Yeah, he actually had this rare thing with how his vocal chords or whatever were made, so he could do the BJ voice. He says it on an interview. Like, for other people it would be really hard and scratchy for anybody to do the voice for that long, but for Alex, he can sing and do anything doing the BJ voice and it doesn’t hurt at all. Like, it's just like speaking for him.
@@arianaecall thank you, and BTW, want a bootleg? I'm watching one now.. It doesn't have the beginning, but its pretty good quality so far (I'm at dead mom)
jillian patricia sy The interesting thing is distance isn’t necessarily everything... I live in California and it would be much cheaper for me to get a flight to London and see a West-End show than to get a flight to NYC and see a Broadway show.
I’m not on broadway or anything, but I TOTALLY understand the nervous thing. I played Buddy in ELF and I was practically shitting myself before going onstage, but you use that energy to your advantage. It’s also weird because is happens EVERY single performance, but once you hit that stage you never wanna leave
I was Caliban in my schools rendition of The Tempest, I was so nervous yet excited and loved every second of playing him. I think I’m just compelled by strange and unusual (and evil) characters because I myself am strange and unusual. Like, my recent favourite characters in musicals have been the SQUIP and Beetlejuice. At the play, we had chosen that Caliban got to travel back with Prospero, but the very last time we were going to do it I came with the suggestion that Caliban could be left behind, that he didn’t get forgiven. I didn’t practice nearly as much as wished I had right before going out there. I was very anxious but everything went really well! And Caliban got a whole lot of “Awww”’s. “Prospero! I’ve got everything packed and I think we’re ready to go! ...Prospero? Hey? Umm, Where is everybody? Prospero??”
so last year I got to be Aunt Em in my school’s production of the wizard of oz and even if it was a small role I remember being kinda nervous backstage (exactly what he was describing, having butterflies etc) but then when I got onstage it was this incredible feeling of adrenaline/excitement and that’s one of the things that made me realize how much more passionate I am about theater than I originally thought I was
I think the vocal thing may be similar to how the Muppet actors do monster voices like Grover and Oscar the Grouch - like how falsetto protects your voice up high above your money-range, only down low?
I think the audience might not have a mic or they just don’t want to put that kind of emphasis on them besides the individual questions. You can clearly hear someone engaging with him towards the beginning, so it’s not like they’re uninterested. We’re just so used to laugh tracks and audiences being extremely loud. They typically tend to make things seem louder in shows like these.
I went to see beetlejuice and it was my first Broadway show and Alex made it amazing for me. He was so good and I still can’t get over it, I wish he came to the stage door but at the stage door I got a picture with Presley, David, and Adam. It was amazing!
When he said “Playing, making funny faces and voices in the mirror.” He said we all did that as kids. I may have not done that as a kid, but I do relate. I would sing my heart out every day playing karaoke songs from UA-cam, and that is how I think my love and talent of singing came about. For the longest time I thought a lot of people did that! In a grand scale, there are a lot who did, but many who did other things like Alex!
When he said that thing about being able to be weird on stage and being encouraged for it, I just HHHHHHH This is why I love theatre and the theatre community
I’m a hula hoop performer and for halloween, I’m supposed to perform at a party. They told me my theme is beetlejuice. So I’m extremely excited for this.
I saw this about two months ago as my first broadway show ever, and I had such an adoration for Beetlejuice the movie alone, and such an adoration for all things Broadway, and to have them combined for a first time experience was beyond amazing. Can’t thank the entire cast and crew enough for that (as well as both respective Alex’s). Only regret from it- can’t really afford to go see the show fifty more times which I’ve wanted since it ended.
I saw him in School of Rock & I loved that! Then I went to see Beetlejuice on my birthday and I was so pleasantly surprised with how the show turned out I’m for sure going to see it again!
Alex Brightman inspired me to try and join our theatre. I have wanted to since I was very young but never had the guts too. Hopefully, I can get a part to play in the next musical. Thank you, Alex!
Also holy shit, I wrote the first Broadway show experience comment before 22:30 and just to hear him say that makes me respect him as a performer even more (and I’m not even sure how that’s possible)
see alex’s reasoning behind why he can do the voice is the reason i can’t imagine anyone else playing beetlejuice on your (hopefully) next year. obviously since he has the special ability to do stuff w his chords he’s able to do it healthily but for practically anyone else they’d have to either sacrifice his voice or sacrifice the performance.
I mean I have seen Will Blum doing BJ (not live, wrong continent :'(, you can find it here on youtube!) and yes, obviously the voice is completely different and he can't do the croak, but his Beetlejuice still totally works in its own right.
i saw Beetlejuice in late January, and it was my first Broadway show! It was so incredible! I alo got Prezley Ryan (Lydia understudy) and Kerry Butler's (Barabara) signature. One of the best days of my life!

I think also the mics didn't pick much of it up, since it could barely pick up the host's voice at his chest.
how do they not react to anything? he's being hilarious!

Alex is the Keanu Reeves of Broadway
Holy shit if that isn’t the most accurate description....
Gnome Queen that is the best thing I’ve ever heard

The most accurate statement ever made haha
Gnome Queen what about Lin Manuel Miranda?!
He deserved that Tony. Santino is great and all, but Alex is just incredible.
I agree. Santino is a very good actor but Tootsie is not his best work.
1000000% agreed .
HE’S SO NORMAL OMG-
alex must be protected at all costs he’s so precious i’m crying
Holy crow! I thought that the vocal trick was the reason behind the casting choice but he figured it out AFTER he got the role?!
