Loving to see more 2002 attention, my dad has owned a few of these when I was growing up, thus I absolutely love them

I’ve always admired the looks of the 2002. Thanks for reviewing this car and a big thanks to the car’s owner for allowing you to do so.

A 1967 BMW 1600-2 was my first ‘real’ car. $2750 MSRP. 96 cu. In., 96 HP. All of us BMW 1600 drivers wanted to trade up to the 2002tii, but it was rare even at the time. Also, BMWs from this period rusted with real enthusiasm, haha.

Leather driving gloves and thin steering wheels were meant foe each other.

Unassisted brakes? Thought '02s had front discs and a booster.

Would love to see the comparison between BMW 2002 and the Alfa Romeo 1750/2000 GTV. They are both small Coupe(technically two doors sedan) from 1970.

My first car was a 1972 BMW 2002tii in Inka Orange I bought in 1977 my junior year of high school and drove it until 1981. Great to see this video and stunning example of a truly great car. My next car was a 1970 BMW 2800cs, See if you can find one of those to drive. A car that I thought was as fun to drive as the 2002tii was a 1981 Mazda RX-7. Volkswagon brought the Beetle back, and I have always wanted BMW to bring the 2002 back.

I've owned an 1802 in the past in the same colour Inka Orange. Even with 90 DIN PS it was a great car.

Very cool car; I have always liked the 2002. If you’re ever in the Charlotte, NC area and want a couple of cars to try, I’ve got a stock 2008 BMW 135i (N54, 6spd) and a 1988 5.0L Thunderbird that’s been modified to be a mountain carver/pure driver’s car.

That Tii is pretty close to a perfect period sample, but with minor alterations like lowering springs, LSD, and OD 5spd. The LSD is likely a 3.91, hence the speedo being way off. They weren't very accurate from the factory and seemed to read 6-10% high in my experience.
As a Z and '02 owner they're complimentary vintage cars. The Z is a better platform to modify for spirited canyon driving and the '02 is a better resto-mod daily/non-performance experience as long as you can deal with the noise(or travel mostly below 50mph).

Y’know the clean and simple sweep of the 2002tii dash reminds me of my new Civic. How odd.

I'm not a Beemer guy, but I've always liked the 2002.

    The car that made BMW.
If only BMW would make a modern version instead of the giganto-mobile-blobs being made today.
The best is the Porsche 914, NOT the 911 or 912!
    Well Done.

So, this or a Datsun 240 for $30k? As a fair-weather daily driver?

Having driven both my 2002 and my brother’s 240Z way back when, I’d definitely go with the 2002. Pushed hard through the twisties the 2002 lets go evenly to the side whereas the Z had a nasty tendency to immediately swap ends.

@@fsquared64 good info, thanks! BMW has been on the weight distribution plan since forever.

This could be my second car. Same model, same color, same year, same version but a different steering wheel, harder suspension, sun roof, and orginal shorter gear lever.

These cars need to be redesigned in the same way the MIns were redesigned after the Bourne movies. If they used the BMS 2002 in the movie, the BMW would have been given the same accolades the Mini has received from BMW. Not fair. The 2002 was a better car.
