- Work trains are a necessary part of railroad maintenance. They carry important vehicles and materials to locations of track work along the railroad. In this video, we will take a look at several different work trains and vehicles - everything from wrecking cranes to inspection trains. We'll finish off with a look at an actual steam powered crane at the Nevada Northern Railway Museum. All aboard!

Worked the railway for 10 years and never regretted a day. Love that job and always will
Great compilation of working on the RAILROAD! That Nevada & Northern steam crane was AWESOME!
I can't tell you how excited seeing that old crane still working made me. I wish they painted them something other than flat black though.
Tougher to see graffiti with the flat black.
Just loved seeing a wrecking crane in action and steam powered to boot. Terrific shots of mechanics
Thank you very much, Michael. That crane is one of the most interesting steam powered machines I've seen.
Wow that crane is cool!
Thanks! The crane is located at the Nevada Northern Railway and Museum in Ely, Nevada.

Yea that NNRy Wrecking Crane is amazing! So is the entire railroad!
@@janbvh2579😂q😊
The work train on the Keddie Wye was rather impressive and long plus the Nevada Northern steam crane was cool. Thanks for posting Thumbs up!
You're welcome, Mark! Thanks for commenting and watching!
Great video and quite interesting. Something to be said for the old equipment such as that steam powered crane! Thanks for sharing it. :)
Happy to share! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Absoluty love the steam engine part!
I've seen the Metra locomotive crane several times, got a picture of it running through Rondout while waiting for the 4449 to come through.
The ol' boys having a field day with that steam hook is great......
My favorite is Ely the steam powered Crane. I've not been there in over a decade. Lots to see and enjoy. I loved the tour from a 94 year old Railway retired worker he was a Steam to Desiel man . I also loved the Bakery accross the road from the old Station. I took my Sister in Mapleton Utah. A Apple Pie and Strawberry Rubarb pie. I called her from Ely and said put Supper on the Table I'm bringing Desert. 😁
Mike you’re like the Steven Spielberg of rail fan vids👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾extremely great work once again!
Thanks very much, Kenneth!
Loved the wrecking crane at the Nevada Northern
Yeah, that thing is really cool! You should go out there for their photo weekend some time.
CoasterFan2105 will definitely try to do it when they have it again
Great video of the MOW work trains, regular trains couldnt run without them
Wide World of Trains once again I find you
Indeed they could not!
Thank you! You are absolutely right about that. Maintenance of way is essential in order to keep the RR running smoothly.
Wide World of Trains 🚂
0:42 first time I've heard a K5LA on an end-cab swithcer!
1:13 nice to see an ex-Conrail and Ex- southern hoppers on this short train!
2:35 wheel-carry cars like this can also be found on normal mixed freight trains!
3:57 nice catch of that car with a pantogrpah on it (probably a rebuilt metroliner!)
4:20 a speeder carries his son back to the yard!
4:25 nice catch of that Penn Central engine goign over the Northeast Corridor (it might actually be the Keystone Corridor!)
The Nevada northern steam crane or the long UP one was my favorite!
MrBnsftrain Yeah, It also matched with the NS Paint.
Thanks for the comment! The PC unit was in Woodbourne, PA.
Love the Ol Steam Crane amazing.
Thanks!
Thanks Mike.
A very nice compilation. Great shots of the Keddie Wye and NF Willamatte.
Thank you very much, Darryl.
I really liked seeing the Union Pacific work train on the Keddie Wye. I also liked the Nevada Northern RR steam crane and boom/tool car.
Great Modelling Ideas...the long articulated hopper ballast train, andthe humongous work train on the Trestle...it never ends!!!
My bro always loves these :D
Thank you for sharing!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Operating that steam crane must have been some serious back breaking working for the men who did it. Being crammed into such a small space with a steam engine, im sure the heat was overwhelming at times.
Yeah, I'd imagine it was not an easy job. A lot of careful, slow work.
The heat would be welcomed in the cold months.
Not just nice but the best train videos......God speed.......
Thank you very much, you too.
That breakdown train is cool 🚂
Great video, Thanks. Certainly beats endless views of passenger trains. :)
Very welcome! Thanks for watching :)
👍Great video! Thank you. That steam monster is alive! *
Nice sharp vivid video editing and work. Excellent sound. Thanks for posting
0:40 Cool switcher locomotive
Cool post, seeing a steam crane is a real treat!!
Cran operator was great. He put that car right back on track.

Cool video, thanks for posting.
No problem, thanks for the comment!
What an interesting consist starting at 4:55 so many cool machines!
Yes, that one caught me by surprise! A very interesting train.
That steam powered crane was cool! I have seen one at tvrm but not working. Nice video!
Thank you! I think the one at the Nevada Northern is either the only or one of the only steam powered railroad cranes in operation.
That Crane was awesome. And I see you were in Rochelle Illinois
Yes, I was! Thanks for the comment!
Excellent video! Thank you!
Thank you very much, Donald! Glad you liked it.
This was a great video on MOW

Thanks, Peter!
sehr gutes Video mit abwechslungsreichen Zuggarnituren und schönen Bilder der Landschaft. Danke Mike Armstrong
You should do an episode about why some freight cars share wheel sets, for example: Flatcar.
Yeah, I could put an episode together on "Articulated Rail Cars". Thanks for the idea!
Great selection, good photography
Love the NN in Ely Nevada.
Would be cool to expand this into an actual Train Talk. Also to have a Train Talk on Hi-Rail equipment.
Beautiful and nice videos. The crane in operation is so cool.
I LOVE Your videos
Thank you!

ganz große klasse. besonders der dampfeisenbahdrehkran
Awesome video and catches as always!
Thank you!
Nice collection of equipment into one video! Thanks. I recognized a number of locations filmed, but not all. If you don't mind a minor suggestion, please consider indicating the location where these were filmed.
Thank you! I used to regularly put captions for all my clips, but I received a number of complaints that it was distracting, so I don't do it as much anymore, the one exception being some of my longer narrated videos. If you want to know any locations in particular, I'm always happy to provide that info. Perhaps a solution would be to place a pinned comment in the comments section with all the locations and their corresponding time stamps?
Thanks for your reply. I chuckled to myself as I realized how impossible it is to keep everyone happy! No worries. Keep up the great work!
Like to have seen more work with the steam crane
I have a little more video of it, but I cut it down for this video so that it didn't drag on too long. I will take a look at the original video and see if it warrants a separate upload at some point.
Awesome Video Mike
Very nicely done video and great catch.
Great video.
What locations did you use? There is some spectacular scenery in this video that I'd love to view, myself.
These were filmed all over the U.S. Some locations include Arizona, Spencer North Carolina, North Platte Nebraska, Lincoln Nebraska, Long Island New York, Feather River Canyon, and the Nevada Northern Railway and Museum.
Any information about the steam engine that was on display at como park zoo and then I last saw it at the midway yard round house of the Minnesota transfer
Awesome video.
Thank you!
haven't seen a steam crane apart from on Thomas the Tank Engine, so this was really great :D
KingKramer I believe that's about a 1918 buckyrus Steam crane
KingKramer vyx d z wep
:D Thanks!
Could you maybe make a "Trains and Music - Rain" video put to classical music as a semi-sequel to your "Trains and Music - Snow"? Just a suggestion. Anyways, a great video as always!
Thanks, Joshua! More classical music videos are coming and that could be a great theme for one of them!
Wow amazing !!!!!!!!😃
:D
4:23 Bingo I found a NS heritage Unit (not on NEC)
Yup! There it is! I caught one other near Altoona, PA trailing on a mixed freight.
I guess you caught the Penn Central by accident. Other than that pretty good.
Yeah, I was actually waiting for one of the SEPTA AEM-7s. I caught another NS Heritage unit by surprise out near Altoona too.
Nice Video!
Thank you!
Good one.
Thanks!
Wower than wow
Great vid! What kind of camera do you film on?
Thanks! This was filmed with Canon XA10 and XA25 cameras.
Wow..............very,very nice Video!
Can you do a train talk episode about the bnsf Escondido local and the Escondido bnsf yard?
AmtrakMan42 Lover
That's always an option. I will be doing more Train Talks in the future on certain railroad lines and hot spots, so I will add that to the list of potential topics.
Love your videos! :D
Thank you! :D
Max D
Very good video..keep up the good work!!
Wish the RR still had an used these big cranes
08.08 min was amazing that was steam crane...
It's a very neat crane. It can be found at the Nevada Northern Railway and Museum in Ely, Nevada.
CoasterFan2105 : sir that was amazing machine just made me crazy and eager to see it live but unfortunately its far away from my place ..lots of respect to these legendry machines their engineers and workers who gave us these machines....😊😊😊👌👌👍🌷
Perfect.
Good !!
Thanks!
We call these "departmental trains" here.
Three times in the video you were shooting from an elevated position down on a curving elevated track with a curving elevated road the rail track went from from left to right and the road went from mid left to lower left ,where is that located ,its gorgeous and i have seen it before but dont know where it is ?
I want to ride a truck in train rails
That crane was cool to see, is that crane still in use today?? Thanks for sharing
Hey Robert, the crane is at the Nevada Northern Railway and Museum. It is as I understand it one of, if not the, only operating steam powered railroad crane in the U.S. It is brought out for occasional demonstrations. These particular scenes were filmed during the railroad's annual Winter Photographer's Weekend in February of 2015. They vary year to year what demonstrations they do during the photo weekends. If you want to see it, I recommend contacting them via their website www.nnry.com or messaging them on Facebook to see if they have any planned upcoming demonstrations.
Thank you very much for the info on that crane. It's good to see that not everything has disappeared, and to see some of our history saved
i like, great video!
Hey Mike! Have you officially made any traveling plans after the florida trip? Also, great video I liked it.
Thanks! No official travel plans yet, and it is possible the Florida trip will be pushed back into 2019. So far, it is looking like the PNW trip that I had originally planned for next month will be pushed back a little bit and may also include some of western Canada and my trip following the Transcontinental RR will be some time in July.
there's a mobile crane on one of the flat cars.
Nagyon jó videó Gratulálok!

For a second I was like wait what a Penn Central then I realized it was the NS heritage
Haha, yeah. That scheme looks very natural on that locomotive.
Maintenance of Way
