Je découvre cette version géniale mais j'ai aussi apprécié le concert donné à Nantes avec Bang on a Can All Stars en 2012. Et en plus, il y avait le "Maitre", Steve Reich. Inoubliable! Cet artiste est un génie.
bravooo! been listening to the 'bang on a can' version of 2x5 for years but this recording with all the instruments in beautiful stereo atmosphere is an absolute 10/10
I listen to this in the gym when I run. The tempo gives me a great pace to run to. So wonderfully well performed. All the best to the six guys involved, hope the war in Ukraine hasn't caught up to them. We're all better than the shittiness of imperialism and geopolitics... we easily fall victim to it, but we rarely ever see the benefits. Love to you all
This is amongst the best piece of Steve Reich's work performance that I have ever seen or heard. The staging, playing, recording, production, filming, editing and mixing are all superb! Also the piece itself is so good. The sound of this band is fabulous.
I love the use of stereo here to great effect. I wish all of Steve Reich’s phased music was played like this. It brings out a whole new perspective on his music. Come to that, perhaps 5.1 could be even better! The possibilities could be endless.
Coming into this as a guitar player, the use of whammy/ring mod adds a really cool texture to the overall sound. That said, the sound and playing by everybody is fantastic
I saw this at Carnegie Hall with Bang on the Can... The mix was so different at the concert than the recorded version. At the concert, the percussion was louder and had much more attack. This version gets much closer than what I heard at the concert. Also, when I saw this performed, they dod not do the overdub... they had 10 performers.
This is definitely the best version of this piece I've heard- I am in awe of your coordination and chemistry. I hope you guys are doing okay now, you are brilliant musicians and you and your countrymen do not deserve to suffer for one man's delusions. Держитесь!
@@stephenyeseta3926 So good... I just wish the Rhodes was a little louder, equal in volume to its twin guitar part. Overall, this mix is perfect (especially in headphones!) I really hope Steve Reich commissions these guys for his next electric project. In my opinion this and Mats Bergström's versions are the definitive ones.
Amazing! This is way better than Bang on a Can Live and even better than their recording. I am curious-is the Wurlitzer in the score or is it your adaption? Again, I am truly stunned. Wow!
Image: an escort carrier (36 planes) in the south Atlantic in 1943, the aviators stretched thin flying to keep watch over thousands of miles of ocean, their task only punctuated by the somber success of bombing a submarine on the surface and dooming its men to the sea or captivity. The ship takes rest off st. Helena and the crew and aviators explore the countryside and Napoleon’s hermitage, the melancholy Cold, windy damp of otherwhere. Then the call goes out-a German pocket battleship has slipped her blockade and is cruising the wild Atlantic I imagine shooting all of this as a montage prologue for a naval fiction war movie but hey
wouldn't I love the multi tracks...get the string quartet in, plus vibes, re-trigger the snares to......and some swells or arcs, perhaps a sequencer in the background. Has anyone got MIDI of it?
IMO this like a better alternative version of post rock ahahaha because its not that hard to listen/enjoy as an avant garde piece and more like 'what can we do with rock instruments besides rock' in a very reichy phasing/minimalistic approach ofc! i absolutely love it! oh the patterns...!!!
The audio production on this recording is quite nice and very suitable to Reich's composition style. I am very curious to know what model octave/transposition pedal the guitarist is using. Looks like maybe the Electroharmonix Pitch Fork?
@@SteveWang251 Yeah, that's the sound. You can hear at different points all through the song, actually. Interestingly an octave pedal is specified in the annotation of the composition, simply stating that particular notated phrases should be played with such a pedal rather than playing an octave higher in pitch. I assume this is for the desired timbre, but could be for other reasons. Pitch Fork is capable of polyphonic transposition, blending dry with octave up/down as well as other intervals in "Dual" mode. I'm not sure what settings the player used, but the timbre sounds to me as though there is additive harmony and not just octave transposition.
This is awesome but the visual editing puts the instruments on the wrong side of the screen compared to which audio channel they're in frequently and kinda ruin the whole point of split-screening multiple players at once.
Is Steve Reich aware of this rendition? It's the best I've seen on youtube so far! Great Work!
The stereo effect of the polyrhythms in this is amazing in headphones.
incredible performance and the mix is nuts

Ohhh Man this is Manuel Gotsching E2-E4.... Steve Reich... The foundation of electronic music...Instrumental... Amanzing!!!
Fabulous ! Steve Reich added this "pop" music with bass to his repertoire, incredible
This is what I needed this spring
I hear that! And this spring coming...
Immaculate recording and performance, gentlemen. This is now my favourite recording of this modern masterpiece. Thank you!
Aaaand down the minimalism rabbit hole I go again. So cool
Это русские ребята! Играют и снимают! Браво!
Wow... best version of 2x5 I've ever heard. On headphones of course.

The timbres used here are unlike anything I've heard from any steve reich recording I've listened to yet, and that's to your credit! Great work!
Agreed. But the high register of the guitar synth is a happy accident - 1 octave lower was intended but once Reich heard the effect he stuck with it.
@@JeffLowrie Basically all incredible sound design is at a certain level a controlled happy accident

As far as I know they used the ehx pog 👍
Ah nice one. I've seen people get a few different applications outta the POG
ЭТО просто валит с ног! Спасибо!

Stunning recording of one of my favorite Reich pieces, excellent quality
wow can't believe the Bang on a can performance finally has a rival! Quarantine used very well
Парни, ну это просто бомба! Спасибо!
wow. bravo!
Top of the top!
My favourite interpretation and production of this awesome piece. IMO it compares favourably to the recording overseen by Reich himself :)
Молодцы.
I am blown away.
Beautifully executed! Heart and soul. I was gripped by every passage.
amazing
Just fantastic!
Simply amazing. Terrific performance and recording.
Comment #100. My favourite Reich, and now my favourite recording.
amazing performance!!!
it's great, guyz!

WOUAHHHH! Un son Zappaien ( type " Packard Goose " ).Dommage qu'ils n'aient pas mis la belle Vicky Chow au piano!! Some more!!!!:-)))
Absolutely fantastic!
Bravo! So tight. Replacing the 2nd guitar part w/ a Wurlitzer (?) was a brilliant move. Sounds amazing...
I think it's a Fender Rhodes. Fantastic, isn't it?

Yes, it's a Wurli.
Brilliant, just as good if not better than Bang on a Can`s version !!!!
супер!!
love the rhodes on this rendition
Wurli not Rhodes. It's similar but quite different.
Hello! This was truly amazing rendition! I wonder where I can buy/find the sheet music for these Steve Reich composition?
Wow, this is amazing. You guys really make this piece pop. Subbed.
Amazing! This is way better than Bang on a Can Live and even better than their recording. I am curious-is the Wurlitzer in the score or is it your adaption? Again, I am truly stunned. Wow!
It’s their adaptation. The piece calls for four guitars.
the image of an urban simulator pops up, as well as the anime hayao miyazdaki

Title mean 5 players x 2 dubbs ?
Interesting - the second guitar has been replaced by a Wurlitzer electric piano. Not sure if that sound works as well, but the performance is A+.
I think it's a brilliant choice.
This but as a regular band. Do you guys play together regularly?
So good! I do like this version even better than the great Bang on a Can version!
What's the name of the band ?
The audio production on this recording is quite nice and very suitable to Reich's composition style. I am very curious to know what model octave/transposition pedal the guitarist is using. Looks like maybe the Electroharmonix Pitch Fork?
Yes, you're right, it's Pitch Fork. Thank you for your review!
@@SaveAsMusic Thanks for the reply and for the wonderful performance!
@@noisemodule Is that how he gets the chiming sound at 9:02?
