Unclogging Culverts Fixing Roads 1800s Cabin & Cows

- Unplugging blocked culverts and repairing the road in the pasture with the cows. This road at the ranch is getting washed out by winter rains. I repair some water bars and unplug some culverts that are allowing the water to run over the top of the road. And we get to see the cows being cows. I take a quick look at a small off grid cabin that dates back to the 1800s. It is in need of some restoration work.
Holy smokes, what an awesome dream of a ranch. Heaven on earth.
I'm voting YES on Save The Cabin!
Vote counted. 👍
I love the cabin, its a pity the deck is not in great shape, if only you knew where you could get some low price timber to fix it up.🤔
Beautiful country Michael, Road upkeep is most essential. Doesn't take long for water to ruin a road. If you knew someone with a sawmill you could whip that cabin right back into shape🤔
If only my sawmill wasn’t a couple hundred miles away from that place. There are some other options though, we’ll see what happens this summer when I am back there.
This brought back memories. I can't tell you how many hours I spent in my teens working the business end of a pick and shovel doing exactly that. We were fighting beavers out of our irrigation ditches and badgers in the fields constantly. The mess they could make of a road. Finally had to have the game department come and live trap the beaver, because the flooding was taking out acres of our wheat fields too. We also raised holstein feeder calves up for commercial milk cows. Some days I spent all day in the saddle moving those dim witted bovines. As a kid I thought all cows should be made into hamburgers. It was also my job to get up in the morning and milk the cows, there were usually six or so of them to milk and we hadn't a milking machine. As a teenage girl it was rather hard to always go off to school smelling like the barn, but hey those townies didn't have 2500 acres of space to play in like I did, and l didn't have much use for those limp handshake boys. 😊 The trap to catch beaver was a big one made out of a 50 gallon drum with the ends cut out. Heavy grating was welded and put on which was hinged. It had to be set at just the right height in the flowing ditch so the beaver could swim in but not drown once the trap was sprung. I saw one big male about 45 pounds and he was biting at that grate. No way he could bite through it tho. It was too thick, but man he sure tried. He was safely removed to a different part of the county. You've got some real nice lookin country there.
That sure is some pretty countryside. You got there Wilson.
Yeah it’s a pretty place, especially this time of the year.
Hey Michael 👋, looks like a beautiful place. I think the cabin would make a great project.
Yeah it would be a great project. Will have to see what the family wants to do with it.
What a beautiful property. Congratulations!
Here in New Hampshire our culverts regularly get plugged with leaves.
I got some old wire racks from a stove and bent the 3-4 inchs at one end into a L-shape.
After positioning them at the inlets I can clear them by just pulling the racks out and dumping the leaves, no digging involved.
FWIW
That property is beautiful. The cows do a great job mowing the steep hills.
Cows aren't that bad once you get to know them.
You should invite them to dinner sometime.
Yeah… maybe have a B-B-Que! 😂
We actually did have a BBQ, those cows were great.
Wow!! Gorgeous place !! Ashame bout those lazy cows though😂😂
10 minutes 25 sec what a beautiful sight brother. If we could picture heaven I believe that's it. Amazing man
Remember in Young Frankenstein how the horses would rear up when they heard the word "blucher"? (supposedly the German word for glue but that's not entirely true...let's not ruin a good story with facts though). Maybe you need to motivate your cows to help maintain the roads by walking by and saying "Freezer Beef" or "Rib-eye"....!
Just trying to be helpful,
yer pal Bird Dog Tom
That reminds me of what my grandpa used to say. He said if your chickens aren’t laying eggs, just take a double bit ax and leave it leaned up against their gate. They will get the message.
@@WilsonForestLands Speak softly and carry a sharp axe (save the cabin, too).
@birddogfarms “ Who’s brain is this?” “ Um Abby someone- Abby Normal”!!
Beautiful land, enjoy your videos of the property. Pacific NW is beautiful country.
They have some pretty funny voices, cows.
Thanks, Wilson.
I’m curious why someone would build the cabin on such a slope next to the stream. Seems like could have been built 15 or 20 feet away and been on flatter ground.
Those cows are very busy they have that place looking a million bucks.
Ah, yes! The old Pulaski! I used one of those on the fire line many years ago. What a beautiful place you are living in.
And those cows, by the way, are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing - gittin' fat and sassy! I believe that you interrupted their solitude.
Yeah yeah yeah, since I’m interrupting their solitude I might as well at least go the whole distance and blame them for things they aren’t responsible for. 😁
How do you guys keep the blackberrys from taking over? They are horrible up here.
Cows aren't freeloaders they're saving you from using a lawnmower
Those clouds are defective with the excessive leaks. Cows sure have a nice view!
Yeah they don’t make clouds like they used to.
Nice to see Angus w/ white faces. We raised hereferd crossed w/ Angus bull. Good animals.
I would think you would have a dog hanging out with you, protecting you from all those bellyaching cows.
I haven’t had a need for a dog, those cows are all talk, I mean all moo.
We are going to need a cabin deck replacement series! It would be awesome if the deck boards were extremely thick like old boardwalks on piers!
After getting a closer look at the cabin I think we need to do more work on the cabin before we get to the deck. When I am back there this summer we will take a closer look at it and decide if we want to do a series.
Hi Woody,
What part of Scotland did your family come from? because where you are looks just like where I am here in Scotlands west coast.Your family must have had a tough journey from here to the Pacific west coast of USA but looks like they got their reward👍👍👍👍😉
Actually we don’t know what part of Scotland. We only kind of have the idea that they came from Scotland. I would like to know more about their history but they were Wilsons of few words
I sure hope you renovate that cabin. be a shame to see it rot away and would make a great youtube series.
From the thumbnail I thought the cows were helping fix the road. Now if you needed grass cutting on the road, they are good at that … I miss having ours to keep the laneway trimmed. Also good at keeping saplings under control, they were the only weapon I’ve found to win over Manitoba Maples for instance. Autonomous, self propelled & fuelling!
That is one thing they do a good job of, keeping the grass cut. So maybe I will cut them a little slack.
Now I think you need to have a intervention with them there cow . And be straight forward with them.. remember beef brings a pretty good payday right now. And from the price of prime beef right now it would only take a couple of them to re-gravel that road. So be real stern with them and let them know you are watching to see what two😂😂😂
Yeah you are probably right. With the price of beef being high, I might have the advantage when it comes to cow negotiation.
What a place. Thanks for taking us along. Can we please get a walkthrough of the 1800's cabin? That place looks COOL! God bless ♥️🙏🏼
I probably won’t be back to that place until this summer. Maybe then I can do a walk through.
Really cool video making mate, I appreciate the effort this takes, I’m only like 30 seconds in but I had to leave a bit of positive feedback 🙌 your videos are really good in general and you share brilliant information, thank you for taking the time to do it bud.
Thank you, it’s good to know people are appreciating the videos.
Nice mammas and calves. Is that another pair of boots you are wearing? How many pairs do you own? Heh, heh.
Those were just my rubber muck boots. I think I have four pairs of boots that are still in working order.
Those are some gras moo-wers with an Integrated Fertilizing System.
Grass moo-wers, nicely done. 😂
wonderful,,
nutrient distribution is their favourite pass time. . great looking location. that cabin needs some work but should be saved.
I got a closer look at the cabin and it needs a whole lot of work. But it would be good to save it.
Pretty sure those cows are doing one other thing besides eating and mooing...they're "fertilizing" those pastures.
Thanks for posting, and thumbs up.
I suppose one could argue they are making beef too.
The key is under the door mat.😊
Or above the door or under the flower pot.
The cows will pay the price later!
are those your family cows or do you just have a grazing agreement won’t a farmer ?
A rancher in the area leases the pasture, they are all his.
What is that yellow color on the branches along where you're redirecting water flow?
The only yellow I am thinking of would be the yellowish orange color on the madrone trees. If that’s what you are talking about that is the color of the bark.
Oh and yes that is a very good looking cabin just needs some long over due tlc
After getting a closer look at it, it’s going to be a whole lot of TLC.
That sure is some pretty country!
Don't forget to hit the THUMBS up!
Simply breathtaking. GOD is magnificent!
While those cows are busy munching on grass all the time, they are making some great steaks. Cut them some slack. 🤣
Yeah but they’re not my cows so I don’t get to eat the steak.
Time to moooooove on
that's a decent sort of a ravine that creek is in!
Great video!
As a gold miner, my mind went to thinking about sampling the gravels in those culvert pipes. You’d never know, unless you look.
Beautiful property. Thanks for sharing.
Take care.
That area has no mining history, it’s believed to be the wrong geology. It would still be interesting to check though. On my property where I do most of my videos, I have thought about doing some sampling, if only I knew what I was doing. That place has more of a gold history.
@@WilsonForestLands I didn’t know what I was doing when I started. Lol. I still don’t know what I’m doing sometimes. lol.
All you need is a gold pan and shovel to get started!
I watch your channel to learn more on wood milling and forestry work. I have to do a lot of that every mining season. I’ll say thank you again for your videos and knowledge.
Take care.
I'll bet that the cows have been hanging out with the deer, the squirrels, and the bees. Oh I forgot about the bears.
With all those animals hanging out together, you know it means trouble.
@@WilsonForestLands right.
What a Gorgeous place.
Another vote to save the cabin
Video of the inside of that cabin please
I probably won’t be back to the ranch until this summer. Maybe then I can get a video of the inside.
Awesome looking Cabin!
Beautiful country Michael. Thank you for sharing.
Such a beautiful place You have !
Well done!
I kept a look out for Heidi to pop her head out!
Heidi took the week off. She’s probably there now doing her Heidi thing.
Thank you for showing this beautiful land appreciate it
Looks like the cabin could use some lumber from a certain mill we all know of..😉👍
Yeah the cabin could use some lumber but that certain mill is hundreds of miles away from it. We may have to go to some alternative ones.
@WilsonForestLands : Bring the mill to the cabin??
There is a lot of family involved with that ranch. First to see what they want to do. There is an LT10 on the place I could use. Maybe bring mine there if I get the mobile package for it.
Came here to watch the cows get fixed. Oh well. Staying for the cabin.
Good job
Luckiest cows on Mother Earth. Great video
So I’ve been making “water bars “ on my road. Cool name,I’ll start using it. I like that rock formation beyond the cattle. Has a Lord of the Rings look to it.
There are several big rocks that have various names there. Yeah that ranch has a lot of places on it that would be good for making movies.
Wow now that is a creek going by the road.
And the mooing was the cows pointing out that road and ditch maintenance is not in their job description. Chewing grass and getting plump is their entire job along with some "make" milk.
Road maintenance may not be in the cows job description. But I can try to encourage them to be overachievers and go above and beyond.
Oh it's worth restoring, less dealings with the county will always be cheaper.😊
Less dealings with the county, you are speaking my language.
Ya gotta share a Bigfoot story!!!
You might be right. Maybe I should tell my Bigfoot story one of these days
@@WilsonForestLands yes sir….!
If the cabin has any history for you It would be worth saving . If not it is easier to replace . Its in a beautiful location
Yeah if it wasn’t for the history of the cabin, it might be easier to replace.
Not only did the cows stand by and watch it happen but they contributed to the runoff... 😉
You make a good point.
Sure blame the beef burgers 😅
Might have to call this Wilson field lands .
That place has a lot of prairie but when I am back this summer I will probably show the forest part.
What state is this property located in?
my guess: Oregon
I try to refresh the water bars before a big rain.
That would require forethought and planning. 😁
Same here but the guy who usually maintains this road died last fall.
@@bwillan I only said I try not that I do
@@WilsonForestLands I only said I try not that I do
I see multiple videos on the cabin rescue restoration, you've got plenty of work Michael.
We’ll see if I feel like doing any work on the cabin when I am back there this summer.
