I heard his big band play this live. I transcribed it for one of my student bands over 20 years ago. I must resurrect it. Fly With The Wind is such a fantastic tune and that album is fantastic. Thanks for posting this.
@@JazzVideoGuy True.. i would go even further than that and say that without people like this we wouldn't have the faintest idea what Jazz music was about .. How would anyone be able to say anything meaningful about musicians like Charlie Parker for example.. And what would the history of this music be like without, for example, those Blue Note records..
Somebody call 911, these guys are on fire (even the strings burn)! What an amazing arrangement! This recording just over flows with passion and grace. It is an absolute favorite...
Great album.. I've had this one for about 30 years.... weirdly enough I first heard a clip of it under "jazz" section in MS Encarta... those were the days!
The first jazz bass part I ever learned was the bass groove for "Fly With the Wind" with Kent Cressman, who was McCoy's biggest fan. I had no idea till now that I started out with a Ron Carter bass riff. Perfect! McCoy! Ron!
@@JazzVideoGuy Yeah, I was so lucky. My parents were jazz fans, so I grew up on jazz, but I never thought I could play with say Les McCann or Herbie Mann. But, then, I was divorced and needed to make twice as much money all of a sudden. Bass playing paid twice as much as guitar ad singing. It was a McQuire Sisters type band, but Kent was a McCoy maniac and he would take me to his jam sessions with his jazz buddies so I could learn how to play walking bass. That's the way to learn.
Great to hear Orrin Keepnews give some back story about this recording. Fly with the Wind was one of my McCoy favorites, and he kept it in his performing repertoire for many years after this recording. I had the pleasure of hearing him perform it with his big band in the 80’s. Thanks for another fascinating video.

This album had a powerful effect on me, when I first heard it decades ago.
Great to get these oral histories while we can get them. Thanks BP.
I love these interviews of yours.. This guy preserved so much great music.
Orrin was living history.
