Shilkret's 1929 recording is vastly superior. This live version is a bit rushed and the trumpet (which sounds like a cornet) is way too recessed. But it is great to hear any Shilkret performance (with what in some places sound like authentic can horns, such as were used in the original RCA recording) since details are here that no one else ever seems to have noticed. Toscanini must have taken cues for his wonderful 1945 recording from Shilkret. It retains more ties to the jazz age than almost all others made since.
The studio recording with the RCA Victor Symphony is better overall, but this is fascinating to see how consistent the style is.
