4:43 Better than *Before*
Apple Pencil 2. Specify. You’re in the top 3 for “Apple Pencil 1” videos with multiple search term suffixes.
Seems spot on to me, Mod could be done on a first gen pencil
That really turned out nice! I have been thinking of getting a drawing tablet myself.
I just saw this now and wow, I wish Apple made the options to have these types of pencil designs and variety. I'd like mine to be like in a gradient colored one.
Well done!
Primer or sealer is your friend when painting plastics, as some paints can react with the plastic.
I used the cotton style tape used for cable looms, also has a nice touch :)
ive done body work for the last 20 yrs. a few tips for fisheyes. fish eyes are all about surface tension . first step to break that tension is prep the surface. for the pencil i would use a 2000 grit sandpaper and skiff the surface. this will break the surface tension but not allow metal cast to build up in sand scratches. second. ditch the wax and grease remover. sometimes it makes things worse, by basically seasoning and spreading any grease out that may be on the surface, but not removing it from surface. Nason, and dupont make a product called final clean. it’s a surface cleaner and prep that really cleans and breaks that surface tension of any oils that are on the surface. just a few tips. hope it helps
Great tips! Thanks
Pro tip thanks for sharing, much appreciated!
no problem. if you have any other refinishing questions, please feel free to ask. I do bodywork on semi trucks mainly , but have done cars, busses, rv’s, motorcycles, guitars, helmets, metal furniture, all kinds of things. airbrush and specialty paints. i’d be happy to pass along any tips I can.
@@eross21 Hi Eric. Would you mind giving the rest of the steps you would have taken to finish? Also, would you have sand between coats? Heard of rit dye? Would that have been a better choice? Thank you.
@@bassstudent4life sure if i was going to paint this pen. I would sand with 2000grit paper. i would wipe it down with a surface cleaner like Dupont’s final clean. it neutralizes the surface so that no oils or plastic mold release agents can escape. I would spray a lite first coat with an intercoat clear. most car paint manufactures have it in their line. this will act
as almost a clear primer and give the color something to hang on too. then I would use a dye based candy paint mixed with the intercoat clear. i’d do several light coats of that, untill desired color is achieved. then simply finish it up with a clear coat.
Nice video! Cool the logo still shows through. Never heard of a clear primer before. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thank you! Cheers!
Really diggin the channel man.
Thanks! I appreciate your support and comment. Feel free to share with the world on social media and let them know how much you're digging it.
Awesome
Coolest thing I've seen about the Apple Pencil!!!
Eric views designing something as an opportunity to spend time messing around with materials, colors, and processes for his own pleasure, rather than for the purpose of actually creating something appealing to others. A great analogy is a studio musician that loves playing so much he can’t help but blandly shred a million 1/8 notes as fast as possible every time he picks up a guitar; not realizing that other people aren’t having as much fun listening to it as he is playing it. Which of course is the reason studio musicians have to be told what to play by the artist (designer, in this analogy). I had this guys design class in college. He walked in with one of those pre-faded “Crush” pop shirts you see at Kohls, like the “I’m a pepper” ones that lame kids in junior high wear. He was also wearing a goofy Indiana Jones hat, cargo shorts with tall white socks and some weird north face hiking shoes. On top of all that, the guy pulls out some ugly android phone… This is design school mind you. So when I had to make a presentation in my english class about an issue in the field I was majoring in, I chose “what is good design” and I filled my slides with pictures of Eric’s products as examples of what good design is not. The whole class had a good laugh. Eric, you suck.
Lol.....good read. Quite a functional upgrade this design experiment was and still is. Actually messing around as a designer is one of the best things about being a designer and one of the best ways to learn.
Looks like my go to that I can't get hold of hardly ever these days 😂 miss bic fine being everywhere.
How has it held up?
I really love it!
I’m going to set up a little workshop in my new house. And that corner with forced ventilation for painting would be perfect to paint my 3D prints and my Apple Pencil.
My fear is that I don’t have the professional equipment and tools for painting and I don’t know if with canned sprays I can achieve the same outcome... I would look for similar objects to test it before “playing” with the certainly-non-cheap Apple Pencil.
Apart from that, instead of painting the nib/tip I’m going to buy a made of black rubber/plastic. Let’s see how it goes.
Thanks for your video!!
Good luck
Oo this is fun. I’m the same way, I don’t mind the smooth glossiness of the iPad. That pencil is sharp.
Thanks for the comment and support! Have a great day.
I love the idea of painting the body with orange. And looks much more expensive now. But I'm not sure with sanding or reducing the dimensions of the nib, it feels like you just reduced the life span of the nib. But still, very great end result love it. And i'm considering now to paint may Gen 1 pen for my ipad 9 too. Hahahha
I solved the gripping problem in the first apple pencil with the rubber part from an old Pilot mechanical pencil. Fits perfectly and works like a charm.
I am not willing to add thickness to the pencil, so I opted not to do that rout.
@@EricStrebel yea especially since it interferes with charging
@@EricStrebel do you notice the visible offset? Any idea what size you got it down to? I read that if you go to fine the visible offset can't get plenty. Annoying, any insights? I was looking at pen tips and they sell some metal tipped deal that just looks like you'll notice the offset and it'll wear through any matte protector rather quickly, maybe there's a sweet spot with the metal tip and a rough tooth screen protector? Thanks
No
Sand paper 50 … works wonders
ok that was not what i was looking for :D but great Mod anyway.
I dont like the thick tip of the apple pencil... i used to draw with wacom pens and also Samsung SPens and they have a thin, even slightly flexible tip which feels fantastic. I dont know why Apple isnt offering a set of different tips for Artists.
nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Instant subbed!
Thank god there are more options with emr styli like the lamy one that i have. Really nice paintjob though, have to get into that stuff in a while. Could probably fix the gripping problem with a cheap long air balloon wrapped around the thing... If asthetics arent a problem.
Julian Weiser Yes, the balloon trick could work as well
Hey Eric, revisiting this video as I want to do this myself. Wanted to know if this finish has held up over the years. Thanks!
Yeah, held up well, in hind sight I would lightly sand the pencil first to increase adhesion and make coating easier
@@EricStrebel Thanks so much mate! Working on it tonight 😎
I wish apple made the tip sharper like yours from scratch.
I''m gonna try this If I get one D: the sanding part. I just want a sharper nib
Did u have any issues with the tap function on the pencil after this? Normally you tap the pencil to change to the eraser
Why didn't you use the turntable when applying the clear coat?
Good question Tony! While the turn table rotates, it only does so in one axis. I need more flexibility when spraying paint for getting into the underside of areas, such as the tip. Plus the gun is a physical thing and maneuvering in the spray booth can be tricky as the space is confined and limited. Also, if I get a run, I could potentially save the part by rotating it. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for the comment and support, very much appreciated 😊👍
Metal cast paint is best when used with the aluminum base coat.
See my metal cast video link in the video, top Right
Eric! You should take a look at the paper texture screen cover. The UA-camr, William Paterson, uses it as his staple of IPad setup. Hope this adds value to you!
Thanks
I want 1 too.. my apple pencil 1 is sooo slippery.. great idea eric..
Id recommend buying a cover for it
Did you happen to try a piece of thin heat shrink tubing to assist grip? Would that affect the charging at all?
Nope, have not
I have tried and it works well I used shrink wrap tubing that i had left over from doing my PC cables...just watch the tip when applying the heat as the apple pencil plastic is thin and melts very quickly.
Unfortunately I found that out the hard way, didn't realize it until I took off the sleeve and it slightly shrunk the barrel near the tip so the gap between the barrel and tip is now bigger and uneven. My fault for letting the heatgun get too close and starting at the non-tip end first so by the time it got to the tip end it was too hot.
Wow.
Thanks!
I love that stand/drawing board. Where’d you get that?
He asked, knowing you probably just made it yourself
That is what im thinking. I love that case also.
Yup, made, there's a video for it
Is there a give away for that pencil?
Hi. I´m fascinated with Rurlyok's guitar version of the Mandalorian intro. I've tried to find it in the link below to no avail. I´m sorry to bother you with this. Thank you!
Made special for me, I don't think it's on his band camp page
Man, I've been browsing through several electric guitar versions on YT and your friend's the best of all.
You can actually buy black tips for the apple pencil. Check those out it'll look much better than the sharpie
sharpies always look kind of purple when the light hits them you should of used a different marker for it IMO
Suggestions....
rad
Where can I find an iPad case just like yours?
Dunno, you will have to make one
Eric Strebel I guess so, even though that case of yours is really awesome, quite unique
Thanks!
4:43 "beforE" ......whoops! Don't worry, I suck at spilling two. :)
Lol, yeah, I know
I like the orange. At the end when you place the pencil on the iPad, it appears that the tip is white again on the end. So did the black transfer to the screen or just wear off, and is it worth coloring if it just comes off anyway? Metallic colors would look cool too. Now get Apple to do this please. Lol. 👍🏼
Some discoloration has occurred over time, it's like a dark grey at this point
Eric Strebel “...at this point” No pun intended. 🤪
😄👍
there are black tips available for the apple pencil. check those out if you want
I saw the Apple logo on the pencil at the end. Did you recreate it or somehow mask it?
every spray he used was transparent, so it shines through
Correct, translucent
The way you paint isnt really good. Try to wait longer between coats. Runs should be avoided and if done properly shouldn't happen in the first place.
Great video
if we're to design mine the pencil would be pink and tip is black or vice versa
Acetone? That was a big gamble...I'd have used cleaning gasoline.
Also use a" paperlike" screen protector search it online it's a company that gives textured feel when u write
Ammonia is good for degreasing to
I had the same fish eye problem when using benzene
Before*
Can i sand it
Try
MANDO MUSIC
"befor" lol
Dude… you must be bored. lol. still cool to see tho.
maybe you should offer to color peoples pencils for a fee… 50-100 dollars depending on monotone, dual tones, gradients, etc, etc… if you’re using quality paints and clear coating them the paint job should definitely last
Yo this is gold. A gentleman and scholar! I’d send another “pencil 2”, to see you mock up your favorite sketch ball point. Sub earned. No *half-as*!! Keep it full blast 🦾🦾🦾🦾🦾
