My parents are from Guangzhou so I was raised to speak cantonese at home. I was born and raised in Argentina, so Spanish is my first language. Growing up my parents forced to to learn Mandarin too, so there’s that. I moved to the U.S. when I was 13 and studied abroad in France recently and now I can finally say I’m fluent with that language too 🙃 it’s cool to know there’s someone else out there who can speak the same languages

Christopher Lee I think it is a great asset to have multi-cultural parents. Mine are not, but I speak several languages because of my ethnicity. Je suis une Algerienne :). Because of that, I can speak Arabic, English, and French (because of colonization). Since Arabic is a very solid language, it made it easier to learn other languages like Japanese and Spanish. I am glad I have the ability to learn more :) I definitely am interested in learning more Cantonese and/or Mandarin and reading Xianxia novels helped to make it easier to learn. I think to really have it easy while learning languages, you have to enjoy their culture first. Just my two cents.

It's interesting hearing about your multilingual experience whilst growing up . I am Belarus and Belgian . But I have been living in Switzerland since childhood . I attend a international school so I learn English , French and German. At home with my mum I always speak Russian and with my dad I speak English. But when our whole family is together we only speak French 😊😂 A lot of my classmates are surprised when they hear about this . I can definitely understand the situation you might have been in whilst being raised with so many languages ! I'm very grateful that I have the opportunity to learn several languages and communicate in them fluently! I like your videos 👍

Hahaha you made a typical mistake when speaking spanish. You said "estamos frances", it's natural beacause in english and french the verb "to be" it's the same but in spanish there are two verbs: "ser i estar". And sometimes it's confusing whether to use one or the other

Jinlong Yang the official name may be ROC, but that is a remnant of a bygone era. As an independent sovereign nation, free and separate from the CCP, we are now better know as Taiwan by most around the world especially in informal and non-governmental purposes. The people of Taiwan in an increasingly large majority prefer their home country to be referred to as “Taiwan”, and their citizens and one of their local languages as “Taiwanese”, and we are pushing to change our official name to Republic of Taiwan or just simply Taiwan. An official name is just that. An official name. America’s full name is the United States of America, Britain is officially known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Russia’s formal name in English is the Russian Federation, the Swiss Federation is is known as Switzerland, Australia’s official name is the Commonwealth of Australia, Argentina is the Argentine Republic, Afghanistan is the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Monaco is the Principality of Monaco, Bolivia is the Plurinational State of Bolivia, North Korea is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea while South Korea is the Republic of Korea, Vietnam is the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Venezuela is the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Uruguay is the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Samoa is the Independent State of Samoa, Oman is the Sultanate of Oman, Nepal is the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Mexico is the United Mexican States, Luxembourg is the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Jordan is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Guyana is the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Vatican City is officially the Vatican City State and sometimes referred to as the Holy See although they are different, Greece is the Hellenic Republic, Germany is the Federal Republic of Germany, Laos is the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and of course your favorite one to kiss ass, PRC. As you can see, official names don’t really mean much. It is what we prefer to be known as and what majority of the world knows us as that matters.

Honestly, I started watching your videos (including these older ones that YT is recommending... LOL) so I would've forget my Cantonese. I speak Taishanese/Toisanese at home but ever since I moved across the country (US) and none of my NYC friends are Chinese, I've lost my native fluency a lot. I've been progressively losing my native fluency over the past 3 decades of my life, as I've assimilated more and more with the American culture. None of my best friends are even remotely Asian, let alone Chinese. So all the years I spent in Cantonese Saturday school in Chinatown and the years I spent studying Mandarin in undergrad and of course my lifetime of speaking Toisan/Taishan to my parents and relatives... has gone out the window. Most traditional Chinese tv programming doesn't appeal to me but I find these videos of you speaking in Cantonese (esp the ones with your mom) really enjoyable and relatable to watch. Because Cantonese exists somewhere in the far crevices of my brain, I don't really need to return to school to recall this language. I just need regular attention to it. Really hoping for an osmosis effect by watching YT videos. And hopefully not completely lose such a big part of my cultural identity. Thanks for making these videos and sharing your life with us.

I can speak cantonese, mandarin, spanish , filipino , ilocano(filipino language) french and english
I learned cantonese in hong kong. Cause my filipino mom used to work in hong kong and so she wanted me to study 3rd grade there. She also wanted me to learn mandarin so i have mandarin classes
So i learned spanish in my school in the philipines since i'am mixed american filipino, i also studied in the philipines for 2 years 1st grade and 2nd grade
I learned a filipino language called ilocano. There are 4 languages in philipines visaya, ilocano , cebuano , tagalog. But tagalog is filipino's main language and tagalog is what every filipino learn in school. But since my mom can talk tagalog and ilocano, I wanted to learn it to.
I'am not so fluent in french although i'am trying to improve, and hopefully i could, i also learn french in school.
Lastly, since i'am american you would proabably expect me to be speaking english
And if you really wanna learn some languages, be inspired by it,
    Ye, thats it

Okay so China has many *many* different dialects which are all basically one language that became twisted and adapted depending on region. Sort of like how Latin is the root of English, French, Spanish, etc. People think 'Chinese' is a language but technically it isn’t, it’s just that the main (and official) dialect spoken in China is Mandarin, while Cantonese is the main dialect spoken in Hong Kong.

    • @sisciliewong3976
      @sisciliewong3976 5 років тому

In Hong Kong we mostly speak Cantonese, but we also understand and sometimes speak in Mandarin, so that might be why you were able to communicate in Mandarin in Hong Kong. However Mandarin is used mostly in Mainland China. Both of these are dialects of Chinese but they're not the same, as the words are pronounced differently. In Mandarin there are 4 tones whereas there are 9 tones in Cantonese.

Great video. Hopefully your videos will encourage more people to study languages and parents will provide their children a better language learning environment even if they aren't mixed :) I am not mixed but I can speak 5 languages too. Greetings from Malaysia

압릴 Mexican is not an ethnicity. Your father is just white not "and Mexican". It is not added to the blood, it is simply a nationality, like saying my dad is white "and Canadian" his nationality is irrelevant.

Mandarin and Cantonese are more or less ethnic languages. Most native speakers of those languages are also ethnically Han Chinese. There are ethnic minorities in China who speak Mandarin as the lingua franca and national language, but they learn it as a second language. There are also people outside of China who are studying it as a second/foreign language. But for the most part, Chinese is an ethnic language, like Japanese and Korean.
If you speak English, French, Spanish, or American Sign Language, then people will not even bat an eye. Those languages are not really tied to ethnicity.
