Earlier this week, I had the fun and exciting opportunity to accompany my friend, Ms. (Maxine) James and her family to do sea moss (Irish Moss) harvesting, oh yeah!

It has been long overdue and I couldn't wait!
And we did it neither swimming nor diving!
How is that?
Well, they used an interesting technique using the feet to feel it!
So yes, you walk the seabed and feel with your feet!
I managed to surprise myself and 'picked' a few lofty, juicy batches though! Yes with my feet :-)
But the expert was... no, not Glen, her husband, but Maxine herself!
By the way, we had two types, one appeared to be the genus Gracilaria and the other Chondrus Crispus.
It turned out to be more fun than I thought too as we were visited by a giant jellyfish and a sea crab!

OMG! I went to boarding school at Ruseas High Sch in Lucea. I choked up thinking about those wonderful years of my life which made me who i am today. It was wonderful watching thru my dorm window banana being loaded onto ships and stingrays swimming in the sea. The Fort was a favorite place to hang out. Unfortunately i didn’t have a good understanding of the nutritional value of Iris moss at the time. Watching this from northern USA helps me escape the cold. Your channel has been a Blessing especially during the pandemic lock down.🙏🏼🇯🇲🇺🇸🇬🇧

The thick seamoss is the Chondrus Crispus and no it doesn't only grow in cold climate. It get thicker the deeper it grows in the ocean. However the one that grows from the coral rocks has more minerals as it pulls the minerals from the rock.
The skinny seamoss is the Genus Gracilara.

@@ainsleyameerali7622 i have been researching this subject extensively and have read many reports from marine biologists and industry professionals. Neither are better and i have yet to find any actual evidence that there is any actual difference in the health benefits. If anyone has found any info that contradicts this PLEASE share with me!!!

I have been extensively researching this topic (reading many research papers) and have seen Chondrus crispus growing in the Caribbean, Mexico, Peru but every marine report that i find contradicts this. The info that I have found suggests that what people think is warm water Chondrus Crispus is actually Mastocarpus stellatus. Have you heard of this? I am very puzzled as I have seen this with my own eyes and would swear that it is Chondrus but no marine biologists have confirmed this. do you have any insight on this? Thanks!!!!!

After the sun comes up it will be easier to see diving for sea moss with diving goggles, which is my preference. I couldn't bother with that walking and kicking up business. It looks too time consuming and boring. I had more fun diving for them when I was a kid.
They're also all over the seafloor, not only by where the river runs out to sea like she said. There's also very high concentration on reefs and the rockier parts of the seafloor all year round.
That June season thing she talked about probably only happens in the sandy beach parts like where you guys were. Also, the season aspect of it there could be attributed to over harvesting on the beach, seeing that's mostly where non-divers tend to harvest. Then they have to wait till June when the young ones reach maturity.
The year round high concentration on the deeper parts of the seafloor and reefs that are further out to sea, tends to stay in abundance because it is more difficult for non-swimmers and non divers to access.
I couldn't see the bill on the bird, but if it had a deep pocket bill, then it was a pelican, not pelikin like the man said. It could also have been just a seagull.
There are about 13 different types of sea crabs. The one he caught seemed to have been a blue crab. Stay safe bruh, and enjoy the holidays.

@@earthlycolorbrown6246 idk anything about sebi's version. Sea moss is available in ready-made drink form in stores throughout Jamaica and here in the US. Don't know if the raw moss is sold in stores in Jamaica, but here in Florida we can get the packaged ones in many different shops.
You can probably get the raw moss from local vendors in Jamaica, idk. I'm Jamaican, but I don't live there. Also, I've never used bladderwrack. I've seen it floating around in the sea in Jamaica and in the ocean here in Florida, but didn't know it had health benefits until now.

How safe is this product for consumption? Did you test it to see if there are any things in it that may make you sick? Luceda harbor? Land runoff maybe?
The Agar Agar in the ethnic stores is a refined product made from the sea moss. In Jamaica it's called called isinglass.

It's made into carageenan, that food manufacturers use as a thickening agent. But in Jamaica it's used naturally to make a gelatinous drink. When it's refrigerated, it's like JELL-O.
Can't it be used directly from the sea ..without drying?
I love the benefits of sea moss but as of lately and the rise of microplastic in the sea and sea organism I’m concerned if it’ll also affect the sea moss? I worked with a vegan company that made carott lox and they used different types of algae and they started to get concerned about the microplastic inside the algae. I would love to hear about different views and facts for this cause I can’t find much on the internet especially regarding sea moss. Lots of love and blessings
