That counting thing is called teentaal…. It provide rhythmic structure…. It consist of 16 beats with 4/4/4/4/ pattern and 4 division. In one set there are 3 claps and 1 gap.

we just remember by the flow of notes and may be practicing for like 50-70 times.. thats how ppl sing notes in carnatic.. we write down once and read thru for first 10 times, then u knw the flow

There is a state in India called Mizoram, I am crazy about their music. It sounds like 1970s USA. My top 5 Mizo songs are the following:
1) Kimkima: I zun ngaih lunglen Vangin (2019)

There's a popular saying these days someone mentioned earlier that India is not for beginners. Damn true guys. I am not even musically gifted, when I sing people laugh, I laugh on myself but even I know the Raag, Taal, etc. The music teachers teach everything, every basics of different instruments and singing and music and dancing to everybody in schools upto 8th class. And in musically gifted families children take professional classical training by their family members.
Also, someone mentioned Teen Taal above. I have some doubts that is Teen Taal. Could be some other kind of taal. There are several. I might be wrong but that doesn't sound like Teen Taal. I have learned Teen Taal in very detail while I was training in Kathak. Again, I might be wrong so please don't come at me in comments 😂😂
The music teacher here is Ananjan Chakraborty from West Bengal (Brother of Kaushiki Chakraborty)
This is a modern version of a singing class. Earlier days they would be sitting crossed legged before the guru for hours on end, practice, reciting, singing the notes. With no conveniences of today to record the singing lesson and practice, one remembered it.
You may be surprised that even legends like Lata Mangeshikar and Soonu Nigam would consider it normal to do these voice exercises before a master as if fine tuning their vocal cords.

The second song is from the Berkelee Indian Ensemble’s 5 peace band Ft “Shankar Mahadevan”. This was performed earlier by the legendary Shakti band. One of the most vocally beautiful songs!!

What are the most used 'taals ' in Indian music?
Search for the classical sangeet history then u can start from 'that ' , then ' raga', ' taal ' , 'rhythm' this will continue many things... When we learn music we also useto learn all these by reading books... We giving examination one written where questions given like " What is taal ? Like that and one have to write that and pass that along with singing... Or dancing ... There are boards which conducts examinations based on these marks are given... One can choose... There are many music school where u have to learn like this... And there are many teachers who only teach music... No written exam... So one can choose... Even teachers give the option u want to give exam or not . . ... So when we start learning music we have to learn all these along with the singing... If u want to learn indian classical music u need to learn the basics that, taal, sargam, raag , taan etc... And the classical music also can be considered as the basic for all the indian music ... So when a child start learning the teacher always start from classical for 1, 2 years atleast only sargam and some small content of raaga that is the first step... U give exam or not that doesn't matter... But one have to learn this first to sing.
the first musical piece you reacted to is what i used to perform with as I have trained in Bharatnatyama for 3 years which is one of the classical dance form from South India. It is as difficult to dance on it as it is to sing it .
I used to learn Kathak (a classical dance) when I was young and we also did the counting and clapping.
I came in late in the season and didn't understand what we were doing 😅didn't dare to ask!

As an Indian I can say that this is easy for me because I studied this theb I was in 5th grade , every week one class is for classical music and there was one time then I was in 4th grade were I was able to participate in a group song competition and it was great ☺️
Indian classical music is so intense we play on a different levels than the whole world , try listening to different classicals of different regions of Indian and start with maithili

They are singing combination of sa re Ga ma pa da ni sa. In Latin Do ra me fa so la se do. same thing. That's what Indian classical is all about. It takes years of training to get to do this. Same thing with bharathanatiyam. It's also classical. Takes years of practice. No easy feat.
They start learning at a very young age of 5 yrs.You can’t compare Indian singing to your pop performances.Once youve trained in classical you can sing any genre easily.
