For the past five years on this channel we've talked about everything, but usually only focus on one thing: How a show ends. But today, we're gonna talk about a show that's just beginning, a show that @MickeyJoTheatre has been following since the inception. The concept is simple: A story of the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle...but the execution isn't as modest as it first appears. We need to talk about Ride: A New Musical

Thank you to @itskatharinequinn for inviting us to come see the show and to @mickeyjotheatre for telling me the whole journey!
I am SO glad you got to come experience Ride! And I loved this convo featuring two of my faves 🫶⭐️
Poor UK audiences. Didn't get the glass ass in Bad Cinderella, and didn't get the dancing skeletons in Ride.
Mickey you've gone to Brasil to see Wicked, get on a plane to California and see Ride. You went to Broadway for Bad Cinderella, so go to Cali to see Ride. Your semi obligated (Half joking)
Glass asses and dancing skeletons - chronicles of a theatre friendship across the pond
I agree that Broadway shouldn't be the goal of every theatrical production. So many fantastic Bway shows I've seen in just the past couple of years that flopped on Broadway (A Strange Loop, How To Dance In Ohio, Ain't No Mo') would've been successful off-Bway. (Not to mention my favorite musical of this past season - or any season - 'Here Lies Love,' which you couldn't get a ticket to off-Bway, then inexplicably failed when it moved to Bway). In any case, I do hope Ride comes to NYC in some capacity, you've both got me intrigued!
I mean Merrily We Roll Along by Sondheim was infamous for failing
Came here for the musical content, stayed for you awkwardly explaining Oingo Boingo to Mickey Jo
☠️☠️☠️
😂😂😂😂😂
Yes Mickey Jo, you need to come see Ride here in San Diego and your west coast followers can meet and see you! Besides Into the Woods, the Globe originated quite a number of shows that went on to Broadway including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Mariage, The Full Monty, and Bright Star. I’ll even take you to our world famous zoo as my guest!
Allegiance started at the Old Globe as well ❤
If the Dancing Skeleton and the Glass Ass were to combine their powers, Mickey Jo wouldn't stand a chance.
Wow, talk about timing... This video came at just the right moment- I'm working on the premiere of my first musical, and feeling like a failure for it having taken so long, and being so far from the great white way, and feeling trepidation, hesitation, whatever word you want to use, impostor syndrome... Seeing the story of another show's journey to success in a non conventional manner gives me the push I needed today. Thank you for that.
I saw this 3 times in the west end run last summer after watching mickey jo theatre’s album recording video, and it instantly became my favourite musical ever, it BLEW me away.. so I couldn’t have clicked faster on this! 💖
This musical has grown on me- I love it.
Such a great show which shows that you don’t need a big cast or set to make a big impact
Dancing skeletons? I loved this show and saw it twice at Charing Cross Theatre. Love the score and thoroughly enjoy the storytelling .. MJ please go and see this in San Diego. Thanks both, always enjoy your chats!
I am in San Diego and saw Ride at the Old Globe last week and really enjoyed it. To be honest I only went because I recalled Mickey Jo saying it was a good show. On paper it sounds meh to me, but it lived up to MJ's praise.
BTW I think I sat behind you at Teeth when I was in New York last month. That show is insane! I love shows that really go in for the extreme premise. Loved it!
Recently saw Ride in San Diego California. So amazing!! The song Stranger gave me goosebumps….
I saw the Old Globe performance of Ride with high school students. In the talk back, the students had great questions & even better observations. They connected so well to this performance. I loved it twice, once for me & even more for the kids
BTW In the talk back the kids asked if the actors ever fell off and they said no never. Their favorite part was the bikes so they could sit down 😂❤
Hopefully you go see the Chicago run of Lord of the Rings and you and Mickey can talk about that too. It was nice seeing the actress who played Pippin in LOTR, Amelia Gabriel, in the image shown at 4:11.
I was overjoyed to see this video! I am a major Ride fan because of Mickey Jo! I was hooked with his first review then his video of listening to the recording for the first time. I have watched the filmed verson of the performance at the Charing Cross theatre. After hearing that it changed to make Martha and Annie's relationship more romantic, I REALLY wanted to see it. I have listened to the recording more times than I can count and have seen the proshot on Broadway on Demand over 20 times!! I live in Oregon and was estatc to see it was coming to the States! However it is too expensive for me to fly to San Diego and I almost atempted a 12 hour drive but thought perhaps it must tour closer places, maybe Portland Oregon. I WILL see it live someday!! I was thinking it would be great at the Public Theatre in NYC then go to Circle in the Square. I saw Fun Home there. Not sure how they would do it in the Square but I know they could. As far as having a man play Annie's love interest during her ride, that would not only not fit as it is Martha who is acting out the story with Annie so she has to play the part. Also it adds the speculation that Martha has feelings for Annie. If people don't know much about Ride, Please go to Mickey Jo's videos, you will fall in love too!!😍🤩🥰
Where can I watch this show, I've never been able to see it but would so love to watch it!
Im only familiar with Ride thanks to Mickey's cast recording reaction, so this will be a thrilling video for me
Hadn't heard of Ride, became curious as you explained, was sold when it was explained as "if you love Watch What Happens from Newsies, you'll love this" 😂😂😂
The title number "Ride" is acc such a banger.
Ah! I live in San Diego and had no idea about this show. Just bought a ticket.
Take the trip Mickey Jo! We have followed the show since the Vaults, and the staging and illusions are really up a gear in San Diego. The opening sequence in the lift is really cool and the tenement scene takes you to to new places.
As much as I love your documentaries, I really enjoy videos like this one!!!! Where it's only you and someone else geeking out about theater!
Love you two collaborating!!
Saw it opening week and loved it! Highly recommended 👍🏽
These guys are like long lost theatre brothers 😂❤ I love it when they do a video ❤
It was an amazing show! I saw it last week. I haven't seen a show like that in a while. Go see it if you can!
Taking a whole moment to talk abt oingo boingo made my day. I love oingo boingo
I was really surprised when Oingo Bongo came up, since they were clearly before Henderson's time. He must know as much about pop music as he does about theater lol
@@raymonddigiacomo3072 they were before my time too lol I just looked them up once because I couldn't believe there was really a band named *oingo boingo* and then I listened to their songs and they're good. Boingo oingo
Love love you both of you guys omg
I am San Diego based! If you come here I can show you around!
I know a lot about vault. Sad it’s closing
I was in the front row on opening night and the fears of driving the bikes and chairs into the audience are REAL!
Anyone else swamped by memories of Starlight Express? I saw the first us tour and it was INSANE. I love that the show is still alive.
Go see it, Mickey Jo!! If Brendon can be pushed into buying tickets to the Tony’s, you can get forced into going to California!!
Please do a video on the Outsiders, probably the best musical I’ve ever seen
Really enjoyed this show at Southwark Playhouse Elephant. Great songs. Hope it has a further West End life.
mickey jo you have done crazier trips go see ride!!
Dancing skeletons is 2024s glass ass
"Into the Woods premiered at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California, on December 4, 1986, and ran for 50 performances"
As expected, Mickey knows his Into The Woods lore
A great theatrical review! A minor point….Micky Joe constantly pushing back his hair from his eyes was really distracting.
Oooooh crossover episode!
Always here for an Oingo Boingo reference.
I've heard this show was filmed. I've looked high and low and can't find barely any info online, is there anywhere I could watch this show, I never got to see it but am intrigued to see it.
It’s the Charing Cross version of the show
@@BrokenDoll2 yes but where can I watch it?
The website is broadway on demand
There are definitely bootlegs of the Southwark Playhouse (queerer) version...
I keep posting the link and it’s keeps deleting the message for some reason :/
I saw you there
Do you plan on seeing the new revival of Tommy? I saw it in the 90s and loved it.
What song are the dancing skeletons in?
i dont know at all, but if i were to guess itd be in 'everybody loves a lie' during the big jazzy finish, i feel like thats the only place where itd fit tonally. like maybe annie's lecturing biology or something, hence the skeletons? again, i dont actually know tho
Yes, it's Everybody Loves A Lie because they are at French customs.
Edit to add: the skeleton appears in a crate at customs when she talks about going to Harvard and then they take it out/use parts of it for the entirety of the song. It is brilliant.
I’m lucky enough to have seen Ride in both the UK and the US and @MickeyJotheatre should 100% go to San Diego 👀
Yes you are very lucky!!
Have you ever seen or heard of 'Starmites?' My aunt took me to a local theater showing and we ended up walking out after 30 minutes...I have never done that in my life ha ha. It was the most bizarre and horrible show but then I went online and saw it's a cult classic with great reviews??
Oh shit, another WITW/MickeyJo crossover
Neat.
"The Vault festival is a more mature Edinburgh Fringe?" I mean clearly not, as the vault is cancelled and was only around for a handful of years...
I think he said more achievable!
Could we have the full 45 mins tho? Lol.
PS: DANCING SKELETONS!!!
Please be a musical adaptation of the bicycle thef
How are dancing skeletons the glass ass of this show? Just to have that parallel exist can break your brain
fellow oingo boingo fan
2023: Glass Ass
2024: Dancing Skeletons
Oooo
Go see it mickey jo
Do it! Do it! Do it!
@@rof8412 We need a new vlog in the statessss
MICKEYJO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE
"More achievable Edinburgh Fringe because it's in London" wow - love MickeyJoTheatre's work, but a London-centric view of theatre is whats killing theatre in the UK right now. Vault-like festivals are disappearing all over the UK - CHAMPION THOSE! Champion all grassroots, in development theatre pieces - not just London ones! BORING, REDUCTIVE, VIEWPOINT,
I'm pretty sure he just meant if you're creating theatre and already live in London then it's more affordable to mount something at a London festival than travelling somewhere else like Fringe.
More woke junk
You seem lost.
