- What is pneumothorax? It is when there is air in the chest - more specifically air in the space between the lungs and chest wall - called the pleural space.

Sadly Right now while im writing this comment, I'm in hospital with pneumothorax and it's really painful.. Of course I had big one.. Hopefully ill be okayy
Keeping you in our thoughts 🙏🏼
Hey hope you get better I think I'm having symptoms
I had been throu it when i was 15 i had the draining pperation it was easy and fine and nothing harmful i can feel you it may be painful and annoying at first but you will get better really i also after 8 years i have the symptoms it sucks but just takin antis will help mAy God bless you
@@Firasgames619 hi..how many times u got this pneumothorax ?and how do u recover from it?
@@mylifeisupsetting it was once when i was 15 i had it, they took me to hospital and they did a surgery it's like opening a whole in your chest and put a tube to drain the air form there like it took a week living with it it was kinda painful absolutly 2 days but then it got used to it after a week i got recovered qnd thry gave me rest for 2 weeks in home and rest from all sports etc after one year i started to feel the same pain but it was just the beginning of it so i went to doctor immediately and i got recovered buy takin some medicines and after 7 years i am havin now same problem i don't know how it happened again but i went to doctor and he told me i am okay and he gave me medecines to heal my pain this is all my story about it
Great information straight to the point 👏🏾
This happened to me a few weeks ago. Spontaneous pneumothorax. Woke up fine then 10 minutes later i was laid on the sofa struggling to breath with intense check pain. Ended up in hospital for 3 days with a chest drain in.
And to top it off i was in the house by myself so had to phone the ambulance for myself while trying to breath.
Me too mate just like you sept I was coughing from chest infection. Feeling better now but worried it could happen again. Be well
@@jovitaach17 i got told i had a 20% chance of it happening again and then i might have to have an operation to close the inner hole. but is wasn't to cut a chunk off. Just cover the injured bit with something to stop it happening again.
This happened to me about 15 days ago, I’m still currently in the hospital and they just removed my chest drain my hole in my lung took so long to heal and all the air was trapped in my body for days. Long process and 3days you got it lucky. The problem now is it can happens to us anytime again.
i have it right now. im gg to an a&e rn
Happend to me yesterday
Many thanks for this. It's important to bear in mind the complications of chest drain insertion- those being pain, incorrect placement or recurrence of the pneumothorax.
thank you so much. Be blessed, best medical channel ever!!!!!!
Thank you Osmosis
You are a life saver bro❤️❤️
Best video ever explaining it all in six minutes.
Thank you! We appreciate the feedback! ❤️
Thank you ❤️
Good British English accent. Clear explanation.
I had a spontaneous primary pneumothorax and I laughed when the doctor told me it typically happens to tall white males that do something that involves holding their breather… I’m a 23yr 6’ white male saxophonist 😅🙃
Thank you❤
Wow, thanks you!
exactly the case i had earlier together with NRM, bipap management
That was amazing. Really appreciated.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank u osmosis
Thank you, this was really informative!
Most welcome, Stijn! 🙏🏼 ❤️ 😊
The first time i had one (a spontaneus p.t) was painful, it felt like being stabed in the chest and lost breath, all of sudden. Didn't thought it was serious so i spent like 4 months like that, with shortness of breath, cough and some pain in chest and my right arm (thus i imagined it was some kind of muscular injury) until i got a x-ray and doctors found it.
Last year got another one, same lung, now i just woke up with shortness of breath and chest/arm pain. This time went straight to the hospital. Got a chest tube inserted for a week 'till it dissapeared. Doctors haven't figured out why it happened.
Are you a smoker?
i have had two episodes of spontaneous pneumothorax
1rst one on the left lung in 2012 got that treated with chest tube insertion
2nd one on right lung in 2015 this time had to undergo surgery (Bullectomy)
and now again iam having chest pain its so frustrating
@@moistkitty8081 it’s pretty annoying the doctors said that “after surgery it won’t happen again”. I had 3 pneumothorax after my first one. It gets better with age, but the pains are annoying. I am greatful for the little improvements from my lungs now that nothing has happened often, just tiny pains.
Do you have a family history of spontaneous pneumothorax? My family has a genetic condition (albeit an extremely rare one) called Birt Hogg Dubé syndrome. One of the main symptoms is lung cysts which can burst and cause lung collapses.
Thanks for making this simple. Gives me an understanding of the basics so I can build a foundation to understanding the physiology of chest tubes.
We're glad this video helped, Nelly! 😊
Thanks for your classes.
Glad you like them!
Thanks!
There's a hypothesis that the blebs form from mechanical friction with the most prominent rib. The reason thin men are more prone then is because the space between the ribs is less padded, so the ribs stand out more prominently.
Also, in tall people the ribs are farther apart
Amazingly simple thank you for such qualitative videos
Always our pleasure! ❤️
Why do I have unbearable pain on the opposite side of my collapsed lung? It's been collapsed for a month but went unknown until today when the ER doc was reviewing my recent xrays.
Excellent! Thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
One of the best explanation
Glad you liked it, Khasim! 🥰
This was really informative ❤
Glad to help! 😊
Thanks ♥️♥️👏
Thanks

Im trying so hard to understand pneumothorax after having it 2 times, i underwent surgery a few weeks ago and was released from hospital last week.
I had 2 tubes connected for 17 days, and when they took them out after a few days of no leakage, it was only partially successful because the tubes had been there for so long that on a painscale of 1-10, it was way above 10, and not a 4 as the doctor said. I didnt get any painkillers or anything else, i just had to endure. And so air got trapped back in because the pain after the first tube being taken out was unreal, and i was sent home the day after with 6.5cm of air outside my lung, but after xray 3 days ago it was down to 4cm. Now im hoping the next xray in almost 2 weeks will be gone. But they didnt say carbondioxide, they just said air. Ive learned more on youtube than any doctor or nurse has ever told me.
Thanks for sharing, Eric! We hope that our video was able to help. 🙏🏼
@@osmosis It definitely was. I hope sometime in the future they will find more causes as to what can cause a pneumothorax to happen. Both times ive had it happen to me, my body was either sleeping in a weird position, or stretched in a twisted angle.
@@EricTheBroBean The cause is injury to the visceral pleura.
@@ruggerogabbrielli6831 Thats not a cause, thats a result.
@@EricTheBroBean Nope. The air you breath flows into your lungs, not in your pleural space. Only in case your visceral pleura is damaged air can flow in the pleural space, causing a spontaneous pneumothorax.
I have a collapsed right middle lobe at the moment and waiting for the hospital to figure out a plan.. needless to say it feels like agony, I am out of breath and weak.
Marvelous!
You are the best ❤️
Thank you! 😊
I was sat at my desk two days ago eating some crackers when I got hit with spontaneous pneumothorax. Thought it was a heart issue but glad it wasn't. Going in for a second check-up tomorrow to see if I need treatment or not :(
How are you feeling now?
@@mario-ly9mk totally forgot I commented here, but at the time the doctor had me hospitalized for 2 weeks while they helped my collapsed lung re expand with a tube inserted into my chest. It hurt a little to cough and breathe at times
A year later I’m all good now :) nothing has happened since, I’ve been able to go running and lift weights without any issues. It can be a bit scary if it happens to you but after the chest tube insertion it’s mainly just laying down in a bed watching UA-cam till your lungs get it together; the doctors were all very kind
Fantastic
Outstanding explanation best wishes from Uruguay

Thanks guys ❤

Thanks for the feedback, Pane! 🙏🏼
On my 5th one today was so bad‼️
So ok now I understand it's the tension pneumothorax I am suffering
So helpful ❤ your accent remind me of Enola holmes
Glad to help, Ola! 🙌🏼
U R the best ❤❤❤❤
Thanks, Mai! 😊
Can you clarify this for me please; the direction of shift of the trachea, is it different from spontaneous and tension pneumothorax
In Spontaneous there is not a shift in the trachea. The trachea shifts only in tension pneumothorax.
So every tension pneumothorax is a traumatic pneumothorax, right?
Only a few minutes! 😢 BUT I'M A MAN! A WARRIOR!!!
Won't the percussion be tympanic ?
I got stab in the right lung a few weeks ago, I just have a lot of questions how this is going to change my life ??
Please make a vedio on Amyloidosis
I am experiencing exactly like knuckle cracking sound of fingers in my chest for atleast once in an hour and I feel uncomfortable if I don't let that sound out of my chest by applying some sort of pressure on chest on my own, then I feel comfortable for a while
What might be the cause guys?,anyone please🙏

can a spontaneous one with more severe symptoms go away on its own? I was having shortness of breath and couldn't get a deep breath without great effort, back and shoulder pain, sharp stabbing pains in the left of my chest like right under my breast, and lightheadedness. I kept yawning but it felt more like suffocating. It finally started going away after almost a week.
also, not looking for a diagnosis, just wondering if it's possible. I might bring this up next time I see my dr
Hey, So i am having these exact symptoms but on the right side of my chest, could you let me know how did it go for you ?
@@H.2k64 I never did anything about it but the problem hasn't happened since, as far as I remember, at least not to that severity. I don't know what the issue was, sorry
yes it can i had a cyst that burst and caused my left lung to collapse and it healed entirely on its own after 4 months of rest (bed ridden)
I was in hospital for a week with a spontaneous pneumothorax ( my lung collapsed ) and was looked exactly how the lung in this video was )I’ve now been out of hospital for nearly three weeks and haven’t felt the same since I still feel like I can’t breath 100% feel like my heart is constantly beating faster than it should and pain in my shoulders and a tight chest I had a chest tube inserted does this get better will I feel normal again ?
I am experiencing this too. How are you feeling now?
I'm recovering from this now. Procedure this morning. Right side collapsed and mostly asymptomatic.
If I lost a lot of weight over the last year, could that affect my chances of getting it?
yes losing a lot of weight seems to be one of the main reasons.
@@montismoments-jt3cq turns out it was likely because of cysts or ruptured cysts on the lungs. Unlikely weight related. I had a complex situation.
i just got this today... am i in danger?
Can overused and misused Bipap Machine cause lungs to collapse❓Can overused Bipap Machine cause Tension Pneumothorax❓What about these Iatrogenic induced and concealed Tension Pneumothorax❓ What about Excessive Fluid Overloaded that infiltrated Mom's lungs. These are extremely painful!
Have you ever gotten this I'm literally so worried cause I'm feeling air in my lungs rn
@@nathiorellana please dont worry at first its painful like u can feel sharp pain or u cant exhale 100% you just need to see a doctor mostly it can be cured without any draining surgery with medicines i hope hou will get better
No shit
@@nathiorellana Hiya, don’t worry, that’s the health anxiety convincing you that something is wrong. ❤️ It’s normal to feel air in your lungs, that is how you breathe!
You will definitely know if you have this condition as it will be so extremely painful that it will feel like someone is stabbing you and you cannot walk.
I think I had a fricking spontaneous one a couple weeks ago. I'm in the process of getting diagnosed with marfan syndrome and my cardiologist really thinks I have it( I have pretty much all the symptoms, but a good heart. And some enzyme of mine is way too high, which is often a sign of mfs apparently). I have a 4+ haller index for pectus excavatum. one day I suddenly was having a significantly harder time breathing and kept feeling sharp stabbing pains every day for like a week, and one night I almost passed out from lack of oxygen while doing absolutely nothing but sitting down trying to catch my breath. I kept getting told, "it could just be gas in your chest" by my parents and the lady who did my echocardiogram, but this is literally gas in the chest and I was having the hard time breathing, in addition to pain in my back and shoulders. Holy frick, wow, this could have been it :0
How are you feeling now?
I have Marfan syndrome
Can spontaneous pneumothorax recur after surgery?
Yes had 3
