What a fucking legend
Uncle Roger took us back like 900 episodes. Also, Sanji automatically gets the Uncle title.
Uncle Sanji do be sounding like the person you let him cook

Back when One Piece was actually good.
@@consume_vegetablesOne Piece has always been good. It was a little boring at the start like this episode.

"one tall, mysterious, handsome. And the other one ginger" was funny for me
same that had me dyingggg, I mean its true
The way i laughed 😭😭😂
To give some context to why Sanji was all mysterious and didn't just tell the kid what to do, its because thats how he himself learnt how to cook at the restaurant he used to work at. He was around the same age as the kid, but the head chef didn't baby him and guide him step by step, in fact he rarely showed him himself how to do certain things, so Sanji was always observing him cook and bit by bit learned his secrets. This is actually something more common in real life then some people think, when it comes to cooking, you pick up skills by observing other chefs at work.
Well said.
This is how my husband learned to do things by just observing, like cooking, playing guitar and tattooing.
Sanji didnt want to directly teach him cuz Sanji is a pirate and that kid was working for the Marines. You dont have to dig in too deep.
That plus Chef Zeff kick his ass if he screwed up.
@@JayDLaw yes, it's Oda, he hides so much symbolism in his stories, you absolutely can dig in as deep as you want LOL

Watching this episode of One Piece with Sanji teaching a cook rookie how to make curry is really making me want some right now lol
Same. I tried Japanese curry, it’s great
the curry… the curry is real
@Kalak-fb3lvWhat
Funny.... It's making me want tacos?!?
@Kalak-fb3lvClickbait, I repeat Clickbait, DO NOT CLICK!!!
For context; since Sanji is a pirate, he refused to directly give advice to the marine kid and only helped indirectly.
Yep. consorting with pirates in any way is a critical offense in the Navy. If the kid were caught he'd be kicked out, or worse: court martialed.
One more reason Sanji didn't teach the kid it's because Sanji himself didn't experience any tutoring from Zeff. He's just trying to do the same
Sanji learned to cook from Red Leg by kicks to the head lol maybe he just didn't want to start kicking the shit out of the little kid lol
That is not the reason. Sanji couldn't care less about it, it's just the way he learnt to cook, so he does the same with this kid. Cooking with a recipe is easy, learning the skills to do it without is what's hard when you are a chef
He knows the kid knows how to do it, but he also knows that you learn best by figuring it out yourself so just being told "The heat is too high, you are gonna burn the onions" He might forget next time. Him remembering the lesson means he will remember next time too. You dont generally give someone the answers, you lead them to discover the answers themselves.
The fact that it is more accurate than many cooking channels shows the attention to detail.
@UltimateGamerCCNot sure he wrote this episode though, it's a filler. Regardless, Oda is very cultured, so I wouldn't be surprised if he knew how to cook japanese curry.
Most YT channels will always measure the amount of ingredients to cook, which is time consuming to get the right amount. I just straight up toss the ingredients when it feels right. "Use the right amount Not the white amount" - Uncle Roger I forgor date 💀💀💀.
Its impressive when you also know that this is just a filler episode, the staff really spent time into researching just for an early filler episode, props to the Toei staff on this

Apples not only add a subtle flavor but they contain pectin which is a natural thickener. It’s used often in fruit pie making and canning for jams.
Looking to see if anyone knew this before I made a comment. Apple has the quickest releasing pectin of any other fruit I know. Citrus and berries take a very long time to extract, but apple is very quick. It’s also the second or third ingredient on S&B roux cubes from memory, after flour and vegetable fats.
Didn't know that. Thanks, Haukea!
Correct, pears too.
🤓
I was wondering whether the "body" here refer to flavour or texture. He said something like "koku janai" and according to dictionary "koku" means rich flavour. Given that definition, adding apples wouldn't be able to fix it.
I love that Nigel is so committed to the character that even his bloopers, transitions and parts to be cut are exclusively "Uncle Roger."
I just wish he'd done his meet and greets after his live shows as Uncle Roger. It would have been fun.
@@TheFattyKaratebut maybe also enjoyable to just meet his fans and not act the whole time…
The fact that anime cooking gives me more knowledge than watching the actual cooking shows is just unexplainable
And the funniest thing is the anime is not about cooking
True but there is a lot of recipes in the manga and in the anime
most of food wars is fantastic for cooking techniques and creative recipes
In anime they teach with tips too
Very details

It’s just you are childish.
11:51 and it's all over the screen😂😂😂
The reason Sanji isn't giving the kid direct help is because Sanji is a Pirate, and the kid is a Marine. They're natural enemies, and Sanji ended up aboard the Marines ship. He wasn't obligated to help, but he wanted to. Love this episode.. and love the reaction!
Its not even so much that; Tajio wouldn't really have "learned" if Sanji was holding his hand the whole way.
By letting him figure it out himself, Tajio TRULY learned through his own experience, with minimal direct help.
Not to forget they both share the same dream of all blue
Sanji would betray Luffy to help Tashigi
@@aidanjanemcintosh6919 nope. As seen with CP9, while sanji is a simp, he wouldn't betray his crew, even for a beautiful woman like Kalifa
@@Invooo You don't know the characters at all if you believe that.
Actually the apple is super correct, but they didn't show how to use it. Much like korean marinades use pear for sweetness, japanese curry (like vermont) use blended apples for the pectin to thicken the curry and the fructose to add a depth of sweetness and flavor. That's an easy way at the middle stages of cooking to introduce more flavor and get the consistency you're looking for if it isn't quite nappe.
This is very interesting as someone who grew up eating curry every day but this is so novel and alien to me

One interesting thing is that this One Piece scene was definitely inspired by Japanese Navy traditions, where curry is the dish served every friday.
is this really a thing? that's cool ^^ dint knew that
I didn't know this! How cool. In the UK it's traditionally fish and chips on a Friday.
It's mung beans soup here in the Philippines.
To add, this is how curry rice get popularised in Japan by, from their navy tradition, to the masses
As a Japanese person, I can confidently say that this is true.
The Navy is isolated and has to cook with limited ingredients.
The reason is simple: curry allows you to cook parts of vegetables that you would normally discard, such as their skins.
It was also praised for being able to change the ingredients, for being highly nutritious, and for going well with rice.
Calais was chosen as a way to mark Friday each week, as the sense of dates becomes vague at sea, as is the case with submariners.
Pretty awesome the animators actually got every detail of the curry correct, and made sure every frame was right with every step.
This kind of small story arc is what makes the older One Piece episodes shine compared to the newer ones. The newer episodes were great at their own, but the old ones hit different.
Holy this is my favourite video out of all uncle Roger’s videos 😭 (I love sanji)
Despite Sanji is normally seen as a perv in the later episodes most of the time, there are a couple episodes where he genuinely cares for others especially with kids. Insert : into the grand line ost
Context: the boy was so nervous because this was the first time the head chef allowed him to cook and he was going to cook for some high ranking marines
Yeah this was his promotion exam. If he does a good job with the curry he is another official cooking student. if it sucks, thats another 6 months or so as the dishwasher trying to learn by overhearing him instruct the others. He may still do dishes until a new kid comes along, but he will also be getting directly taught and expected to make food, prep ingredients, etc. Few years he will be on his own ship as the cook and be letting the dishwasher overhear him talking to his own assistants.
And i think he also Scuffed the curry in the first place

@@tldoesntlikebreadbones and organs have stronger flavour than the meat, imagine meaty meatballs with bone marrow in them, of course, being anime, he ground it to powder with a knife, but still
God this episode takes me back. It's little filler episodes like this, (and the g8 arc) that makes the anime worth taking a look at as a reader of the manga.
Considering this was just after Alabasta, little standalone episodes like this were necessary. Though usually when they have a small battery of standalone episodes like this it's always Sanji who gets the best ones.
the reason Sanji didn't tell him anything is because he was testing the kid to see if he knew what he was doing wrong without actually telling him he was doing something wrong, Sanji is probably the best chef in the anime he has trained since he was younger than that kid that's how he knows so much, i think he saw some of himself in that kid so he wanted to helping him without actually telling him what he was doing wrong.
the reason Sanji helped him is because the kid said his dream was to find the All Blue, the same dream Sanji has and both were mocked by other chefs for believing it's real. Zeff saved and raised Sanji because he too shared the dream to find the All Blue.
so i was right then, he saw himself in the boy so he wanted to help him without actually telling him.

11:05 Honestly imagine you're an aspiring chef and you have to cook for a bunch of high ranking individuals from the navy, it's normal to be this nervous, specially being a kid
That's my thought too, cuz the white coats and expensive looking suits mean at bare minimum each of them are captains of their own ships. That's a rank that carries so much weight to the Marines in One Piece. I'd be shitting my pants if I were in the boy's position
"so weak"
Bro they don't know is the kid cooking this food
I know you is anime kids
it's normal to be that nervous at a cooking exam period. not to mention the heat produced in a kitchen will make you sweat
Sanji didn’t hint to the young cook directly because he’s a pirate, and the cook is from the marines. He knows that if he helps the kid openly he could get the kid in trouble
I figured it was more because he wanted him to feel like he did everything himself.
Nah the kid was nervous and was going to make mistakes because of it. Sanji dropped hints because he was confident the kid knew what he was doing and didn't want to just hand him the answer he wouldn't have learned anything that way.
All the jokes Roger made in this video are so unhinged and I’m here for it

Uncle Roger may be pleased to know that Sanji (the tall, handsome chef) is not only an excellent chef, but an excellent fighter too! Apples contain pectin which is a thickener. It's used mainly to thicken jam/jelly. I don't know how well it holds up to heat but if you grated a few apples into it they would change the consistency.
Apples dissolve into the sauce if you cook them long enough; so long as he didn't add them at the very end he should have small enough pieces that they cook down, but if you add them too late you might get strings of apple in the final product.
It's a question of where you want the sugar - if you want the sugar to be subtle and well-married with everything else, add it to the end of caramelizing the onions. If you want to taste apple front and center, add closer to the end.
Its actually also something done with bolognese!
Italian bolognese has various vegetables in it that are roasted along with the onions and meat, then allowed to simmer. The cell walls eventaully break down and it dissolves into the food. You then generally add some water from the spaghetti (which itself also contains starch), which gives it a velvety texture.
@@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger in a curry i imagine you want that blend of balanced flavors not something sharp cutting through all other tastes, so I'd add in with the onions personally.
Hey Uncle, i am happy you chose to review this anime and look over its amazing cooking. However i wish to explain why Sanji chose to be subtle about the hints instead of straight forward, because it actually is a testimate to who sanji is. He knows if he is just blunt and pushes the kid in the right direction, the kid will be less likely to try, where if he helps the kid without being brutish and blunt, he knows the kid will learn, but it wont scare him off from trying to cook.

Watching uncle roger is actually really inspiring because he tells when the ingridient is wrong or correct
I honestly forgot about this episode since it was some 15 years ago. But I love it. Wish that the fillers would be more like this
I hope Uncle Roger will be reacting to Sanji vs Chef Jessica next from the G8 arc. Really gets to show you how resourceful Sanji is and why he's a great cook
He got hit with copyright. Between this and all the strikes DBZA got, I guess Toei doesn't appreciate fans or something.
these sence is too short for his videos
i showed my dad one of your videos and now he always says "haaaiyyyaaaaa" 😂
9:38 death stare 😂😂 I cracked up
Same
An interesting tidbit, every Japanese Naval base has their own unique curry.
2:30 Now I want a full video of Uncle Roger roasting the interior of the apartment 😂
lol
I really like Sanji's approach to "teaching" this kid. He could've taught him the exact steps and methods to make a delicious curry, but the kid wouldn't have remembered it that way. By taking the hints and remembering what his head chef taught him, he figured out why certain steps have to be taken while preparing the recipe and how omitting them can change the final result.
This is why I enjoy making recipes from cooking channels like Kenji or Adam Ragusea because they explain the food science behind their methods, and also offer you other options to achieve similar results. Anyone can copy a recipe, but it takes practice and experience to be able to improvise and adjust the recipe to your liking.
7:43 Uncle Roger : who the f this long arm guy???
Even "The Most Popular Anime" can't escaped from Uncle Roger's roasting 😂
0:35 exactly, one piece had dark moments also such as child labor.
@@charlesgabrielregidor30 That is true but they live in a world of pirates🤣🤣
Sad but child labor is still prevalent in many developing countries.
0:15 I just saw that episode

We need an Uncle Roger cook book. Covering stuff like fried rice, curry, etc.
