Culturally speaking just becuz it was a thing from back then dont mean it need to be now! A republic means a canadian is the head of the canadian state not a foriegn queen
      Ur argument is based on a rather flawed philosophy that the our 100 year old traditions r necessary

    Here in New Zealand we don't have serious debates about removing the Queen. Our cultural, ethnic, and historical roots all draw back to the Empire. We simply wouldn't be the prosperous country we are today without our history under it. Today the royal family holds little real power but it helps us maintain these core links to our brotherly nations. This is why we voted to retain our flag. We are who we are, and what we are is a country forged by British immigrants, under their British identity, who were loyal loyal to the monarchy. It is thus important to us to retain our heritage rather than ditch it for a meaningless, historically negationalist identity. Furthermore, having a common, purely symbolic head of state assists with diplomacy inside the Realm through having commissions rather than embassies to manage relations. Nonetheless, I understand the non-Anglosphere nations choosing to ditch the Queen. They were nations before colonisation with their own unique culture and identity.

      Finnlay Harris im from Hawkes bay and im in favour of ditching the monarchy. Yes we got here in this place because of them, we are a wealthy country mostly because of them but not much has changed since the 1990s involving the monarchy in New Zealand. Our tourism would most likely still thrive if we left the commonwealth. People don't come here and spend thousands because of a couple of people, they come for the beuty of the country. The queen doesn't control anything or do anything to benefit NZ. If a law passes in NZ through the govt and the queen doesn't like it, she can't do anything about it. The main reason we still have a queen is because most people think they bring tourism and people from Britain coming to live but all in all only 38,300 British people came to live in 2014 and 1.2 million came for holidays. they account for about 15% of our tourism which is basically nothing and im sure they wouldnt stop coming just because the queen isn't our head of state.

      @raphaelfranks2339 7 років тому +8

      Melody Clark while there haven't been huge debates around the issue, it's a serious, albeit not pressing issue. Many Prime Ministers admit support for a Republic, there is a Republican party and organisation, and the very fact that we even had a debate about changing our flag is proof enough that there is an issue surrounding how people view themselves in New Zealand, and our relationship with the Queen. Obviously most people are pretty comfortable with the status quo, but it's naïve to assume that means it's not a serious issue in the country.

    In New Zealand, our founding document (the Treaty of Waitangi) is between the Crown and the indigenous Maori.
    Some fear that becoming a republic would lead to divisive politics with debate around a codified constitution and whether indigenous property rights under the treaty should be maintained. Basically, many see New Zealand as more united with The Queen as Head of State. Personally I have no appetite for the fall out from becoming a republic, but I appreciate the issue is less complex in other commonwealth realms.

      I know. Traditions are worthless. I view the monarchy as a symbolism of our past history as part of the British Empire. It connects us to our history. I know, I know. Those awful colonizers! Just what standards of living would all the colonized have if it wasn’t for colonization? There have been empires for millennia. The Persians, the Egyptians and of course the Romans who colonized Western Europe to England. Transferring their organizational, technological, and military skills to less developed cultures. Colonialism, how humans progress.

    Also, She is legally the Queen of Canada. We are not ruled by the Queen of Britain, thought she is that too.
    Constitutional monarchies tend to be the most stable democracies worldwide. See Scandinavia, BENELUX, Japan, and the Dominions. Then look at global statistics for freedom, quality of life, education, corruption, etc. You'll notice a trend.

    • @Sammie_Sorrelly
      @Sammie_Sorrelly 7 років тому +57

      Not to be that guy but correlation doesn't imply causation, especially not weak correlation. Certainly, looking at the Human Development Index, for example, constitutional monarchies are more often in the high levels of development, but there are still three (of a total of 39 constitutional monarchies) categorised as having low human development, and several more as medium. Consider also the many potential historical factors - several constitutional monarchies are European countries that have been powerful historically, and experienced their industrial revolution relatively early, several others are former colonies thereof. Japan is something else unusual, a very recent democratic system built on a very old monarchy (and its first attempt at a constitutional monarchy went really pretty badly - see "government by assassination" in the 1930s and, of course, the period of war that immediately followed it).
      So you can totally say that constitutional monarchies are generally pretty successful, stable modern democracies, but there's not really a credible claim that these countries are successful and stable because they are constitutional monarchies.

    • @JJMcCullough
      @JJMcCullough  7 років тому +100

      Likewise, you could look at some of the other Commonwealth Realms like Jamaica, or the Solomon Islands, and note that they don't seem to be doing too well despite having a monarchy. A lot of analysis of monarchies seems to focus exclusively on white, first-world countries and ignore the experiences of ones in the global south.

    • @tehDevious
      @tehDevious 7 років тому +15

      Of course no system is perfect, however these nations have chosen to stay in this system. I doubt becoming a republic would solve any of their problems. There are far more republics in the "global south" in massive poverty, so I would posit that it is a regional issue vs one of governance (thought I don't think thats what you were saying). Being a realm could potentially give them a way out if channels were explored between the richer nations, and accusations of neo-colonialism were shelved.

    • @tehDevious
      @tehDevious 7 років тому +11

      I think it plays a factor. One argument is that the populace in a constitutional monarchy may despise the government, but they rarely despise the source of power of the state. In a presidential system the symbolic head of the nation is often virulently hated by the population. I just need to mention how the Americans View their president, how Hollande was seen in France, and how the Current Mexican President is massively unpopular. In Monarchies, the ruler is generally viewed as an ambivalent entity who wields the symbolic power of the nation from a sober place. The very fact that they are unelected, and had no ambition to the office (born into it) gives them more respect for the position. Yes you sometimes get unstable monarchs, but scandal ridden presidents are far more common, and much more damaging.

    • @tehDevious
      @tehDevious 7 років тому +10

      Finally, I'd mention that the First Nations here see their treaty agreements with the Crown as incredibly important. It is a personal contract between leaders. This will loose value if replaced with a nebulous and vague presidency. The crown is a substantive symbol of the Canadian state. Once that is removed from a person and turned into an ethereal concept, the permanence of these treated becomes threatened.

  • @BigBoiiLeem

    So, I'm personally a monarchist, I'm from NZ (one of the commonwealth realms which still recognizes queenie as our head of state). I don't judge people who are against the monarchy because where is the point really?
    I have two main philosophies behind why we should continue recognizing the queen.
    1. The cost the changing our systems to exclude the Queen would just be too expensive and pointless. As most people will point out, the queen has no real actionable power over the commonwealth realms, and she represents no immediate threat to the status quo of our institutions, so there isn't much point in changing the entire functioning structure of our countries just because we can. It works fine, and theres no reason not to keep it that way (I mean, for better or for worse the British Empire made our countries what they are today). Most of the countries that did change their political systems to exclude the monarch had just undergone radical change (like emerging from a decades long dictatorship or civil war) and were restructuring anyway so unless we remaining commonwealth realms have some other reason to change our political systems drastically I say we shouldn't bother.
    2. The British Monarchy has a special place in our lives. I know this is one of the most crusty and dried up arguments in favour if the monarchy that has ever been used, but personally I think the monarchy gives us an ideal to strive toward, a symbol of the culture that we have retained from our colonial past. I just like the monarchy, I don't judge people who don't like it, I just feel like having the Royal Armed Forces, or the Royal Mail service, or Her Majesties' Royal Yacht Port (it has a nice ring to it).

      2. Prior to 2016, the government did pay for a "civil list" which was 40 million pounds a year. However, in exchange, they got ALL rhe profits from the Crown Estate, which in 2016 prior to everything being changed, the government made around 200 million pounds off of the Royal Family.

The monarchy can’t ‘inspire’ people BECAUSE it’s tradition. If the monarchy was meritocratic, THAT would inspire. Anyway, in UK, nobody comes because of the royal family. It’s not like the Queen is there every day to wave at people or anything. The tourism is actually tonnes of Chinese going to Harrods...and the shops in Knightsbridge, Chelsea, etc. They buy Burberry and stuff like skater brand Palace. Most would want to go to Warwick or to the Beatles zebra crossing as much as they would the palace.

      Yes, she has no power so it is purely symbolic. Colonial symbolism is still a controversial subject; similar to naming various towns and colleges after slave owners and whatnot, so I think it's the illusion or 'gesture' of power over a sovereign nation that seems to cause resentment. In Britain, she is symbolic relic of a bygone era; a ceremonial tradition, and nothing more. In Canada, she is a symbol of colonial tyranny which has been long since severed. Still her face is on all the money, so it's kind of like having pictures of your ex all over the house, even though you've been separated for like, 70 years.

While no law prevents Westminster repealing/amending these Acts what is, however, entirely feasible is a request for a statutory instrument pursuant to one of these Acts to clarify a meaning or an intention. This is specifically mentioned in the Canada Act 1982 & the Australia Act 1986. The Aus government for example could have sought a judicial review to resolve the recent citizenship crisis in order to clarify what British law, and specifically the 1901 Act, meant by 'subject or citizen of a foreign power'! In practice, it'll be the leader of the largest party, but in theory it could be anyone. The Prime Minister is not directly elected by the public, except those in their own constituency.

So any link with the United Kingdom is an undesirable obstacle in the road to that objective. Not that it's a plausible objective, I just wonder sometimes watching JJ whether he gives a perspective that is perhaps not entirely representative of wider Canadian opinion, - such as when he says "Canada is basically just America", which I am confident is a sentiment most Canadians would take umbrage with.

It nearly happened. I voted for the republic at the time. In retrospect Im glad it didnt happen. I was like the guy in the video and thought having the Queen as head of state was stupid. Ive since changed my opinion; and I like our historical ties to the British crown. Its who we are and something we should be proud of. As a Dutchman, I'm quite fond of monarchies. I also think it's wonderful that the former empire is still bound together in this way, which is mostly symbolic anyway. I love the idea of monarchy as it gets you an independent, non political head of state that you can't disagree with because they're not allowed an opinion (poor souls), as opposed to eg the US, where more than half of the population is a political opponent of the current head of state. They also have some weight to throw around as, for example for such a non-important country as my own, the US president, for example, will hold a very complex and fancy reception if the king comes. For the prime minister? Not so much.
    And I think for New Zealand and Australia and many of the other commonwealth realms it's quite nice to hold on to their cultural ties with the UK, of which, believe it or not, there are many. I guess that Canada, and especially quebec might be a special case though, because of the French and American relations.
    The only problem I have with monarchies is money. But that's more an issue of the Dutch one, as the Dutch monarchy currently costs nearly 1.5x as much as the Windsor one, even though there are only 17.5 millions Dutch citizens (including the Caribbean countries), and at least 64 million Britons, and then I'm not even counting the Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, Jamaicans etc.

Here I see her as being Queen of New Zealand and Her other Realms (of which the UK is one). She is a New Zealander in all respects as far as her power rights and privileges are concerned and her appointed representative is also nominated by the NZ government and is usually a highly respected NZer as well. This is the best of both worlds if you ask me. Plus it also means we have the opportunity for apolitical review of laws so if the government decided to implement some heinous law like enabling slavery there is an apolitical person that could be petitioned to reject that also the High Court is an independent branch of government because they draw their authority from the Crown and not from Parliament. Yes that would create a constitutional crisis but it would also draw attention and buy time. Anyway I like having the Queen as Head of State.

    Hi I'm from the UK and I agree with having Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state. My reasons for this are simply that she is a link to an old culture that's pretty cool and therefore brings more money into any country that she is Head of State for than she brings out, meaning there is no reason to get rid of her. Also she has devoted her life to making the world a better one, using her key position to support charity work ect... In conclusion there is no good reason to get rid of the British monarchy as it does much more good than bad, including in the States that she's head of. In addition with natural disasters in the past few years, being country with the Queen as their head of state has lead to instant support and relief from the government of the UK.

    Well the Queen (or the Governor General) acts as the executive branch of government in Commonwealth countries with the Westminster system. It provides a final and non-partisan legal check and balance in case the Prime Minister and his party goes mad and tries to destroy the country.
    Without the Queen (or the Governor General) as head of state you'd either have to eliminate the executive branch, thereby giving the Prime Minister/their party the power to largely do whatever they please or you'd need to have a President.
    I know I'd much rather have a figurehead Queen and a Prime Minister who can be dismissed by a vote of no-confidence from his Party then be stuck for 3-4 years with a president with small orange hands.

This remarkable little lady has conducted herself in a dignified manner all of her life, and is respected throughout the world even by many who believe the monarchy to be an antiquated system of government. As much as I admire her, I don’t believe we will see the likes of someone like her ever again.
