- Stephen Sondheim came to The Greene Space on Valentine's Day for an hour of conversation and music with WQXR's Elliott Forrest, along with award-winning director John Doyle and the cast of the current "Passion" revival at the Classic Stage Company.
Sondheim wrote the 1994 Tony Award-winning musical with James Lapine. Broadway stars Melissa Errico, Judy Kuhn and Ryan Silverman and musical director Rob Berman performed selections from "Passion".
For me, Passion contains the most emotive lyrics of all of Sondheim's musicals.
Judy Kuhn is the best Fosca I've ever seen and maybe one of the most underrated performers on Broadway. She's a miracle. She deserved the Tony for Fun Home.
indeed she did.
Donna Murphy.
The magnificent Judy Kuhn nails this gorgeous Sondeim song of passion and unfulfilled longing and love. I wish I had seen this limited run.
So beautiful!! Judy Kuhn and Sondheim is such a perfect match! Her voice brings me to tears!!
me too!
That is astonishing. Perfect in its purity. She has to be the definitive Fosca and it's Sondheim at his most perfectly poetic. So moving. Thanks for posting
Great voice. Very honest.
Stephen Schwartz once said that Judy Kuhn has a talent for making lyrics just make sense. That talent is what lets her sing 'A Heart Full Of Love' and, well, this.
Mezzo role - she seems to have transitioned more into her lower range than her high range as of the past decade, though her high range is still quite phenomenal.
WOW. Listen to those gorgeous clashes of piano chords against the voice of the singer.
Perfection!
ditto
Judy Kuhn is a national treasure!
I know of few songs with releases as magnificent as @ 1:40, nor as well-performed here by the incomparable Ms Kuhn. Brava!
This is WHY I love UA-cam
goosebumps
Wow I love discovering songs like this.. absolutely beautiful
just wonderful... saw Judy and Ryan Silverman at Classic Stage, they were heartbreaking... thank you for posting
She and Ryan Silverman were perfect in this production, and the spare staging was ideal for it--I don't always enjoy John Doyle stagings, but this one was so emotional.
Wonderful, but l can never forget Maria Friedman in the original London production, opposite Michael Ball.
Judy has a huge range. I mean Cosette is a soprano role, and this is what mezzo/alto?
Do you have I read?
Pocahontas sounds sad :(
too safe
I saw the original cast and the energy was different based on videos that I have seen of the revival . Ms Kuhn has a beautiful voice but her interpretation doesn’t contain the darkness that Donna Murphy used in her characterization of Fosca. The character is exhausted by her own suffering and loneliness but she is bitter too and angry. I like the darker version. This one is just mournful. With respect.
I so agree with everything you mentioned.
Saw both. I guess you should see a full performance, not clips.
