Hi! I would like to correct something. Fountain pen inks are almost all water-based. Dye based inks wash out easily while pigment based inks are the permanent ones. Noodler’s are a different species since they use waterproof dyes. Sheen, shading, and shimmer are properties of inks, and not types.
Thanks for sharing!
I recommend the Preppy. Europian nibs (Lamy is German) are never as fine as Asian ones and the Japanese nib is especially fine. That said, other reasons to get a Preppy: it's the smoothest cheaper pen out there. The sealing mechanism in the cap has been put to test and the pen was able to write after a year forgotten in a drawer. It's as low maintenance as a fountain pen can get.
I was able to get a Preppy as I grew my collection. Thanks for sharing!
I loved my preppy but after a few days use it doesn’t let ink out on a downward stroke which makes me sad
Yung dalawang nag dislike walang pambili 😒😒😒😒 This is a really good guide for beginners with fountain pens
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA :))))) salamat, Jenny!
Those pens you’re holding in the thumbnail are GORGEOUS.
In love with that yellow one.
“Beginner-friendly” collection. Yes,I like that approach. I just ordered my first fountain pen a few days ago. And, while I’m awaiting delivery, I’m going to a local pen shop to purchase my second. It’s my birth month. So I’ll have to try to not get too carried away 😅
love this video! I recently got super cheap ones from shopee, like below 100php (super newbie so I didn't want to spend much haha) & they're decent I guess? So now I'm obsessed with inks and looking to decide for my first ever legit fp. I'm eyeing the Kaweco based on this video they just look so good and dainty. Hope to see more fp content here (more journal with me vids probably?) as always amazing content :)
Yes! You can also try beginner pens like Pilot Kakuno or Platinum Preppy, they're both great as well. Doesn't hurt to work your way up. Happy writing!
@@AbbeySy I recently got a Preppy and I love it. I also grabbed the Diarist bundle seeing that it has a yellow Preppy in it :)
@@myersdessine3719 YEESSS!!!!
Thanks for this informative video on fountain pens! I have been a fp user for more than two years and it's been a learning curve to refill the pens and to use them. Also I love the fact that you can refill the pens with any ink! That's so cool!
I think our fp channel is making us feel waay more educated with fps haha
Yeeeesss to the fp channel! Hehe
came here from ig to tell you that this is well produced and edited + i learned a lot from this~ def wanting a lamy safari now!
tysm!!
I impulse bought a LAMY Safari two days ago, and it just arrived today. I have been reading up on fps ever since I saw the LAMY display case in NBS, and I've always wanted to own one for my first fp experience. So now that it's here, I look around and have watched videos on maintenance (turns out the Safari donesnt need much cleaning, and I'll be using cartridges for a while just to get used to the pen before moving to piston converters) and stumbled upon this!
I also got the Mango in EF, and I love it already. I can't wait to write (and maybe draw some) with it!
Enjoy!!! LAMY is a great starter pen. It's still my personal fave from my stash.
My favorite beginner pens are the Pilot Metropolitan and TWSBIs. But in general, my favorite pens tend to be made by Pilot and Sailor. I’m more interested in the nibs and the way they write so my preference goes to those two. Currently, my favorite pens are the Pilot Custom 823 and the Sailor King of Pen. My favorite pen with flex is my Pilot Namiki Falcon with custom Spencerian grind. My favorite papers are from Rhodia and Mnemosyne.
But really, any fountain pen is infinitely better than a ballpoint. So everyone get a fountain pen and enjoy!!!
would love to try KOP! 😍
Omg! I wanted to buy my very first one soon because of this video. Thank you so much po!
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this video!!! ❤️
I just got so much into pens (got crazy buying 5 different ones...). Are you supposed to store them upright? Or horizontally? Or what? Thanks a lot!
Great video. I just sprung for some fountain pens to do calligraphy & drawing. I order 12 different colors of ink cartridges. I didn't realize that there's 2 different sizes. I got the smaller 2.6 cartridges instead of the 3.4 mm size cartridges. I learned this the hard way after forcing the 2.6 into a 3.4 sized pen. 🤣🤣🖋 💨💦 Luckily it was water soluble black 🖤 ink. Lamy has a converter, but, I saw this as an excuse to order some Jinhao pens for the 2.6 and ordered the right sized cartridges. I love the Kaweco pens! I have found that if I'm inspired by the pens, I use them. My handwriting is improving, too. It's suffered from technological advances in keyboards & email. I'm 54 and had to learn cursive. I had a calligraphy set at 13 and loved it! I can see that I am going to have several different pens. Some are works of art. #InteractiveArt 😊🎨
Thanks for watching! 💛 Glad you are enjoying fountain pens.
Thank you ate abbey🥺❤
[UK, May 2023]
Fantastic video!
And absolutely - good shout pointing out that you don't 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 to write in cursive!
One can simply enjoy the process of literally putting ink on paper - that action alone contains most of the magic of the experience.
Exactly!
Great video I have the Lamy safari,I love it,although I think I need to learn things like flushing etc.i use my fountain pen for intuitive ink drawings.
Ohh, yes! You'll find a lot of Lamy how to here on UA-cam :) check out Goulet Pens!
thank u.. 😍😍
I always wanted a Lamy FP but couldn't find piston converters, can you link or give recos on shops?
LAMY has its own converters, you can check the links in my description on where to get them.
Hi :) fountain pen newbie. Just watched your fave fountain pens 2021 video. What cartridges would be suitable for the preppy pen and the Lamy and Kaweco? As in can I just use any brand cartridge in any pen? :)
Hi I'm not the video owner but I want to answer your concern haha.
Some brands like Platinum have a different mechanism from standard pens, so unfortunately you're stuck with buying their cartridges until you get your own converter :)
Pilot and Lamy cartridges are proprietary also. If you don't want to buy converters, you can take an empty cartridge, use a blunt ink syringe to flush it out, then refill it with your choice of bottled ink.
You are way more advanced than I, and you gave me great insight about pens. I'm older, retired, and just getting started! Great job, and thanks!
Aww it's never too late! I'm happy to help somehow!
I'm currently using jinhao fountain pens, they are cheap and beginner-friendly. I want to purchase a Kaweco and Lamy if I have a budget
Yes I’ve heard Jinhao is great 👍🏼
@@AbbeySy I finally placed an order with the Lamy Safari in savannah green after watching your other video about fountain pens lol
wahahaha!
I bought a fountain pen for 88 pesos in SM dept store years ago(like 3 years ago or much later). I still have it tho I'm not using it anymore. Question: is there a specific side of the tip where the ink comes out nicely? Because when I tried it again yesterday after I changed the ink, the other side is thinner than the other. Can't explain it very well sorry 😅
Hmm I don't think so...? You should try tilting the nib and see how the ink flows.
There is. Let's call "front" the side where the nib metal is flat and you can see that triangular shape, with the "hole." When you are writing, the front should be what you are able to look as you write, as it's the side with the most ink flow. If you rotate the pen 180 degrees, you will see the "back" it's more the plastic feed view than the nib and it's also the side with the least ink flow. You get thinner lines this way. The pen was not projected to be used this way but there is nothing wrong with it. It's just usually less comfortable to write this way.
Interesting video
Because of ur video I was inspired to buy one hehe
yay!
Tips on grip and how to hold it? My right thumb is a little sore 😅
Oh noooes! Relax. Don't have a heavy grip with fountain pens, but it's definitely a learning curve. I'm sure Goulet Pens has videos and tips on that!
Do you have recommendations for ink on regular Moleskine notebooks?
I suggest quick drying ones as Moleskine paper isn't as fountain pen friendly compared to other notebooks
@@AbbeySy thanks!
How do i know if i should dip the whole pen when or just the tube
For loading an ink
It can also depend if the pen fits the ink bottle or no
what lipstick did you use here?😀
lol i don't remember :))
My friend from London gifted me a Harrods fountain pen....I don't know how to use it...😅😅😅😅 But I'm so excited to use it.
Omg haha you can do it! Most fps have the same components inside! It will be fun 🤩
try the budget friendly friends. I suggest moonman's eyedropper pens.
This is personal preference but I recently got the kakuno!
@@AbbeySyI wanted to recommend that pero feeling ko meron ka na 😬 metropolitan is good too. you can try platinum preppy too. it is available in a 0.38 nib and cheap too. What I love about it is kapag nasira yung body or you wanted something colorful Platinum introduced their mixed and match Platinum 200 body parts. I now have an Ube cheese platinum pen with a preppy nib. 💜💛
You can also get the same nib size I think sa Platinum Prefounte, Platinum Plasir, and Platinum Meteor. Hihihi.
@@Ankaris11090 I got a Preppy din! Hahaha. I like it so far :) Thanks for the Platinum info! Been exploring more of Japanese pens too!
Try a diplomat aero.
awww i also recently got into the world of fountain pens and my first one was the pilot 'kakuno'. i agree that you need to do some research bcs like what happened to me my pen suddenly stopped writing * sweats nervously * but all it really need is a deep clean lol 😂 and btw big thanks for this video for some recommendations 💛
oh noo! usually there's just some cleaning needed or the ink may have dried D: I just got a Kakuno too, I'll be doing a review on it soon :) no problem! Thanks for watching!
Are you from the Philippines? I grew with Tagalog in my family and your accent sounds familiar.
Yes! I was born in the Philippines and Chinese by blood.
Uhhhhh totally arent considering buying ink pens bc of heartstopper......(love your accent :))
haha I have to watch!
Hi Abbey. You can join Fountain Pen Network-Philippines FB group. 😉😉😉
i'm part of the group but not active:) I like lurking at the palengke :)))
Gosh, your penmanship is beautiful (while mine is pathetic😢)!
thanks!
