      Just setting off. Not sure ill survive 6 nights sleeping rough though. Alot to be said for bikepacking via road and air bnb. I may indulge. Yep, you are a lucky guy living around mid Wales. Imagine it may have draw backs like most places, but great outdoors. Beats my Somerset levels.

    By sheer coincidence I was riding my 1120 in the same region a couple of weeks back. I wasn't fully loaded on this particular ride however I'm back there this coming week bike packing. I've fitted a much lighter set of wheels for road and off road with a dyno hub powering a k-Lite set up for night time use, I've also fitted a redshift stem, swapped the bars for a regular flat bar, fitted SQ Labs inner bar ends and fitted Ergon grips. I ditched the dropper seat post and fitted a conventional post instead and opted for the Bontrager Verce saddle. If I'm honest with myself I basically bought it for the rack system :)

    • @badgersbikepacking4138
      @badgersbikepacking4138  3 роки тому

      Yep, same for me. Was mainly about the racks. I’ve just done exactly the same in terms of wheels/tyres. Love the 3 inches of rubber, but it felt so slow on any road. If you’re crossing Iceland or snow covered area, or rough rocks then they work, but in the UK when you have a fair amount of road to get between sections, then you need something faster. So I have just ordered some 32 spoke wheels and 2.35 inch fast rolling tyres. Got rid of the crazy saddle I used in Scotland, and back to Brooks. Also contemplated dumping the dropper as mine has some play which I don’t like. Dynamo alway on my list, but just don’t think I’d use it enough. Red shift stem - there’s an idea!!

    Fantastic video.....I’ve ordered an 1120 as I fancy some 2/3 day trips up here in Yorkshire and Northern England, hence found this video to check my impulse purchase out. But learnt so much more. Presently building up bottle to try the bivvy thing......crazy I know that it should be a big deal to a 50yr old, especially as my son is a soldier and he’s been doing it on/off during exercise for the last three months.
    Doesn’t help that I saw a rat in our garden last week 😂
    Off to watch your other stuff now......

      Awesome. Yes, sleeping in a bag on the ground doesn’t seem right does it. Well, I have another video from my Scottish trip with the Trek coming up. It is a great load carrier, but off-road fully loaded comes with its problems as you’ll see in the vid. Anyhow, thanks for the feedback which makes the hours of filtering 4 hours of recordings to try and find something of use can put me off this you tube lark, but a little encouragement like this keeps me going. My bivvy issue has always been ground crawlers, so I only really tend to use them in the winter. Slugs are the worst and I’ve woken up with an Adam Ant slime trail over my face before, so I use a bivvy with bug mesh in the summer, but if it’s cold, open face is fine. Anyhoo, enjoy the vids. I cant believe anyone watches that crap....😂

    Yeah, the longer wheelbase on the 29" bike makes for a much better ride. My 27" on my Malvern star though good, is not as smooth as my TDR with the 29" wheel.'s

    It's a nice bike and well designed, I think that clunky noise from the front of the bike could be the brake pads hitting the disk rotor when you move it side to side.
    I was looking up the gearing on the trek 1120 and front cog (1x) 32 teeth and rear (11speed) from 11 to 34 teeth that is not a good climbing gear (32÷34=0.94)...I have a 28 front and 34 back (0.82) and my mountain bike 22 front and 32 back (0.68)I love granny gearing😅

    • @badgersbikepacking4138
      @badgersbikepacking4138  3 роки тому +1

      Ah, that may explain the noise. I’m a roadie background recently so not really experienced the sound before, but that would make complete sense. On the gearing, it is a 46 tooth on the back with a 30 on the front from what I know, so 0.65. My gravel bike has 31/48 up front and 34 at the back, so 0.91 and I can certainly notice the difference. I am a massive fan of spinning up the climbs as much as possible.

    You should be documenting the locked gates on gusseted Road. They are supposed to be right of way, if they are on a map and go through a property you much close it behind you, It is unlawful to lock a right away

    Just stumbled onto this great video / channel, and have duly subscribed.
    As luck would have it, I have the Trek 1120 and love the stability too.
    And as you mentioned, it's a beast of a bike, and as luck would have it, I'm thinking of getting a Ti bike after this (that was how I stumbled onto yours), and am thinking of one of the following:
    1. Mason Ti
    2. Mason AL (after watching your other video on this)
    3. Lynskey GR300
    Between the 3 (or 1 and 2), which one would you recommend I get please ? I still prefer a Mason, but from where I am, I might actually be able to pick up a second-hand Lynskey for half the price of the Mason Ti
    And if I say the Trek 1120 is 4/10 in terms of speed on the road, where do you reckon your 2 Masons might be ? Would love to hear your thoughts if you don't mind
    Thanks again for the vids, and looking forward to more
    : )

    • @badgersbikepacking4138
      @badgersbikepacking4138  3 роки тому

      The Masons are great, but I can't tell the difference between the Ti or AL. If you are just after a bike, I'd recommend the AL due to cost for the same ride feel from what I can tell. However, as I found, it isn't that simple. I'd always wanted a Ti bike so ended up with that also in the end. Expensive jump in price. If you want a Ti bike, it comes down to how important Ti is. The Lynsky is another nice one. If you like that enough and it is much cheaper, I'd go for that. But I do recommend the Mason quality. If the Trek 1120 is a 4 and a carbon road bike is a 10, the Masons are a comfortable 8 with maybe some Gravel King slicks on. Anyhow, thanks for the comments and hopefully I'll get back into a new video soon, but life is busy at the mo. Take care.

      Same, it just isn't forming to my unique, yet perfect arse. Looking to bin it but can't work out what for. Did fit a spring loaded saddle which weighed a ton, looked awful etc.. when I was in Scotland, and very comfy. But got too much of a ribbing for it 😐. Still not worked out what to use in stead. WTB probably. That's my second Brooks. Had the C15......concrete!!

    Great video. I’m looking at the 1120. Only thing holding me back is the rigid fork vs a front shock. How do you find it on the longer rides?

    • @badgersbikepacking4138
      @badgersbikepacking4138  3 роки тому

      Hi Paul. Concur reference the front sus. The 3” tyres help and I find they very nicely dull out the vibrations from the smaller rocks etc.. Loaded, the bike isn’t moving fast and for the speeds I move, the tyres are enough. However, the few fast descents I do, the impact of a rigid fork is noticeable. However, overall I’m not doing fast descents, so I don’t often get in that situation of having to slow down. I needed a front sus once in my recent trip to Scotland on a very rock descent, but I simply had to go a little slower, which was probably the right thing to do with a loaded bike. So, at the speeds I am carrying loads, the comfort is great with the tyres. It’s the occasional descent when I miss the sus. However, its a reasonable trade for a less heavy fork and some extra carrying capacity.
