Plot twist! It was in color the whole time.
But seriously, this was a very informative video.
Definitely looking forward to more in this series since I'm determined to get better at values.
Silent hill music works pretty well for educational videos
needed a teacher like you, super inspiring lessons!
been practicing a lot since i saw the GI series.
This kinda video from moderndayjames blows my mind every time
You deserve more subs dude. We appreciate your generosity.
The better drawing channel . O melhor canal de desenho que já vi !!
This is awesome and I can't wait for the rest of the series!
james have you ever done an art progression thing ? showing some of your older art all the way to newer stuff. i'd love to see something like that if so. i love seeing where artists have come from and seeing where they are now and their progression along the way.
Thank you for putting this information out! not a lot of artists here on youtube talks about stuff from the book.
i have become extremely preoccupied with trying to start a business so im not doin alot of practicing, but im just here to watch not even intending to practice... just watching..
in awe
.
this guy's amazing
Wow. I read this book last night in how to cast shadow. You made it easier to understand. Thank you.
incredible your teachings just what I was looking for thanks friend
That twist!
thanks for this james, this is TIGHT!
What does the terminator say when the sun goes down? "I'll be back."
Finally this video came back!
3:57 important (note for self)
great video! thanks a lot man
cant wait for the next video
Great lesson
Greant help… thanks a lot!
you're doing great, keep up the good work and thanks :)
Another great video nice work!!!
that's a good plan
you sir... are a G!
Thanks
The background music is so delightful, I wonder where is it from?
love it!!!
Thank you modrendayjames. you have made my live easy :). I love you your your generosity and explaining every thing to that precise level Stay blessed .
great video
Really great tut👍🏼⭐️ It’s going pretty fast, tho - I know I can simply pause for every complex and informative sentence, but a friendly tip from me is to slow things down a bit after each point or tip.
Can’t wait to watch more👍🏼🎁
I agree, I tried to tackle too much info in too short a timespan! The next one will be slower, thanks for the feedback
Cool, thanks for responding :) Even an old fart of an art director like me gets a lot out of this (and other) video of yours; especially refreshing old knowledge and understanding things I never learned way back when - so it´s really appreciated that you are sharing your knowledge. Thanks! :)
youtube has a feature where you can slow down the video super slow!
we need vehicle tutorial
MOVIES FX draw a cube, draw cylinders, refine by rounding and texturing. Always practice by drawing chassis
Amazing!
You make it all so clear.
Can't thank you enough.
What are the brushes you are using?
Roughs, final line and of course, the markers?...
Je used the default round brush for both the roughs and finalized lines.
How do you judge the value for things with more plains, for example low poly looking and more organic forms, ive never gotten the hang of detailed forms, especially edges where shapes converge inward
Use your value scale of just 10 values only. Detirmine if your object is in light or in shadow. Light and shadow must be separated clearly from each other. When you have saperated these two shapes you can give each shape a "range of values". How bright do you want your light shape to be? How dark must your shadow shapes be. Look at your scene and squint your eyes. Your darkest light may be around a 5 on the value scale, whereas your lightest light can be a 2. Only use the exact values that you have on the value scale. Keep it simple with just these 10. I see people using 100s of different values and that must indeed be very confusing. So now that you gave each your shadows and light shapes a "limmited range" from these 10 values of the value scale you can group planes within these ranges to those values. Wich planes are the darkest light, wich are the brightest light and as last wich planes come in between those. We call them "inbetweener values" but don't use any other value then 1 to 10. Nothing inbetween like 3,5 or 4,7. Think with every value you add on your canvas. Assign it to a plane.
I feel some strange presence around here... like, fog is coming... ah, Silent Hill. :D
Provided the value of the "floor" or the plane the object is on stays the same, does the value of the cast shadow stay the same as well regardless of changes in that of the object's? Also, how do you determine the value of the cast shadow?
Is there an extended gumroad video for this James?
Hey james, very cool stuff! It is a bit offtopic to this video, but could you offer some wisdom about how to achieve good line quality like yours? I like how your lines are essentially wobbly-ish and freehandy, but the end result is very tight looking. Did you practice straight lines in every angle as it seems from this video, or are you used to rotate the canvas? Also do you consciously force yourself not going over lines once they are put down, even when they are not perfect? Anything else that comes to your mind about this topic? Thanks in advance if you find time to answer this :)
Hi. Do not understend how you choose value to №2 side of cube ?
This video makes me want to play Silent Hill 2 for some reason....
Can you do it with like more organic characters thing?
yeah I also love the tutorial and explanation though.
but organic things like human head seems pretty hard to paint even with this rules unless all you just wanted is some sort of human head on abstract.
I mean you need to paint and make it like a realistic human face.
Yes, this book is my bible
Where is the second video?
The book
local light is equivalent to sunlight?
James, is this in two point perspective? Or some other perspective?
It could be slightly 3 point. Look at how straight the verticals are and if they appear convergent
can some one tell me how you make circle and strokes like that in photoshop at 4:30?
What kind of brush do you use to get that marker effect digitally?
The sketchbook copic marker tool!
That makes a lot of sense haha thank you! I forgot that existed
In my restless dreams,
I see that town.
Silent Hill.
i thought so too
Watching your videos makes me feel like I'm back in school. I'm about to get told off any moment now for doodling in my books.......Is there going to be a quiz on all of this at the end of the video? Fuck I better pay attention........But I can barely stay awake.
I was always struggling with values until I realized that everything is technically a mirror.
That Silent Hill music is giving me PTSD flashbacks...
Part 2????
Top 10 anime plot twists
when is the book coming out?!
Olandes Volador Its normale already in the store
he means my book, not how to render :D
how does your mind work
I want the soundtrack
Akira Yamaoka's tracks from Silent Hill ost. I can hear Heaven's Night and Pizza & Bowling tracks here. The other one i don't know.
I learned more from here than any book I’ve purchased lol
Well... purchased for free :/ must just be karma then lmao
abrupt ending
well mathematically
you forgot a number in the first cube... i think
need music sauce
Elias Pegilovus silent hill 2 ost
Are my ears hearing that Silent Hill soundtrack LMAO
There's no steering wheel
I got it for free
Dude is teaching vector projection like it's nothing. This is pretty much how it is taught in math.
Vector math can quantify these values, it has applications in all sorts of other problem solving scenarios, like graphics. The closest relatable thing I can think of is writing complex vertex lighting shaders, though basic shadow casting like this can be done by a default renderer already. This is what is known as Lambertian shading if you want to google it.
that's super cool to hear! My brother's a mathematician and I'm a STEM lord myself so that's probably where that comes from
Dude, what? This seems like really useful information but you just fly through the information and lose me constantly. I'd love a similar video where you go into more depth for each example.
My bad! I've definitely tried to slow down in more recent videos! I've heard people watch some of these older ones at .8 speed
Who even dislikes these videos?
And will youtube please stop it with the 6 minutes ad. These fucking capitalist scumbags trying to force people to skip ads so they have a reason to not pay youtubers for making the platform exist in the first place.
