And in this case they were driving horizontally from east to west on the south side of Hokkaido, so that ocean there is looking south.
There is a compass there, but they didn't choose to use it. When looking straight up the road the compass is diagonal, the red is pointing diagonally to the right. That means the road direction is going in between north and west, meaning north west, which the road in real life is going in a north east direction, and the ocean there is essentially to the south west. Judging by how the road isn't that busy, you can negate most other areas of Japan and assume it is in the south of Hokkaido. The only other plausible area is the southern coast of Wakayama and Shikoku, but Hokkaido would be the most sensible guess, especially based on the conifers there.
