This sounds so much like the Templar Knights story. The Templar Knights were originated by Hugh Payne, born in 1070 & died in the Israel 1136. They had started the "first" bank and the King of France had borrowed so much money and did not know how to pay it back. He had the knights murdered, some by torture before they died of hanging or being burned. By killing the knights he did not have to pay back what he owed. The knights were there to protect the travelers as I understand and were paid for their services. Is this history repeating itself?

Ancient Rabbinical families acted as banks throughout the trading world for a couple thousand of years.
When you said the king burned them or hanged them, you didn't need to add that by killing them he didn't need to pay them back.
