He only sounds good because he's being backed by portnoy on that song. At this point, even mike portnoy has a better vocal range than labrie. It's just sad
Do you remember the DT passionate search for a new drummer on YT? It was so demanding and ruthless! Every video, discussion-absolutely everything-had to be flawless, because fans expect nothing less than perfection, which DT is known for. But when I listen to James now, I have to admit, it just doesn’t fit anymore. This isn’t about blaming anyone; it’s simply a fact that the material is incredibly demanding to sing. And when the voice goes, it goes. Some tough decisions need to be made…
I think that if they just half step down the songs it wouldn't be a problem. I remember seeing them for the Images and Words Anniversary Tour where all the songs from that album were down tuned and LaBrie sounded good tbh
i started watching the beginning of this video and was genuinely excited when the music began, familiar yet fresh, as Mike's drums breathed soul into this amazing quartet. Then James stepped in. Sounding like a crazy lady screaming at the cats, his voice oozed of a sound reminiscent of fingernails on a chalk board (for those of you who remember what that sounds like). Unacceptable at $200+ a ticket. Quite honestly, even with Mike back in the group, you couldn't pay me to go see them live. Glad Mike's back and, in my opinion, he is far superior to MM in this group but, like the Jets with Saleh, if DT is looking for lost years of perfection, the wrong person was replaced.
Age is a cruel thing, and everyone ages differently, but when you are in a top band that charges serious money for their shows, you just HAVE TO make an effort. And making an effort is not struggling to hit notes that you obviously can't hit. Let's put it into perspective, Steven Wilson is 56 and he is an all around perfectionist, vocally too, although he is not even a singer per se. Steve Hogarth is 68 and he still sounds great and sounded flawless when he was 61. Another genre, but I saw him live this year and was very impressed: Lenny Kravitz is 61 and just listen to his vocals from any show from the latest tour, they are quite stunning (whatever you think of his music). These guys still nail it, live too, because they exercise before tours, they keep to a certain diet, etc. In short, they CARE and make an effort to bring their bodies and vocals up to shape, as touring is not a walk in the park. This is called professionalism. Fish is 66 (younger than Hogarth), his voice is indeed shot and has been for a long time and no amount of care would probably help it now. He has been a hit and miss live BUT he is obviously making an effort, downtuning songs, playing to his best qualities (fan interaction, the atmosphere, narrative aspects of his songs, backing singers), because he obviously still cares. And is 61 even an old age nowadays? Adrian Belew (74) is in BEAT, David Gilmour (78! Ffs) is on his solo tour, just listen to their performances. It's a whole different quality and level of professionalism. But they are people who would not go on stage if they knew they could not deliver the goods. Sure, they may miss some notes here and there, but the tone, the consistency, and the feeling in the vocals are still perfectly intact. In comparison, LaBrie is... there's simply no comparison. It's like the band has so much fun with playing their songs (which I'm sure they do) that they forget James is even there. And James does not strike me as one who makes an effort to live up to the musical level of his bandmates.
Not to mention Michael Akerfeld (Opeth), switching between Growls and clean voice seamlessly. But he is totally relaxed. JLB tries to brutally force his voice, ruining it even more.
I mean, depending on the song LaBrie CAN sound good, like, I thought he was really good on scene two But yeah, I get that you can feel he's struggling a LOT You see, the man is 61 and I can see that he's doing his best, sure that some moments can be awkward hahah, but yeah, give the man a break He already went through a lot of hate from people about his voice, I hope on his recovery And as a tip, try to pull something like Daniel Hopkins from TesseracT, singing half a step or a step lower than the original song's vocals Let see yall haters try to pull a 40 year old career singing like that, he's doing his best, we can see that... at least
