  • Star Trek: Picard might think it's giving us imaginative vision of the future, but with its hologram displays, it's giving us a generic and ultimately cliche visual style that is interchangeable with virtually every other modern sci-fi.

Glass is actually still around! It's being used in the market that was always supposed to be its primary focus: commercial stuff, like in factories and r&d facilities. The latest version came out about a year ago, and it seems they will launch an upgrade every 2 years or so. While the original Glass deserved all the criticism it got, the newer ones seem to have found a happy little niche for themselves.

Okay, I've flown all types of planes for 10 years. I worked with people who create displays for real aircraft and I've worked in graphics myself since high school, and I can tell you...after an 8 hour day you would have a headache after an 8 hour shift, and you'd be ready to shoot this thing after a 40 hour work week. Its not even 508 compliant by today's standards, with all the biologies in the 24th century, this is impossible. Your idea is far better, and they've used that concept in several episodes, although it was always on the holodeck. But I know what Paramount and Kutrzman era Trek is going for...hollo displays are cheap and don't require prop builders. That cuts on development time and money, like you outlined, and it can look like every other freaking scifi show out there and conform rather than define itself. Everything else ether requires expensive props or real imagination.

yeah, as far as input on a regular computer, I prefer a keyboard where I can touch type while my eyes take a rest. The car radios with buttons are much better for many purposes because you don't have to look at the screen to change the volume. Also, for some purposes a smart phone and other devices are great, but using them all the time will destroy people's sight... love using a dual screen monitor with good ergonomics and screen height to avoid spine bending also.

Why bother when you can make it lazy, cheap and soulless instead?
For me one of the worst offenders were the replicators in ST: Picard - they used actual 3D printers as replicator props. It could be a funny easter egg if they did it once, but they actually did it multiple times and they didn't even bother to remove the insides - in one scene they did remove the print head, but in the other they left a complete 3D printer. Also the 3D printers had doors whereas the replicators in Star Trek never had any - it's like the technology in ST: Picard regressed a couple of hundred years.
Star Trek: Picard is a generic, lame Sci-Fi show.

This is just a symptom of the larger issues with both Discovery and Picard. Neither care about established lore, canon or progression instead opting for the "oooooohhhh fuuuuture" effect. Say what you will about Enterprise, but it didn't do this. It did break established canon and progression at different points, but it never sacrificed the feel of the Star Trek Universe for flashy sci-fi things. This is part of the reason Enterprise works so well as a bridge between our world and the Star Trek Universe.

I've been saying this for a while now. I didnt really love Enterprise, but at the very least you could tell that someone making that show loved the Star Trek universe. They went to great lengths to make their technology look like it could reasonably evolve into TOS tech.
Uhura had an earpiece so Hoshi had an ear piece not some cochlear implant that uploaded the transmission straight into her brain.
Spock used the periscope binocular thing on the bridge, so they gave T'Pol one as well.

Prodigy ep13, "All the World's a Stage", has the USS Protostar create a holographic TOS Constitution class bridge overlay ("Computer, load Constitution class holoconsole, mid 23rd-century. Translate command input to the Protostar's helm.") to allow a group of people familiar with that look (due to cultural contamination) control the ship.

Holograms CAN be done right in sci-fi
just look at how The Expanse handles them. They use hybrid displays. You see holograms a lot, but the 2D LCD screens are clearly there to stay. Because they are the only ones that render raster images
Videos and photos will ALWAYS be on displays. The holographic displays can only render vector graphics and wireframes which are reserved for extra menus, text and small buttons as to not lose realestate on the main flat display and presumably to prevent them from getting smudged from people touching them all the time.
They're also used pretty sparingly, only in situations where visualising 3D space is of prime importance, like for plotting efficient routes using gravity assists and there's a scene where Alex gets bored waiting on the ship and throws something in 0G across the main hologram and you can see it gradually get interrupted in a realistic way.
( this isn't explained explicitly but based on how holograms work in real life there's a technology where you use a lot of tiny lasers and adaptive optics mirrors to superheat a minuscule region of air so hot it becomes a plasma but for an absolutely tiny amount of time something like 10^-something seconds and it glows for an instant then it goes to superheat the next region of air and the image gets formed by your eye exploiting image persistence like CRT screens. you can actually touch the hologram and you don't even feel anything because although the temperature is really high, the amount of thermal energy is so small it would instantly get diffused into the nearby molecules of air so to your hand it makes no difference but when your hand gets close the light will reflect off of it and by measuring the amount of light coming back at every instant you can tell exactly where something touched the rendered parts of the hologram by knowing which cycle it intercepted )

@@nines3048 < unpopular opinion > I don't think it's perfect, I actually don't like the whole aliens and protomolecule funny business. Call me indoctrinated by Isaac Arthur, but I find the realism of mankind's expansion into space and the drama that ensues to be THE SHIT. I mean there's just soooooo much stuff you could do within that context, from a storytelling perspective that I feel that plot narrative is, well unnecessary, shall I say ?
I mean I can't blame the authors because it's like complaining GOT should be a more accurate depiction of medieval life and the whole ice zombies and dragons are bullshit and you could use the social systems within the GOT universe to drive forward all plot drama ... but then ... who would watch that amirite ? _( just an analogy since I haven't watched a single episode of GOT )_
While it's cool that the expanse gives us this "oh, what does humanity do when facing the unknown" , but we also get this dynamic in places like Star Trek etc. I mean part of me feels like such amazing detail was put into making a show based entirely on the realism of space and then they introduce magic ancient aliens ( I feel sorry for saying this but doesn't that seem like a waste ? )

This. Use holograms like these to represent a shipwide instant messaging system, a heads up display, or systems designed to be backdropped onto space. Something like that. But then add on with more physical systems. So Picard can use his classic monitors, or another captain can use a different setup. Use the captain's chair to give personality to the leader.

I think Henry or someone did a video on this topic in particular but for something as complex as piloting a ship through space hand eye coordination is important and actual physical response helps in that endeavor. This is why despite Tuvok’s objections, Paris’ joystick and knob style control panel on the Delta Flyer is part of why it handled so well. Paris talks a lot about “feeling the ship” he’s piloting or something like that. This is what he means.

When they show the Enterprise there's no hologram displays, so it seems they were trying them out on that one advanced science ship.
The Picard holograms look like a step backward from what we saw previously in TNG/DS9/VOY. Why do they look opaque and cartoonish? It would've made more sense to make them look solid. I like EC Henry's idea but even just having solid panel displays floating there would've been okay as well.

Thank you. I wasn't the only one rolling my eyes so hard at this that they almost did 360s. The thing about using tactile holographic objects instead (like on the holodeck), that I wouldn't like either, is that if power gets knocked out to those projectors in a fight, all of a sudden your bridge control panels, (and even the seats you're sitting on per your suggestion), just disappear. Yes, sometimes those hard panels explode when an enemy loads the ship with a bunch of directed energy, but they've still got to be more reliable than a hologram. Just use hard, physical, re-configurable panels... like they do in STAR TREK. That would free the makers up to focus on other things, like stories that make sense in Star Trek, and characters that make sense (ya know, who don't bring a sword to every phaser fight, commit serial murders for revenge, and request euthanasia because it's human), and dialogue (I mean, not that "Will you bind your sword to my quest?" isn't great dialog for a 1983 DOS-based text adventure.)

Honestly, I think even just making the holographic displays be essentially opaque floating LCARS screens would've been better. Having the holograms be essentially floating touchscreens. While it is perfectly reasonable for an human author to reap the fruits of his/her labour for a couple of years, it must be underlined that nothing is created in a vacuum and their work at some point is indebted to those who came before. After a while, these expresions should be given back for the next generation (pun intended) to build on.

If you're referencing the original _Macross_ series and _Macross Zero,_ I don't remember the UN Spacy developing holograms that early. (However, _DYRL?_ and illegitimate _Macross II: Lovers Again did_ have tactile holograms.) Now, the Zentradi had them in the original series, but- looking back- they weren't much better than what the MCU had: glowy lines, text and images floating on glass screens (Churchprise bridge, anyone?), although Britai's flagship did have a hologram projector floating over the rest of the bridge crew's heads.
It wasn't until years later in _Macross Plus_ and the Sharon Apple Incident where UN Spacy had access to Zentradi-level holograms.

I LOVE your idea of how better to use holographic displays. The ones they use on Picard would be a nightmare to use (let alone look at for more than 10 seconds). They are an example of lazy design. I heard Kurtsman saying he doesn't like spaceship 'P0RN'. But frankly that's one of the reasons so many people come to Star Trek. To look at the ships and design concepts of ALL functionality for those ships. To say this is yet another reason why he doesn't get Star Trek.
