Shawn Lane was such a rare player because his harmonic and rhythmic knowledge were not overwhelmed by his cutting edge technique on guitar. Yngwie's harmonic knowledge and his musical statements are dwarfed by his incredible technique. There is a sort of mismatch between technique and content. Shawn Lane's content is as big as his technique. Lane is like Allan Holdsworth in that.

So true…if you’ve heard one Yngwie solo you’ve heard them all, he’s fantastic but not in the same class as Shawn Lane was.

I find Yngwie's work to just sound like a collection of etudes. Boring. This cat here is in his own orbit. Reminds me of Coltrane's approach.

...and the dude sings like an angel? where does it end?
before long it will come out that Lane was perhaps the best MMA fighter that has ever been in the amateur ring. he was also responsible for the restoration of the sistine chapel, and you might also recognize Shawn Lane via his acting alter-ego billed as "Daniel Day Lewis."

Jason Becker is arguably more melodic, uplifting and fresh and can play just as fast without tapping or sweeping - and he was only 18 when he showed his debut chops.

The first three qualities are subjective, but Shawn's alternate picking was measurably faster than anyone else - and well, Shawn was a lot younger than 18 when he toured with Black Oak Arkansas :) Don't get me wrong, I love Jason's playing but a) it's worthwhile to ensure your argument holds water and b) who cares? I hated it it only because Shawn didn't have his signature Viger and Jeff SIpe wasn't there because its the only pro shot video we have of this trio in the 90's. Back in Memphis Shawn was a dear friend, at that time he was not adding the texture of the human voice to his music, I love hearing Shawn add that element to this gig.

@@wavefields 1982 83 at that time Shawn had no gigs, and in Memphis he was treated like an alien, to me he was just a beautiful person and friend , we enjoyed taking a toke and listening to music and talking about books. He listened to a lot of Franz Liszt and he was reading the poetry of of a writer named Spencer Holst.

I met Shawn at a Punk Rock dive bar called the Antenna Club owned by Steve McGee , it was a tough joint, the bouncers name was Angerhead, a lot of mohawks and bad dudes around, Shawn and I were both out of place, I was playing in a group called Johnny Singer and the Highlights, which was a Elvis Costello cover band etc.. Shawn was just playing a pick up gig because the other band ... I can't remember the name... needed a guitarist.. Shawn tore it up playing beautifully wild solos on their Rockn Roll covers, they were pissed off. His solos did not fit with their music.. at all.. zero.. we became friends.

And one more.. Andy Tanas who played with Shawn as kids also played with him with Black Oak Arkansas and they were at some big fest where VH was also on the bill and backstage Shawn was warming up and Eddie Van Halen walked by and heard him and looked over at Andy with a '' Holy shit'' look

At 18:02 you can really appreciate how fast his fingers are moving with that behind the neck camera angle. This solo section is filled with gnarly licks. His left hand is really close to Holdsworth when it comes to speed, stamina, and sheer agility. What a beast.

A great talent. If anything, he probably plays too fast at times. Things get more interesting when he slows it down and plays with more expression rather than pure speed. His health condition I believe, was an exteme form of psoriasis, which I suffer from myself. He made his mark no doubt.

Shawn is the only guitarist that can play super fast and emotional, every note he plays has a mean! He is so creative and unique! I have seen him live once and had the pleasure to exchange few words! He was so kind and chatty, I believe he also gave me his email address as well (can't remember). I know he loved an Italian classical pianist called Maurizio Pollini, he was pretty obsessed with him at the times. Thanks for the video!

hahaha you don't HAVE to do anything if you don't want to. You heard this and put a comment on it, its a simple as that. If you choose to hear more of shawns stuff, then thats great, because he truly is the greatest guitar player that ever lived.
