"For the video for Settle Down, The 1975's singer Matthew Healy got together with Nadia Marquard Otzen, to bring to life a story that's been very close to his heart. In fact, he's been dreaming it for years. The video, conceived by Matthew and directed by Nadia, is superficially a drama within the hard-bitten confines of its setting in the North-East of England. But in fact, its about the bond between two boys that transcends grim reality - evocatively shot by DoP Martijn Van BroekHuizen - and reaches into the supernatural. "I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger," says Matthew. "The narrative was loosely based, but the setting was always the surrounding areas of where my parents grew up. I think I was slightly obsessed with how certain, bleak areas of Northern England contained my history and the soul of my family, my psyche. I always felt connected and disconnected at the same time. Metaphorically and physically I would visit these places frequently as a youngster and in turn have used them as the setting to a lot of the stories in The 1975. The North East was the visual setting to my formative years. "I suppose, like any narrative, the meaning and the connotations within the story are subjective. I’ve always been quite fascinated with the potency of same sex relationships, platonic or otherwise. I was brought up in a very open-minded environment, somewhere I felt that, whoever I was, I would be accepted. With this understanding I was also very aware of others, school friends, acquaintances - whom, due to where we lived, probably didn’t have such a comfortable place to grow up. We were unaffected and affected by taboos and the small-minded at the same time. I’ve dreamt the story of these two boys on countless occasions - every time drawing a different conclusion on its meaning. "With ‘Settle Down’ I wanted to make a story about the extension of that dream, a video that explores love, a video that was as fantastical. "Upon meeting Nadia, I told her about my dream. We sat for hours looking through pictures and talking - it was decided in those moments. We were just to film my dream. The process of making this video was so intensely exciting for me as I was finally working through and figuring out exactly what this place, this story and these characters meant to me. I think now that I understand it. But I’m totally open to suggestions / interpretations."
Trust me, if more frontman singer-songwriters from well-known pop/rock bands made music videos about boyhood same-sex desires & spoke openly about them like Matty Healy does, the world would change in some very important ways & also a hell of a lot faster.
Lyrics: A soft sound To the way that she wears her hair down Covering up her face. And oh what a let down, And I don't seem to be having any effect now Falling all over the place. well everyone has different opinions and we respect that :) and everyone likes different music, people may think Nirvana is shit and Skrillex is amazing, vice versa.
well i dont really listen to 2 chainz or any crappy music that i think is overdone but compared to the crappy ones there are lots and i mean lots of other bands and artists that are completely amazing and creative
MemoriesDestroyUs Welp music like I Got U and Am I Wrong are 2 examples of perfect music, oh wait I forgot Lifesaver, these are the ones I can think of atm... And all of The 1975's music of course :D I'm a 21 year old male by the way
The fact they have actual verses in their songs doesn't hurt. They're a tremendous band; the 80's new wave influence is great and a refreshing change from today's more commercially driven music.
William Davis they are, for sure, but their style doesn't fit the typic pop mold of today. They're more lyrically focused than most, which isn't what most artists are doing.
it feels so weird coming back to watch this video knowing that their new album is coming out in February and they are breaking out in color. There is just something so special about their black and white era that I feel sad having to leave behind.
+mumblematter I feel you. I fear they will become commercialized despite their freethinking mentalities. With a release of a new album, you know some sounds must change, and appearances will change, to keep an audience engaged, but with these newer upbeat releases, I'm kind of skeptical...I really enjoy a melancholy and mysterious vibe like Me, Anobrain and Fallingforyou. I hope they continue that into their new album.
+Noah Hollingsworth Matty says in the opening of that video that it should be black and white and commented on how the 'pop' vibe was not what the band is really about. Girls was meant to be a sarcastic take on pop videos and is more of a juxtaposition to the music that they predominantly make, not a representation of the band as a whole.
this is one of the most timeless songs ever. if i could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, it would be this one. i love the rest of their songs (so much) but this one is so special in such an unexplainable way. i could never get sick of this song.
I danced with a girl to this song on our first date. We were doing the swing for the most part. When we got to the part where the instruments slow and so does Marty’s voice at 2:38 it was something magical. Was one of the best moments of my life. My favorite gem of a song on their first album.
Hey, everyone, this is what Matty had to say on this video. They sent out am email when it was released and as he usually does, he explained it. Hope it'll help anyones confusion xx I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger. The narrative was loosely based, but the setting was always the surrounding areas of where my parents grew up. I think I was slightly obsessed with how certain, bleak areas of Northern England contained my history and the soul of my family, my psyche - I always felt connected and disconnected at the same time. Metaphorically and physically I would visit these places frequently as a youngster and in turn have used them as the setting to a lot of the stories in The 1975 - the North East was the visual setting to my formative years. I suppose, like any narrative, the meaning and the connotations within the story are subjective. I've always been quite fascinated with the potency of same sex relationships, plutonic or otherwise. I was brought up in a very open minded environment, somewhere I felt that, whoever I was, I would be accepted. With this understanding I was also very aware of others, school friends, acquaintances - whom, due to where we lived, probably didn't have such a comfortable place to grow up, we were unaffected and affected by taboos and the small minded at the same time. I've dreamt the story of these two boys on countless occasions - every time drawing a different conclusion on its meaning. With 'Settle Down' I wanted to make a story about the extension of that dream, a video that explores love, a video that was as fantastical, consuming and limitless as the love we all chase and desire. Love as I have always imagined. So upon meeting Nadia, who directed the video, I told her about my dream. We sat for hours looking through pictures and talking - it was decided in those moments. We were just to film my dream. The process of making this video was so intensely exciting for me as I was finally working through and figuring out exactly what this place, this story and these characters meant to me. I think now that I understand it. But I'm totally open to suggestions / interpretations. X
coming to terms with your sexuality especially raised in a strict compulsory heteronormative environment feels as if it was enlightenment, at least for me, and i think the glowing part at the end of the video capsulated that experience of clarity in terms of my being sexually fluid. the part where the elders dropped to the ground says a lot about society feeling as if someone else's sexuality should directly concern them & be burdened by it to the point of falling apart, when it shouldn't
I am 60 also, and I am way into current music. I'm not ever going to be one of those old farts who still listens to crap we listened to in High School or 20 years ago. I would miss stuff like this! NO WAY! I found Matty and the 1975 and I am IN LOVE!!!! They are Brilliant!
Yeah, I like them a lot. I also love The Neighbourhood, and Sunderland(they're not every known, but so good). If you want to check them out their UA-cam name is Sunderlandrock, I remember after one of their songs was featured on the first episode of Finding Carter they got a lot of attention and deleted almost all of their videos off of UA-cam(they had hundreds, I guess they didn't want to people see all their music before it was released since they finally got big).
HeyImSecretLover You know Sunderland? Lol. Oh God, that's so rare to find another person that knows them, their fan base is less than 10,000. Lol. Which sucks cause they're really amazing. I know of them cause actually my friends cousin is in it. Lol. The friend's I speak of have a vlog too actually. It's called 'CoupleVloggers'.
Why does everyone say their songs all sound the same? Because of the unique sounds used in their music that's not in other bands' music, they sound different than more popular songs, thus making people think they all sound the same? Each song by this band is obviously BY this band, so of course each song will be similar because of their music style, same goes for other bands. What's the point in pointing out the similarities of each song of THIS band when practically every other band is the same way? There's only ever a difference if A.) comparing albums (and this is The 1975's first, so there's no argument about EPs either), or B.) If the band didn't really write their own music. And That's why The 1975 is amazing, because they've poured their heart and soul into this music.
I totally agree, if people are accusing songs of being similar, look at One Direction, most of their songs have the same tune, and i'm sure they aren't writing them, thats the type of band that will die out eventually like Mcfly did back in the day as they run out of ideas, I think music sounds much better when it is original and The 1975 are producing this rare genre which sounds amazing!!
Everytime I listen to this song, I’m always brought back to that time when I visited Japan, Mt. Fuji in all its glory, with this song playing on my earphones. This song, along with many others from this band, bring back so much special memories from my past.
That's me with crater lake and dance Gavin dance. This song will always remind me of welding I listen to it at work and havent heard it since I first heard girls way back when I was in highschool. I'm sad now
that's honestly beautiful, this sing as a whole is incredibly nostalgic, especially the guitar before the bridge for me. to have grown with this band as a soundtrack throughout my teen years is everything
for those of u who are confused about the video, this is what matty says: "I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger. Amen! Yes he is adorable as fuck but they're a band... All of them. He's not a fucking solo artist. Fangirls will be fangirls though... It's just some of us aren't 13 anymore ;)
just because there are other band members doesn't mean I should love all of them, Matty is just the vocalist so of course he gets most of the attention!
The blast furnace in this video was knocked down this week after being part of the landscape - and livelihoods of so many here - for 47 years. I’ll miss it. I’m glad it’s preserved here, with this song, for years to come.
I love all of their songs, but for some reason, this one remains my all time favorite. I don't know if it's that funky ass guitar, or Matty's great vocals, or the pure nostalgia, but none of their other works comes close to this one to me.
Cinematography is so beautiful! I love the black and white and big, airy, wide shots of the environment. B&W matches the aesthetic, the feel of the video as well. Also, notice how their's no lip syncing/dialogue, and we get to see a visual representation, a story, of the sound we are hearing? So great!
i remember listening to this song when i was a freshman in highschool. i would dance around the empty girl’s lockeroom, dreaming for the day i would graduate and never look back. it’s nostalgic to visit this song as a sophomore in college and know that they brought me such joy in such a dark time.
This was the second one I ever heard. The vibe and the lyrics got me through so much. It actually eases my severe anxiety most of the time. Thank you Matty, Adam, Ross, and George for such relaxing music!!!
+Laura Minardi "small town, dictating all the people we get around" - Settle Down "a big town, synthetic apparitions of not being lonely" - She's American, as well as "and oh what a let down, and I don't seem to be having any effect now" - Settle Down "oh what a let down, a shame, I think he might die" - She's American. It also correlates with A Change of Heart! " you're cold and I burn, I guess I'll never learn" - Settle Down "for goodness sake, I wasn't told you'd be this cold" - A Change of Heart. Hope that helps xx
I favor the self titled album over the second album solely because of this song. I tend to gravitate to the more "raw" and "pure" sound of the first album rather than the "computerized" sound of the second. (Don't get me wrong I love the second album) Settle Down is so lovely and timeless, just like this band.
I think this video showed the two boys going through a lot of emotions and family troubles they may have had in their lives so they start doing activities such as trying to teach themselves how to box to distract them from what's going on even though they should be staying at home. At the end when they connect everything around them slows down and pauses so the people can reflect on themselves and it shows that people under certain circumstances are not alone... Hm yeah that's what i got from the video :) oh and love the song has always been one of my favourites in the album x
(Found this, hope its helpful) "I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger. The narrative was loosely based, but the setting was always the surrounding areas of where my parents grew up. I love the meaning of the video, simply means that love is more powerful that non understanding parents, stupid extreme people in church and the place these little boys were living and then is matt showing how the story starts. So is a really good song and video and please stop saying shit like "oh every song is the same" at least they're not trying to sound like every fucking pop artists on the radio
I think that they are two friends who realized that were in love and when their parents found out they were mad and banned seeing each other. The final scene wants to show that their love (being so pure and beautiful) can kill other people's "spirit" or "beliefs" (both parents and people on the church) because they can't understand that kind of love.
Also notice how they spent most of the MV just missing each other by the second, but drawn closer and closer with each shift in scene. The moment they touch, the clouds open up and light shines through. It's like that moment of clarity when they realise that "things are going to turn out alright after all".
I feel like all of their music has almost the same tune when you get to here them all, but sounds more like Chocolate or Girls. But then again that's when you know you're listening to the GREATEST BAND EVER!!!
gary cahill lol actually they are the complete opposite. they don't like to classify themselves as a specific genre. each one of their songs has it's own sound. watch any of their interviews, Matty speaks brilliantly about it. he calls their sound "guitar & b" sometimes. my personal favorite :) haha
picking out, following and listening to each instruments in this song has helped me tide quite a few panic attacks. there were days i would listen to this for hours just to stop my thoughts from consuming me.
I LOVE THAT THIS WAS FILMED AT REDCAR/SOUTH GARE I KNEW I RECOGNISED THE BLAST FURNACE IVE BEEN GOING THERE FOR YEARS AND ONLY JUET RECOGNISED IT WTF 0:11
It's about the bond and connection between two friends. It speaks to the power of relationships-regardless gender etc. Plus these boys are a little young for it to be anything romantic. It's simply about friendship and the power of that type of bond, especially in a town as stark and sad as this. The 2 have a spark because they now have a companion to be a fellow child with; a fellow adventurer. Sweet concept.
IM 60 AND I LOVE THIS SONG WHAT A BOP

Lyrics:
A soft sound
To the way that she wears her hair down
Covering up her face.
And oh what a let down,
And I don't seem to be having any effect now
Falling all over the place.
But you're losing your words
We're speaking in bodies
Avoiding me and talking 'bout you.
But you're losing your turn
I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
Your hands, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you.
A small town
Dictating all the people we get around
What a familiar face.
Do you get what I mean now?
I'm so fixated on the girl with the soft sound
And hair all over the place.
And you're sure that I'd learn
I'm pushing through bodies
Avoiding me and walking 'round you.
And you're cold and I burn
I guess I'll never learn
'Cause I stay another hour or two.
For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house

Cool!!....Enjoy!!
Stephen Johnston This is the friendliest conversation I've ever come across on youtube xD
This is definitely a favorite. Has a very strong 80's vibe.
Lol.. The whole album is based on 80's movies.. Best album of the last 2 years at least i'd say... ;)
Sure it is. But the force is strong with this one. :-) Great album!
The album has 80s vibe, and the best album I and band I ever since Panic! At The Disco.
I danced with a girl to this song on our first date. We were doing the swing for the most part. When we got to the part where the instruments slow and so does Marty’s voice at 2:38 it was something magical. Was one of the best moments of my life. My favorite gem of a song on their first album.
These guys are gonna be as big as The Beatles I can see it
I love The 1975... but they're not going to be anywhere close to as big as the Beatles. Oasis, possibly, but not the Beatles. That's hallowed ground.
I hope they don't become as big as the Beatles bc for one, the Beatles suck major asshole.
ZOMB13B1TCHx Yeah they do but I think the will be as successful as them
I love the similarity to 80's music.
One might say it feels very... 1975-ish..
+Oliver Andrews you're officially my fave person in the comment section of this video
I see what you did there. Nice.
+Oliver Andrews well done... Well done
OMG I was just saying how I feel that I've grown to love the 1975 because my love for the 80s and their similarities to the 80s
if this isn't your favorite song of the 1975 we can't be friends bye
+Dianne Irwin ok i'll live with that they have lots of other good songs too. :)

Hey, everyone, this is what Matty had to say on this video. They sent out am email when it was released and as he usually does, he explained it. Hope it'll help anyones confusion xx
I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger.
+Jourdan Herchanik can I ask when he sent these emails/how you got them? xo
2 years later and I’m still wondering how you got these emails hahahahah
@@niamhmcg7842 very late reply lol but i'm assuming it's the email sign up thing on their website? you know most artists have those.
Elle thanks! I’ll try that.
coming to terms with your sexuality especially raised in a strict compulsory heteronormative environment feels as if it was enlightenment, at least for me, and i think the glowing part at the end of the video capsulated that experience of clarity in terms of my being sexually fluid. the part where the elders dropped to the ground says a lot about society feeling as if someone else's sexuality should directly concern them & be burdened by it to the point of falling apart, when it shouldn't
What I interpreted the falling down part as was sort of like no matter what their opinions don't matter and this is who I am kind of deal
@@cyruslever586 there's overpopulation anyways
I'd like to say this is my all time favourite album in the world... Start to finish, Done!
I agree with you 100%!!!!
Hello, how are you doing today and the entire family and friends doing today
I'm obsessed with their sound and vibe damnn.
Psychedelic as fuck
+Janjan Jimenez psychedelic? It's so clean. Vox is so top40z
there are very few bands today that can beat these guys.
Ashley Pruitt Thanks :)
Ashley Pruitt Good shout on Sunderland mate!
There are thousands of bands that don't only sound better but are loads more creative than these guys
I used to be a fan, now I'm a fucking windmill

I totally agree, if people are accusing songs of being similar, look at One Direction, most of their songs have the same tune, and i'm sure they aren't writing them, thats the type of band that will die out eventually like Mcfly did back in the day as they run out of ideas, I think music sounds much better when it is original and The 1975 are producing this rare genre which sounds amazing!!
i kinda love how open ended and unexplained their music videos are. it makes you perceive them how you want and how it can relate to your own life.
As someone who's childhood was all through the 80s, I can certainly say this song would have fit right in. Great wee tune :)
X" xx
Justin John Sablan ....What?
Everytime I listen to this song, I’m always brought back to that time when I visited Japan, Mt. Fuji in all its glory, with this song playing on my earphones. This song, along with many others from this band, bring back so much special memories from my past.
That's me with crater lake and dance Gavin dance. This song will always remind me of welding I listen to it at work and havent heard it since I first heard girls way back when I was in highschool. I'm sad now
that's honestly beautiful, this sing as a whole is incredibly nostalgic, especially the guitar before the bridge for me. to have grown with this band as a soundtrack throughout my teen years is everything
for those of u who are confused about the video, this is what matty says:
"I used to have a reoccurring dream when I was younger. The narrative was loosely based, but the setting was always the surrounding areas of where my parents grew up. That's exactly what I got out of this!
i am so completely in love with Matt. 😍
OMFG IKR!!! he's a babe
lol, Matty*
lol idc
sarah xo lmao its okay i was just being sassy
Alex Johnson idk just thought you're one of thOSE fangirls that would attack you for calling Matt "MATT" and not "MATTY".
this song makes me feel like the 80's!
Do you even know what the 80s are
James Guvercin Belittle much?
James Guvercin
Dude this song sounds like Phil Collins remixed the sound track to Punky Brewster... Do YOU even know what the 80's are?
I’m now addicted to this band
Sameee
saMe bro i am simply so late to the party
dear all fangirls there are other members in this band other than matty! you should 'love' george, adam and ross just as much!
I totally agree with you, they're a band for god's sake.
I love them all!!!
sam kenedy Exactly..(And Ross is far better looking)
WHEN U FORGET THERES A SETTLE DOWN VIDEO AND THEN U REMEMBER AND THEN ITS ALL U WATCH FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
I just realised as I clicked this
The blast furnace in this video was knocked down this week after being part of the landscape - and livelihoods of so many here - for 47 years. I’ll miss it. I’m glad it’s preserved here, with this song, for years to come.
Hello, how arr you doing today and the entire family and friends doing today
I love all of their songs, but for some reason, this one remains my all time favorite. I don't know if it's that funky ass guitar, or Matty's great vocals, or the pure nostalgia, but none of their other works comes close to this one to me.
This is the first song I ever heard by them and while I have a new favorite, this one will always be special to me.
This whole album is a masterpiece. Perfect from beginning to end.
True!!!! ❤
The concept behind this video is a love story between two young boys. That's the base, the rest is for every person to interpret.
As soon as Matty sings "A soft sound..." I melt...
I'm currently watching this on the beach where part of the video was filmed. META AF.
This song, and this Self Title album " THE 1975 " is still my favourite.
Thank you Matty, Adam, Ross, and George for such relaxing music!!!
this is their best era
agreed
hi u again
@@hauntmybed6037 i met you on comment section before (: ehere u from btw
@@hauntmybed6037 awesome .. in from singapore and i wish u had twitter so we can share about 1975 (::
I agree, their debut album is the best
Bizarre video, but I love it. Never heard of this group til now, but now I won't forget them.
I live here.
Thank you GOD! the Black & White is Back
This is hands down my favorite The 1975 song. It’s been 5 years and I still haven’t got tired of this!!
A friend recommended this. Not disappointed. At all. This is great.
almost 2 years later and I still don't know what that sound at 2:20 is, chicken maybe?
+GingerGoggles ITS HIM SCREAMING "HEY" LMAOOO
Omgggg I've been laughing for the past 5 minuets

iM IN FUCKING TEARS LMAAAOOO
lmao
can't wait to see these guys play main stage at Reading Fest this year!!!!!
and leeds fest woooo!
The cinematography made me feel like I was watching a Francois Truffaut or a Jean Luc Godard film. Awesome.
This is by far my favorite song from their discography. Such an underrated track.
Settle Down is one of my favorite songs in the album LOVED THE VIDEO
How are these guys not HUGE yet? I'm only just hearing about them.
+Andrew Dempsey Check out their tracks Sex or You if you haven't already. They are waaaaay underrated lol
Totally agree.
number 1 in like 10 countries and probably the biggest band in the world now
they won a brits award they are huge
My favorite track by them. Weirdly beautiful video.
I live where this was filmed, the guy on the horse is my great grandad
grats👏
my dad works with a woman whos dad was the man on the horse. does someone in your family work for HP?
Just can't deny the talent and MAD beats. Thanks The 1975.
i love the correlation between this and Shes American
+AmandaKay yesss!!
what is the correlation? :)
+Laura Minardi the graph shows a negative correlation.
Yesssss
I favor the self titled album over the second album solely because of this song. I tend to gravitate to the more "raw" and "pure" sound of the first album rather than the "computerized" sound of the second. (Don't get me wrong I love the second album) Settle Down is so lovely and timeless, just like this band.
yes finally someone said it! its the lyrics of the songs that are just so raw like you said whereas iliwys is way more glamorised
Those little harmonic picks at 1:33 are so subtle but adds a lot to the verse.
Believe me, they are gonna go far in music ...
They already did ;D
They did.
I LOVE THE 1975 AND THE BLUE COLLARS. THAT IS ALL
Agreed, I love them both, would love to see them play together again

Matty Healy is the only British singer I know who doesn't lose their British accent while singing.
this is their best song to date, period!! everything about it is just so perfect 😭
That guitar at 0:30 always gets me like nothing else...

i just love there back-then style! its unique and amazing
They are such a beautiful band. I love their sound, very lovely!
This takes me back to easier times, happier times in my life as a teenager. God bless The 1975
I love the meaning of the video, simply means that love is more powerful that non understanding parents, stupid extreme people in church and the place these little boys were living and then is matt showing how the story starts.
Logically they all sound the same, it's a specific "genre" and that's exactly why all of their songs are pure gold in my opinion.
gary cahill lol actually they are the complete opposite. they don't like to classify themselves as a specific genre. each one of their songs has it's own sound. watch any of their interviews, Matty speaks brilliantly about it. he calls their sound "guitar & b" sometimes. my personal favorite :) haha
picking out, following and listening to each instruments in this song has helped me tide quite a few panic attacks. there were days i would listen to this for hours just to stop my thoughts from consuming me.
Somehow their sound ALWAYS gets under my skin and inspires me. Can't help it. When I write my great move, I definitely want them to do the soundtrack!
Que legal! O recado que esse sucesso deles passa! Amo o grupo e a música! ❤️
every single one of their songs feel surreal
Every time I listen to 1975's songs, it feels like my inner child starts moving and dancin again ♪♫
