This is the first video on the instructional removal of the Collet. Not even the manual on the Gimitsu 4040 has instructions on this. I am soooo glad I found this video. It was informidable and well recorded. Accolades to you PAW PAW
You're so right about the manufacturers who generously provide the collet with absolutely no instructions for how to change them. Thank you for your quick, helpful tutorial. It was just what I needed!
Thank you! I'm new to CNC and this was my first bit change. I spent the past 30 minutes trying to figure out why I couldn't get the that nut back on the spindle thread. I was way over-thinking it. You just saved me and my son a bit of frustration. Thanks again!
Great tip, I used it and improved on it. I ground the point off the screw, used a piece of heat shrink tubing to cover the threads and the “point”(that I ground off). Now it’s comfortable in the hand & safe.
Thanks! This video saved my bacon- I’m completely new to CNC machines and how to go about changing to a 1/4” collet my 3018 Pro had me confounded until I saw this. You rule, Paw Paw! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the quick how too. I just got an amazon special 2.2kw water cooled spindle with an er20 collet and came with 14 other collets but had no idea how to remove them to swap em out. You are right I have never seen anyone else talk about how to swap them, and no surprise Ididn't get any info or instructions with this spindle kit. Thanks Paw Paw
***** IMPORTANT NOTE***** A lot of people don't understand that the nut is actually machined offset inside. When you push a collet out you need to push a little sideways and it will easily come out with or without the screw. If you try to push evenly on the collet it won't move and that's the way it is designed. When I first got my collet set I tried to very lightly tap the collet straight into the nut and that ended with me having to buy a replacement collet. Sideways is the only pressure you ever need to remove an er collet! Thanks for posting and take care!
The 1/8 inch collet my mill came with comes out fairly easy like you show, but the new 1/4 inch collet has to be removed with a dowel I ground down to size and a hammer. Pressing the 1/8 in collet in is also easy, pressing the 1/4 in collet into place requires squeezing it in with the vise...
Im not sure about the exterior diameter, but the inside diameter fits the 1/4 bits I have dead on. I ordered a second cap for the collet to live in permanently, so it wont be a problem anymore. Wouldnt it be great if you could buy a tool, and then never have to spend more money on that tool to keep it working?@@PawPawsWorkShop
I don't know if they sell the bottom nut separately but I have the 3018 SE and the 4040 XE. I found it easier/quicker to keep one with the 1/8th inch collett and the other with the 1/4 inch collett and swap them as necessary. I had been struggling popping the old colletts out, maybe because I wasn't sure I was doing it right by applying pressure with a large screwdriver. Your videos are always very informative.
I have the 3018 and never was able to set it up completely. Do you have any vidies on the complete set up. I would love to start using my cnc 3018 pro machine
Thanks mate, I hoped you could save me a lot of grey hairs but sadly I wasn't the case. I have a Triton router with a nut and a collet and tried the same trick but there was no chance to get this damn collet out. If anyone has an suggestion please let me know.
You also need to tilt the collet in correct direction... ie find the direction where the collet tilts the greatest then push it out with the screw head as per video or something similar (I use a flat head punch).. until I did this (ie found the right direction to tilt the collet) I couldn't get mine out.. after I learned that the collet NEEDS to be tilted in correct direction, it is now routinely easy.. do the same in reverse for insertion.. hope this helps!
Hi, Thanks for the vid good info, I have a question so I have a er11 1/4 “Colette, Er11 nut , when trying to enter the Colette it won’t snap in. Any suggestions
@@PawPawsWorkShop Ok i understand, THANK YOU. Do you maybe know another solution? Instead of buying for each bit size always a collet together with a collet-nut...
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! LOL To easy. You could not have made this video at a better time. Now, I will ask. Will this way work on the Dewalt router too? Thank you for all your videos!!
@@PawPawsWorkShop I just learned about (and bought) collets for my wood lathe -ER32. But was not sure what other sizes were for or where used. So thanks Paw Paw, for the size info.

It sound like it may be in mm and not actually a 1/4” collet

Hi there and thank you for this great information. Can you tell if the gasket is round or flat
No gasket. It is a metal ring similar to a washer
Great video, but can’t find the one where you carve with 1/4 in place?
thanks! great & brief how to change collet!

Hi, Thanks for the vid good info, I have a question so I have a er11 1/4 “Colette, Er11 nut , when trying to enter the Colette it won’t snap in. Any suggestions
You have to twist and put them in at an angle
Thank you for the tip, but I chose to buy spare ER11 nuts. They cost next to nothing. I just change the nut and the collet with it.
I agree, I have the ER11 nuts set up with the different sizes for the various bits. It makes it simple to change the bits. Thanks for watching
Hi, can you tell me how to remove the ER 11, not just the collet, from my Spindle 500? A thousand thanks.
It’s friction fit. If you take the nut off and the collet does not come with it, then it is stuck. You may try a little WD 40.
Thanks
Now I've bought a DWP611 for my Vasto, all my collection of ER11 1/8" bits is obsolete. Is there a collet nut for 1/8" bits compatible with DWP611 ?
I see if I can get the link. I know Amazon and Inventables both carry it. I’ll check for you

Con you use these collets with the collet nut also for the Dewalt dwp611/d26200 ??
No, the er11 collets will not work in the dewalt router

Anyway to use 6mm shank bit in a 1/4 inch collet
No, order a 6mm collet for your router

Sir you make a lot of sense but my makita 3612 br router has nothing to grab or push

The dewalt router is even easier. It just slips out, no ring
@@PawPawsWorkShop I wish it was as easy as you say. I cant get it to snap out. I tried the way you did it and no go. Any tricks??
Is that what is know as an ER32 collet ?
This is the ER 11

You’re very welcome
thanks - good tip
I can't get mine out at all. I don't want to break it. Yours looks nice and loose but mine is too stiff. Pretty frustrating
Some are just tighter than others. Once you get one out it will become very easy
Just angle the collet and apply pressure outwards to it. It will slip out of the locking ring. No need for a screw head and risk damaging the collet.
If that works, great! Whatever works
Sir Thanks a lot

Like your tip, solved my puzzle, 1/8 bit is too weak, I wanna to use my router's 1/4 bit
Awesome
Tnx Dude...
My pleasure
2:18 for the solution
Thanks
🙂👍👍👍👌❤❤❤
Thank you very much
It doesn’t work
Technically you do not need to use the screw. You do, however, need to move the center part all the way to the side using some pressure to release it
