I read that Captain Cook biography after you last recommended it. I knew absolutely nothing about him before going into it and I still really liked it. The first quarter of the book was a bit of a drag but once he got going on his Pacific adventures it kept me hooked.
My favourite in the series so far! Might get me a shake of a head, but I look for three things in the following priority order when taking a recommendation: 1. The Prose - how well written a book is 2. How good a story it tells 3. The subject matter and how much it interests me.
I read a giant biography of Hamilton by Ron Chernow and I loved it! Richard Brookhiser wrote a book about Hamilton that was much shorter and a decent intro to him. John Updike has a published talk called On Literary Biography in a book Due Considerations: Essays and Criticism. He suggests that the story of writers shows itself through their poems, short stories and novels if they are any good at writing.
