Another note to those watching- I always wash my clothes from lightest colors to darkest colors. just in case there's a bit of dye left in your tub from a previous washing, it won't harm your next garment being washed. I learned that the hard way once.

I hand wash my clothes with soda crystals, borax, soap flakes (grated soap) and white vinegar, I always leave them to soak before washing and hitting any stains with Sards wonder soap - I’ve never found a stain to tough for Sards . Love your videos ❤️

Oh my goodness they are beautiful! Your the best vintage neighbor. So sweet, informative and helpful.
My Mama always soaked garments that could "bleed" in cool/ water with regular salt. She'd mix the salt in a cup with hot water. Stir it into the tub of cool/cold water. Then gently submerge the garment and let it soak for several hours. Then wash gently and rinse.
This is also great for dungarees.

As someone who collects lots of vintage clothes and was terrified to even try washing them, this video was a lifesaver! I have been using Woolite for my vintage clothes ever since. One tip my mum taught me is that for clothes that are dry-clean only or only worn for a short period of time, you can take a bit of Woolite and water, rub it on your hands and gently clean under the sleeves and other areas that might have been exposed to sweaty skin, so you can wear them several more times that way (also been leaning how to use a steamer). Thank you again for the tutorial and cleaning tips, these really helped a lot! Now if I can figure out how to wash my navy blue dress with the metal anchor brooch and white collar, neither of which I can remove from the garment....or that navy dress with white polka dots...

My brother told me about your videos awhile back and I love your house looking vintage. I, too, am a person that loves stuff vintage. We have a vintage wringer washer in the basement of our house. A 1948 Maytag wringer washer. Got it at a resale shop for $100 and it works like a dream come true. We use to go to the laundromat to do our laundry, both wash and dry, but when we got the Maytag wringer washer, we did our laundry at home ever since. We have a modern day clothes dryer in our living room though. Anyways, we bought a hose to attach to the bottom opening to drain the water after washing and rinsing it, and the faucet hoses for adding hot and cold water we had in our old washing machine before it stopped working over 10 years ago. But we love our washing machine and makes our clothes very clean like any other machine. Only problem is that we can't wash blankets in it, they're too big. Also, and the only downside is that we (literally always me) have to carry the buckets of drained water up the stairs and dumping it out back, but it's worth it for $100! And we have it since last August and we love it!

Efferdent is great for gently removing organic stains. You make a paste and put it on the stain. The mixture bubbles as is soaks, so it sort of gently “agitates” the stain as it soaks. It’s a trick I learned from a theatre costumer.

I absolutely love your videos and you use many of the same methods my mom taught me as a kid many, many years ago (which I still use to this day). My mom (may she rest in peace) mentioned to me that my great grama used a product called Energine on my great aunt's suits. It is a stain removing product and I believe was also used by dry cleaners of the time for spot removal. While it is no longer on the market you can still purchase it used on ebay. The one drawback is that it is a very strong chemical and in using with such old fabrics it may be too harsh on material that is now very delicate. Keep up the great work and remember that racism is not a value but rather a character flaw and the actual values of the 50's were quite wonderful. Home, family, community, morals, responsibility, church (which was an absolute cornerstone of every day 50's/60's life altho very rarely mentioned on the vintage channels for some reason). I really dislike the phrase "1950's style without 1950's values." I find it to be incorrect on a number of levels. We could only hope to bring back the genuine values of the '50's.

  • @jasminemoreno2881
    @jasminemoreno2881 4 роки тому +8

Yay! I’m super glad you posted this! I’ve been waiting lol. I find it interesting that clothes from the 1960’s and before didn’t really have washing instructions considering how some fabrics like wool or Rayon are more delicate. I’m assuming most people from the 1950’s didn’t really have access to washing machines like today, so they probably either washed by hand or took them to get cleaned. It reminds me of the show I Love Lucy and how they’ve mentioned laundry bills and taking their clothes to the laundry where others took care of their clothes who knew how to care for them. Anyway, sorry for rambling I found this video very helpful and I will defiantly be using these tips with caution of course. Thanks Laci!:)

Born in the 50s and it's nice to see you enjoy and take care of those lovely vintage fashions. I do remember wearing a poodle skirt with rick-rack trimmed blouse. They were a big hit at the church bazaars back in the early 50s for young girls. Johnny Cash would approve as well as the doctor in the house.

Laci, you are such an utter delight! Thank you to you and your fabulous fuzzy helpers for showing us how to care for our vintage! This is exactly what I do, though I haven't tried vinegar yet (thankfully haven't encountered anything too smelly!) One thing to warn you - oxiclean can interfere with the integrity of protein fibers like silk and wool. I won't wash either with it, out of fear that it will either outright destroy the fabric, or will result in disintegration in the future. One initial wash with a small amount of oxi might be ok, but it may be good to avoid using it regularly on your wools and silks. Anyhow, thank you neighbor, and take care!

I bought this gorgeous 1940s ice blue peplum top, with beads and tiny jewels around the hips, from Etsy, for only $25!!! Sadly, I don't know the brand, so I won't likely find the matching skirt. It has some yellowing, and a lot of dust, most of which came out with Woolite. So thanks for this video, it'll help with the rest! I actually have a 1940s lace top from Etsy that I won't wear anymore, because the lace had tears in it that the seller didn't mention, and, after hand-washing it very, very gently, I noticed a two inch tear in the sleeve (Edit: I had examined the shirt when I first got it, and that tear was not there until after the hand-washing) that scared me and made me so sad. So I will hang it where I can see it and enjoy it's timeless beauty, and use it as a pattern for a 1940s-style modern shirt😊 sorry for the long comment, but thanks for reading😊😁
P.S. I love "Vintage Neighbor." Makes me want to come by for a visit; I love the nostalgia😊

I LOVE the smell of clothes and especially sheets after they have hung on the line.

Yep, I use a futon and lay it on a large rack to air out in the sunlight for 4 to 12 hours a week (2-6 hours on each side, but only in 2h increments per side per day). Then I hit it to remove pollen/gnats. It whitens and becomes super fluffy, probably 50% thicker at least.

My grandmother taught me how to do my first load of laundry by hand with a old school washboard it was tough lol and u have to use a lot of arm strength to wash very good and we would bring them outside to air dry the old fashioned line and clip lol I'm 32yrs but it was a neat experience. .it was hard work but if ur power was out that was the best way to do it ..I'm thinking on buying myself a washboard in the future...I love ur videos such inspiration 😄😄😄

Oh. My. Gravy! That suit is so lovely! Also random but the starburst mirrors in the back made your posing at the end look like a photo shoot for a magazine cover. Very glamorous!

MAYBE ONE OF THOSE CLOTHS YOU CAN BUY THAT YOU THROW IN THE WASHER TO KEEP CLOTHES FROM BLEEDING WOULD HELP. IT SHOULD WORK IF YOU ARE WASHING THE GARMENTS BY HAND TOO. I ALWAYS ADD 1 TO 2 TEASPOONS OF NON IODIZED SALT IN WITH MY DARKS ALONG WITH THE WOOLITE FOR DARK CLOTHES.
