  • System Shock wasn't really on my radar for new games releasing but when i was offered a review code after seeing all the great reviews i was super interested in giving it a shot.
System shock was not the game i was expecting but that may be a good thing.
Todays video is all about the System Shock remake and why I didn't like it.
I'll be going over some talking points explaining why it may not be for everyone because it certainly wasn't for me despite loving immersive sims that were inspired by the original system shock like Prey 2017.
Just because i didn't like System Shock doesn't mean you won't either but yeah this is just my opinion.

"why am I playing this? I'm not having fun" that is exactly how I feel about Bioshock. Haven't played this yet but if it's like that I'll have to pass tbh. I live Prey tho. Feel like it took the imsim to another level

I fully agree with the criticisms. I think that System Shock is a good game if you’re into dungeon diving. Aka tight maze like corridors with up close combat. Like a dungeon. I didn’t like the System Shock Remake, because I’m not a huge fan of cyberpunk or dungeon diving, but I wanted to play System Shock for the story. Turns out there isn’t much story and the game real is just a cyberpunk dungeon dive.
I’m skipping it and moving to System Shock 2. The sequel is more of a traditional RPG with a much greater emphasis on narrative. So I’m looking forward to it for sure.

It seems that you do not have the taste for an immersive sim. That's the genre. It's a slow paced thoughtful style of gameplay. It's like an ironman game of Xcom, it's not something that you throw on to turn off your mind and blast away. It's slow, dark, stressful, methodical. It's a time to sit down and understand the deep nitty gritty details of a game an it's mechanics so you can build with then.
As for it being modernized? Hell yes it was. Not just the graphics the controls were updated. The original's controls put me off to play it since it controls like a graphing calculator. It predates modern control schemes, your default shoot was right click since you would be clicking through your inventory to fire. I suggest you take a look at mandalore gaming's vid on the original to get more of an understanding on how far this game has come.

He does have the taste for an immersive Sim! He says so several times in his review. Except for when it's immersive. Then he doesn't like it.

I keep seeing people throwing that term around a lot when it comes to System Shock, but I struggle to see what make it’s an “immersive sim”. Immersive? Sure. But in what ways is it a sim? An immersive sim is something like Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous. There is nothing sim-like about System Shock. If you want to label it anything, then it would be a dungeon diver. Same developers who made the original System Shock also made Ultima Underground and System Shock is basically just a cyberpunk version of that.

@@-CrimsoN- The term is an older one that refers to a specific style of game. Elite Dangerous wouldn't count as one because, while it is immersive, and a simulation, it doesn't fit the genre conventions. An immersive sim is usually a first person 3d RPG with a heavy emphasis on player choice in favor of emergent gameplay. The barriers you're encountering in the world are diegetic. In system shock for example you have Sho-dan's security systems tracking you and preventing you from getting into some places. Rather than needing to just get a skill high enough up to just pass a check, you are expected to figure that the security terminals and server hubs in the station are connected, and destroy them to remove her ability to have control over access. Or you may be unable to cross a gap to get to a good item. There is no "push button extend bridge" option. You need to decide if you're going to try and grenade hop the gap, or find a module that boosts your speed and jump it, or figure out if you could find a long enough plank to cover the gap. It's immersive because everything in the game runs by the same rules. I'd check out Shadows of doubt for a more modern example.

@@Randicore So then in that case what seperates something like Arx Fatalis from System Shock. Everything you described that is present in System Shock that defines it as a so-called "immersive sim" is also present in Arx Fatalis. With Arx Fatalis, you're getting a traditional fantasy setting over cyberpunk, but it has the same level of player choice. There is no hand-holding. Basically, if you can rationalize something, you can do it in the game. For example, creating food items can help with healing. How do you do that? You hunt and kill a creature. Strip the meat and then find a firepit to cook the meat. You drag the meat from the HUD into the firepit. Use a firespell to light the pit (assuming you have one) and then sit and wait for it to cook. How do you cast a firespell? You have to use your mouse to drag runes. in front of you. It also has the same level of decision when it comes to accessing rooms. Can't reach something? Better hope you have a levitate spell. Or maybe you will need to find a key from a guard. Maybe you can find something in the environment to distract the guard so you don't have to fight them. DIfference is that I'd struggle to find anyone who would label Arx Fatalis as an "immersive sim", despite Arx and System Shock sharing a lot of the same gameplay features. Labeling System Shock an "immersive sim", just comes off as contratrian and trying to put the game on a pedestal that it really doesn't belong on. Is System Shock a good game? Absolutely. But it's a cyberpunk dungeon diver. It's cyberpunk Ultima Underworld. No one labels Ultima Underworld an "immersive sim", I'm not seeing why System Shock would receive this label.

    • @Randicore
      @Randicore 5 місяців тому

@@-CrimsoN- It gets the labels because it's one of the founders of the genre and set the tone for everything going forward. It's not an absolute definition. Much like how Wolfenstine 3D doesn't fit the conventions of a modern FPS game, but they're still together. It just had less ability to present it at the time it was made.

02:30 this was my exact problem. They went too hard in the hands-off direction. Uninstalled after I got to the terrarium.

Visually you praise the remake but it is not really that good, as I have eye strain issues until I put the brightness to 100% because of the lack of a special atmosphere, exactly the same reason I cannot return to the original.

I've never played it before and I'm very glad I read EdG's comment and then watched the vid. This game is legendary, and the remake HAD to be a 'love letter' to the many fans, who I'm sure will love it. If I'd played it back in the day I'm sure I would too, but things were different then. Not least life in general (for me) when you had time to fully devote to immersion in just one game for months (sometimes - even if you didn't particularly love it!). Different days now, too many great games, too little time. I couldn't even get through Uncharted 3 or 4 a second time because of the slow bits and padding, let alone consider an Assassin's Creed game now!
Tldr; life is too short for games like this in this day and age!

i don't like the remake, i prefer the original. the remake imo adds so much unnecessary padding. like that puzzle it takes ages to solve is like a 10 second inconvenience in the original game. also the flying sections are a lot shorter.

It looks trapped in its time, very hard to get into from someone with no idea of the original. Maybe that’s not the target audience? Graphically looks great tho
