I didn't know Gene Hackman was a corps director back in the day

+Connor Pack Absolutely. These historic broadcasts had lots of big time musical and artistic giants.

After reading the comments I agree about the "inner workings and politics of DCI ... that is one of the reasons, also, why the Blue Stars didn't make finals for the first time in 1980.

My brother was a baritone in 1980 Blue Stars. Their show was great. They were surprised they didnt place 12th. Instead 13.

Interesting comments from Maynard about the entertainment factor and the Bridgemen ... I had never noticed his comments before

As an alumnus of the Bridgemen my biasness will show here, he was absolutely right! 😉

    What's with all the penalties?

    • @scvanguard1

There were a lot more rules back in the day. Dropping equipment, Picking up grounded items, going under time, going over time, stepping on the front boundary lines. Timing penalties back in this time was 0.1 for every 3 seconds, IIRC. That’s what most of those are. Timing and dropped equipment.

Man, the Phantom kids could have used a lesson or two in "keeping it together."

+tommytimp Perhaps you were thinking of the Blue Team, as they certainly didn't 'keep it together'. If not, a history lesson may be in order.

+jdavis57 Winners always went crazy back then. Runners-up used to keep it together. The Phantom camp had been running all summer on the assumption that this would finally be their year. Too bad they tatrumed a little at the end.

    • @jdavis57
      @jdavis57 8 років тому +8

So, that excused their not 'keeping it together'? This wasn't their first title. Show a little class. And trust me, no one in the Regiment camp 'assumed' anything, especially when it came to the inner workings of DCI.
And I still don't see what you are referring to. Apparently you have never finished 2nd three years in a row. Easy to criticize, much harder to sympathize.
      Crickets? Figures.

Phantom was notorious in this era for being bad sports about the competitive results.

Apparently, Marcus, you have been misinformed, or you're just ignorant. Either way, you are completely incorrect.

I always hated the Blue Devils. THe judges always gave them the undeserved championship

Sometimes they were undisputed--like 82, 86, 76, 94. 1979 was not that year IMO. I think their brass is unbelievable, but that show is downright boring in every other respect.

DC I killed the activity, ever since 1972 the activity has gone downhill. Today you cannot even find a real drum and bugle Corp. DCI today is nothing more than a marching band competition. This is just my opinion, so please don't get upset, it's called freedom of speech? January 8 2022

Without question, the transformation has been intentional, not evolutionary. Thanks to the low-life, marxist G. Hopkins and all of the enablers around him who went along to get along. I am 100% right. It is there staring us right in the face as we allowed it to happen.

I agree that it lost it's uniqueness. It's only going to get worse.
