    I had a brand new well drilled when I moved into my house, but I wanted to see what I needed to do to rejuvenate the old sand point for a hand pump backup. This video gave me EXACTLY the information I needed!

      @@homesforbeginners I got a first new home recently which has a sand point well in the basement hooked to a shallow well pump... Which may not have been ran for years. Would you say it's a bad idea to just try turning on the well pump to see what quality of water comes out? Or should I not do that and first pull out the sand point to see it's condition? Thanks

    Maybe be you could give me a tip. I have a 12ft deep sand point well . My Jet pump is about 10ft away in my shed. I am having problems trying to prime the Jet pump. I have a check valve installed about 12 inches from the pump. The pipe from the well is Tee'd into the shed on top of the tee I have a ball shut off valve on top of that I have a pitcher pump. Which is shut off to not let air in the line. ( I can get water with the pitcher pump sometimes I have to reprime) My question is since I don't have a foot valve If I put a check valve where the pipe comes out of the ground 10' away from my pump would it solve my priming issue. . Hopefully I am not sucking air in one of my 3 joints on my galvanized pipe attached to the sand point.

      Our setup doesn't have a foot value either. We have a check valve as well, it's intended to keep water in the line once it's primed. If you're not able to get water, the pump maybe worn, the check valve is leaking, or you have a leak somewhere else in the line.

    I have an old well guy telling me I can rig up a hose with an adapter threaded onto a metal pipe with holes and send it down moving the pipe up and down inside the point to clean it out.....
    I'm going to try that first because it seems much easier than jacking the current out. Mine is clogged with clay we hit on the way down but had water seeping in slowly when we "THINK" we hit water at 14 ft. the bottom two feet had muddy water in the point but not a lot. We sent a tape measure down which got muddy water from 0 to 2 feet but was dry above.
    You seem way smarter than me, thoughts?

    How much sediment should be coming up through the point? I have milkshake type consistency coming up after replacing the pump and I'm thinking this isn't normal.... It wasn't like this before and perhaps this is what burnt out my old pump, the failure of the point filtering?

    • @homesforbeginners
      @homesforbeginners  3 роки тому

      Sediment is not normal. Could be rust from the pipe and may clear out, but it can also be dirt coming from either a hole in the pipe or the mesh has deteriorated in the sand point. It would certainly cause a premature failure on the pump too.

    New well point is $50-$60. Depending on how often you need to clean it, replacing it may be cheaper and less labor intensive.

    Why not just purchase a new point while you have it out?They are not very expensive under 100$

      What may not seem expensive to you, maybe expensive to someone else.

      The time and money put towards fixing it could have just went to a new pipe that will work much better.

      @Homes for Beginners so it's cheaper to buy pvc, a gas mask, and acid than it is a new point? 😒 🤔

      I was thinking the same thing. The new ones are made of stainless steel and not as prone to corrosion as the older galvanized ones were. My local home improvement store sells 1-1/4 ones for $44.00

    you are dooingit the hard way. I've had a sand point for 40 years and I just use apple vinegar and baking soda. I've seen water coming through the sprinkers going 5 or 6 ft further afterwards

      Do you put it in the well while it's still in the ground or do you also pull it out?

      @@alexrusate1544 I placed a T on the top of the pipe and it comes up through the floor. I put in a box of baking soda and then have the plug ready and I use a glass mayo jar to pour in the vinegar and cap the top immediately. the pressure will clean out the screen in ground and increase the water flo

      I'm going to try this with mine at my cabin. Pump just burned up and I'm sure it's clogged. I'm gonna leave the vinegar and baking soda in the pipe for a week or two also to let it clean longer. Thanks!

    Why not just replace the steel pipes with PVC and a PVC screen?

    • @homesforbeginners
      @homesforbeginners  Рік тому

      Can't, it needs to be driven into the ground. PVC would just break otherwise.
