washed out bottle for liquid detergent.
      If you cannot open the door once the cycle of a front washer machine started, you add water via the drawer where you give in detergent. Draw it out a bit, max. halfway and _use the watering can._ Do nNOTot use a bucket or any vessel without a _good spout_ or long _outlet_ - a vessel is needed that makes it very easy to target the water to the right place and to _control water flow._ Not too much water coming out, or there will be spilling even if your aim is true.
      You can get dampness to the wrong place of the machine housing if you spill a lot or force in too much water too quickly and that might cause errors. Luckily there is a chance that they vanish if the machine can dry out (after a few days of nervous waiting), but you do not want to offend your electronics or sensors.
      It is not hard - but for filling in via the drawer you need something very well suited for the job and you need to set up everything, so you can work with good speed, but also not too fast, and that you can control the water flow. You cannot improvise here. What also works are bottles for liquid detergents. They have a wide opening which makes it easier to fill in whatever you want to get into the machine. And they allow you good control of water flow and good aim - comparable to a garden watering can.
      Even if the machine also opens the valves and starts drawing water (like it usually does) - normally there will be no water spilling from the detergent drawer.
      Add water SLOWLY though ! especially if the machine already draws water.
      Sometimes you can reduce the water flow easily, if that valve is in reach (on the wall). That is a good thing they SHOULD be turned fully to the right and left once a year, so they do not get stuck in their position. Reducing the water flow is a way of allowing yourself more time to get in your not-so-concentrated liquid.
      Normally you could even let the machine draw the water it wants and then ADD your fluid. If it is not more than one bucket, it will be tolerated. If the water level in the machine would get too high (if the bucket is large) you could get an error. Not quite half of the door glass is the max. you can do. You can fill in while the machine is running, _take your time_ and watch the progress.
      If you CAN, pause your machine, which prevents the machine form drawing water (so only your liquid is fed into the machine. So you can fill in a bit faster.
      Many machines do have a pause button w/o electricity the machine cannot draw water. If there is no break button, you can try out if it works to use the on/off button, but make the power loss short, and have everything at hand that you need to fill in securely.
      Depends of the tolerance of the programs - when the machine has more fluid in it than it would draw itself. I guess most machines have a lot of tolerance, but I once overdid it - and I did not have the manual at hand how to get rid of the error. Was not hard to do but you needed to know which buttons to press to clear the error, so you can start over and of course whatever was filled in, will be pumped away, so you lose the dye or detergent.
      Some machines however interpret a "longer" loss of power as error or they will wash but not heat up anymore (if in doubt do not heat up, it could be too much. Has to do with how the machine measures washing time and temperature).
      Usually a power loss of one minute will be tolerated, beyond that you have to find out how your machine works. Of course you do not want to rush if you have to fill in a lot of water within one minute. One watering can with the volume of a smaller bucket will be fine even in one minute (and you can fill that in even if your machine draws watert and with full flow), but if you want to fill in more fluid manually, you have to refill the watering can and that takes time.
      MIELE a high end European brand can be opened even when the cycle has started - as long as the water level is not too high. beyond that you cannot open the door. Unfortunately it does not have a break button, and also does not tolerate to be switched off for longer than a short time. So one has to be skilled and well prepared in order to add a larger quantity of water within short time. Think 2 - 3 large buckets. Here reducing the the water flow helped (the valve is in the wand, so it is easy to reduce water flow. Not too much or the machine will again give you an error ;)
      Have the manual ready. If you fill in water too quickly the machine might diagnose that there is a water spill or a problem (even if you did not spill anything) and give you an error. You can click that away - after the machine pumped away all the water, detergent, dye - but you need to know how to do it.
      This is the experience with frontloading washing machines, it should be easier to add water / fluids to top washing machines.
      It sounds more complicated than it is. but there are a few pitfalls and you have to get used to what works _your_ machine
      I find it useful to know how to add water to the cycles. Not only for self made liquid dye. The marketing around modern machines boasts about how little water they need, but that comes at the expense of good rinsing. And I also find that a higher water level during the washing cycle helps with results and likely it does less mechanical damage. if routinely add some water, after the machine is done with drawing water for the washing cycle. And If I happen to be around I add some to the rinsing cycles.

    Good job. Do you do it all alone ?? Or is it only the footage where we see you alone. - I admire your determination. There are a LOT of different steps, often small things but you cannot move on before you did them. Often you need to interrupt to get the materials. This is not easy to pull off alone.

    i love the scalloped mirror edges! do you have any advice for getting over fears/paralysis of decorating like this re: re-sale woes (e.g. i'll have to do a bunch of redecorating if/when we sell)?

    • @ReneeRenovates
      @ReneeRenovates  10 днів тому +1

      I honestly never think about resale potential! I have no plans to sell, but if I did, I’d say that you have to enjoy where you live while you’re living in it. Otherwise your home will always feel temporary and you’ll never get to appreciate it! Plus when I was touring homes, I always loved seeing homes with creative decor. I’m very against the idea of needing to see a home as a blank slate so that you can “see yourself in it.” I like a home that feels homey! And I’m sure many other prospective buyers feel the same way.
