I saw Mats Bergström playing this live in Birmingham (UK) from the front row, so he was almost standing over me. I've never seen someone so totally rocking out. At the end I went to the stage door to see if I could get Steve Reich's autograph and Mats came out, but nobody seemed interested. I walked up and handed him my programme and pen and said, "You've made my night". He signed it, handed it back, and replied, "You've just made mine". Utterly spellbinding performance.
The key change at around 12:35 is hands down one of my favourite musical moments ever it gets me every time, only testament to this fact is the smile that creeps on the performers face when he is about to play the modulatiom
It's obscene that this is accorded the respect accorded the masterworks of the western musical canon. Most overrated, overtouted composer of the last 75 years.
I heard Mats play this in a small church in the middle of a wood in Sweden many years ago now, 50 people there I guess. It was advertised as a classical guitar concert, which it was, but after the interval he played this piece. Hard to describe such beauty and how I learnt about Steve Reich - I was already a pat metheny fan so you can imagine this was a special moment for me and the Steve Reich journey I found.
Finally listening to all three movents. This is beautiful, the way Bergström feels the music and the composition Reich has created are nothing short of incredible.
I had an Akai open reel tape recorder back in the 1980's that was also a two track and you could adjust the controls in such a way that you would get a slapback effect like he started out with. I swear, I recorderd hour upon hour of stuff like this and it was all just improvised. Not a lick of it exists today because I never figured anyone would listen to it except only a few close musician friends.
In college 1980 we listened to Steve Reich's "Come Out to Show Them" blew my mind. He has so many unique ideas. A lot of percussion section pieces as well
Terrible. One flat tone from beginning to end. Like watching "Fantasia" in black a white. You clearly can see the severely limiting nature of steel strings in this piece.
@john parker clearly you haven't grasped the concept of modern music. unlike classical and romantic music, which focuses on tradition or virtuosity, modern music (and art in general) conpletely ignores ancient art rules used by those in the past
I totally agree. This is easily the best recording of this piece that I have heard. It makes such musical sense in this performance. Very well done to all involved.
Probably in my top three performances I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. It’s truly a blessing for me to be able to hear the great things that happen when a great composer meets a great musician.
Be interesting to take this on with today's looper technology. Counterpoint in the Lydian mode with a stereo looper would be really interesting....might give this a try next time the girls are out for the afternoon. But really if you want to experience counterpoint at its finest listen to JS Bach Prelude 996 it doesn't get better than that.
Amazing performance. It is definitely on par with the great Pat Metheny and in many ways the best on UA-cam. At that Pat’s rendition is a bit too classical for my liking, while Mr. Bergström brings a lot of life and soul into this rather dry piece of minimalism.
You probably already know this, but you're right - fripp, bruford, and belew were all influenced by reich and admired his work and went to a lot of concerts of reich - hence stuff like waiting man, neal and Jack and me etc
@@gabrielbennett9053 I wouldn't call this type of music rock. This is avant-garde orchestral music. Just because it has a guitar in it, doesn't mean it's rock. I know rock is such a broad term these days, but I think, though the line is blurry, I can safely say this is not rock. At least in my opinion.
@@MM-vs2et No, no, I said post-rock. Post-rock is a rather broad experimental subgenre of rock. It's basic definition is "music that uses rock instrumentation for non rock purposes." A good example is the album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor, I'd highly recommend it if you liked this. However, in terms of classical music, I wouldn't say this delves into full avant-garde territory, despite being experimental. This definitely fits into Steve Reich's usual genre of minimalism.
@@gabrielbennett9053 a buddy of mine is obsessed with Godspeed You Black Emperor, but I haven't checked any of their music. If it's anything like Steve Reich, then consider me a fan. But in terms of rock instrumentation, does Electric Counterpoint count? Yes, clearly it's the guitar, but if we apply that reasoning, then wouldn't every song/music that's written with guitar is post-rock?
Enemies seems to manage just fine with two guitarists. The soundscapes might not quiiiite be as full and lush as this... but.... for having five less guitars, can't really get too critical.

Aaaaaaaaa
So good and they do it again at 13:08 and again later on 😊✌🏼
ABSOLUTELY the same here, sir :) Magic!
the modulation goes from e-minor (e - g - b) to e-flat major (e-flat - g - b-flat)
One of the best musical moments!

You can tell the guitarist is having so much fun playing that song.

The first key change in the last fast movement gave me goosebumps
such a good key change

Same here...every time!
Then,he goes to the key he played before, then replays the other key......it just sounds so surreal

The music of a real visionary
OPN has been the foundation of my musical taste for the past decade, can't believe I only just recently discovered Steve Reich. Loving it.
your favorite musician's favorite musician is always a treat, no matter the genre/circle
@@nostalgia_junkie I found him after Jonny Greenwood played this on a festival. I really like OPN too.. I think there is pattern somewhere here.
I just cried my eyes out to the last movement. Incredible.
My favourite Reich piece performed brilliantly.
The first movement is fretted with the left hand as a hammer-on, you can hear it, its not plucked. Its the best RSI piece for guitar yet written!
the best tone colour and interpretation of Steve Reich Electric Counterpoint!
Thanks for watching!

Masterpiece
Love the shots from the guitar mounted camera, especially during 1. Fast!
Always a favourite of mine.
Brilliant!!! Seen Johnny Greenwood doing this also, both of them are amazing 🎸👍
Beautiful! The last few minutes remind me a little of Strawberry Letter 23 by Brothers Johnson
Great performance by Mats Bergström
Must hear with headphones Wow!
it remaids me of Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells"... I came to Steve Reich because of a TV doc on "mezzo" channel called "Phase to Face"
Wonderful! Thanks to the London Sinfonietta!
Really fantastic performance. Love the camera work...especially at that glorious harmonic shift at 12:40
Entendu ce jeudi 16 juillet 2020 sur France Musique... un artiste à découvrir !
I'm so glad I discovered this masterpiece
Thank you
An incredible guitarrist playing an incredible masterpiece
Salute this! Absolutely wonderful playing sir.
Beautiful rendition. I am big fan of Reich's loved the tone in this performance.

Check out Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) playing this also 🎸👍
damn fine execution
Spectacular performance. First time I've heard Electric Counterpoint played by guitar. That final movement =)
god this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I know ☺☺☺♥
This is so exquisite. Really.
This is legit the best recording of electric counterpoint that has and will ever exist
danggg over pat metheny’s? i have to disagree

Like a more complex version of the instrumental tracks on the King Crimson album "Discipline".

It basically inspired American football so I guess
post-rock too. I guess, given the definition of post-rock, this sorta is post-rock to an extent.

How does this really work? Is he looping each sample?
It's simpler than that, the artist plays against a track (previously recorded) of up to 8(10?) guitars & 2 bass guitars.
that must be it. thanks
You could probably emulate some parts of it, but I think some of the 'feel' of the piece would be lost.
