Why did you use teflon tape on the union threads in the first example, but not in the second? And while that was a neat trick wrapping the teflon tape onto the screwdriver bit before wrapping the tape around the union threads, I would have applied the teflon tape to the union threads before I glued that half of the union to the pipe.
The styrofoam you used will not work in my area, the municipal water pressure is 50 psi. That foam will be blasted away in seconds. This technique worked for low (or no) water pressure.
I ran across a broken old pipe, the shut off on the street was 2 blocks away, it's midnight the water department wouldn't show up for hours, till about seven am. We fix it with the water running!
