each time it hitched in the game wasn't an anomaly, you can see every time it froze it was loading a new asset or a new file of some kind for the scripted sequence where you look at your hands or when you initiate a glory kill for the first time, each time it runs the first time it has to read the relevant files to ram

Many servers you buy from HP boot from SD cards, oddly enough. I bought a few HP Proliant DL380 G8 servers a few years back and the OEM boot drives were SD cards that were in a small socket on the motherboard and connected via the SATA bus. Since the hypervisor only needs to be read from the storage once during boot and there was pretty much no IO during use it wasn't a big deal (although it was painfully slow).

I am however, pro rule of law, and any crime accused of a man is to be treated as an accusation, and well, the burden of proof is on the accuser in most courts of law. No, i realize this isn't a court, but really, until he actually goes to trial and in found guilty of the accusation, then this is all a moot point. If you really hate Linus, block his channels on UA-cam, and stop rumor mongering. We'll all know soon enough if he actually hurt a kid anyway, no need for you to falsely preempt the news.

Reminds me of a Dell server a former employer used. The computer boots a VMWare ESXi hypervisor from an SD card, allowing all of the SATA storage devices (in our case, this was a bunch of hard drives) to be used for storing VM images.
Ordinarily, I would never consider starting a computer from an SD card, but the ESXi hypervisor is pretty lightweight. I suspect that the system barely touches the SD card after the initial boot image loads.

What about SD cards with the A2 specification? Sandisk has some cards with this spec which allows for 1000+ IOPS.

It won't make a big difference. A huge factor in any drive (mechanical or SSD) performance is the embedded controller, and the controller in SD cards isn't designed for the sort of access you need in order to efficiently run programs from it. A better/more powerful microcontroller would add to the price, to the point you may as well just get an SSD that's designed for that task. Go compare benchmarks between low-end SSDs and higher-end ones with the same RAM type and you'll see the difference the microcontroller makes.

Fun fact, the issue with the inability to create a Windows To Go installation with Rufus from the ISO downloaded from the media creation tool was a problem with Rufus, which was subsequently fixed. Also performance should now be a lot better even using an SD card given the much better optimizations with windows RAM caching and To Go compatibility. I have a mini-ryzen build that I've been running exclusively off a 32gb usb 3.0 cheapo drive from amazon and it works better than my 7200rpm WD black 1tb drive so that's something
These videos are enjoyable, but just like the multi-cpu builds, the implementation is never quite optimal, and combing through the comments you can learn a lot about how others have worked with the windows scheduler to get pretty good performance off of many-core builds. And that was before the windows scheduler was given appropriate optimizations to prioritize higher speed cores for demanding content like with android and the Big/small core complexes. It'd be nice to see an updated video on the opteron/xeon many-core builds with all of these things taken into account, and even some more Windows To Go content, as the niche is what I believe LTT excels at covering, even if not to the best of its interest.

Linus, it's not 99% usage, it is 99% active time. You need to look at the resource monitor to see the proper statistics. The main one is the disk queue. Anything more than 1 tends to mean commands are getting queued. You'd feel a disk queue of 5 or more.

Way before the emergence of Windows To Go I tried running some really dinosaur OSes on SD cards. They are 8GB in capacity and 20MB/s in speed! To run Windows XP from those cards, you need to hack some registry entries and enable EWF (enhanced write filter), which uses system memory as write cache and flush it onto the card only at shutdown (or periodically, you can configure it). That way, the card receives read-only load most of the time, which it handles reasonably well. I think the experience was way better than running from a typical mechanical drive, even if the HDD had 60MB/s sustained speed! Only that it took about two minutes shutting down because of the cache flush.

  • @wwsvs

Not entirely sure what causes it, but I went through well over a hundred Win10 PCs and I can confirm the issue isn't necessarily related to the SD card. It happens more often with HDDs than SSDs, so the drive's R/W speed probably does influence it somewhat, but it's definitely a Win10 issue primarily.

Ram doesn't have persistence on data, so you can't power on a machine and pull data off of the ram.... You could load an entire OS into ram (windows would require at least 20 gigs + AFAIK) and then still it wouldn't have booted from ram, just be running solely on ram

11:40: Not "anomalies", just loading a resource for the first time. So if a game isn't loading a lot of stuff dynamically, it would be as smooth as on an SSD. But most games load stuff dynamically, especially games that uses very detailed environments.
I'd also like to add that most Linux file-systems are faster than anything from Windows, and XFS can actually increase i/o to a great extent compared to other file-systems, especially for spinning drives. But I think Linux would handle everything from an SD card a lot better. Especially as it's not updating secretly in the background.

You can install Windows to pretty much any rewritable media. All you need is a BIOS which can boot from it. Most machines can't boot directly from a fitted SD slot, though quite a lot of servers are happy to, with a slot ready on the system board. Some micro-SD cards come with a USB adapter - I have one plugged in to my laptop full time, because it sticks out only 1/4 of an inch. Booting from USB has been standard for about 20 years now.

Hey! I know this is 2 years later, but I also have an HP Pavilion dv7 multimedia laptop running Windows 7. I saw your comment and figured I could provide relevant information.
I have had general issues with overheating on HP laptops in the past, but the "100% CPU usage" issue you described reminded me of something that happened recently. It’s kind of complicated, but I’ll explain it the best way that I can. Stick with me here.
HP desktops (and laptops) come with proprietary OEM software and drivers, specifically Pavilion Entertainment PCs. They have specialized keyboards with hotkeys (Fn keys) and dedicated shortcut buttons that operate HP software and control media playback. The controller software is usually located in C:\HP\KBD, if I’m not mistaken. A KBD.exe program always runs in the background to monitor the user's keystrokes and execute shortcut commands when needed. Anyways, if something goes wrong with this software, it can peg your CPU usage to 100% and cause your computer to overheat and shut down to avoid damage to the motherboard.
I recently had an instance where I had to hunt down an older version of this HP KBD software for use with an old HP PS/2 keyboard via a PS/2-to-USB adapter on my laptop. Apparently, I must’ve installed the wrong version, or it might have conflicted with my laptop's existing keyboard, who knows? Because as soon as I would boot into Windows, it would max out my CPU, which slowed down the system to a crawl, and the laptop would shut down to prevent overheating. As soon as I deleted that software, it fixed the problem. My point is, plenty can go wrong when it comes to OEM software and drivers, particularly on HP Pavilion machines. It sounds like something went wrong when you upgraded to Windows 10. Maybe some proprietary piece of HP software/driver compatibility issue between Windows 7 and 10 caused it to bug out?
I’m not saying this has anything to do with your keyboard, but for your specific issue, I would investigate any HP software or drivers that might’ve gotten carried over when you upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Also, since it’s an older laptop with older hardware, Windows 10 also could’ve downloaded an incorrect driver automatically. Here’s what I did: when you boot Windows, boot into Safe Mode and set it to automatically run Task Manager. Then boot into normal mode and monitor your processes. Look at the CPU/usage column, and if you see one running at 99% or some crazy number, that’s your culprit. Click it and press the "delete" key to end that task, and that should free up the system memory enough for you to open the control panel and uninstall it.
Not sure if this helps at all, but since I’ve personally dealt with this issue on these Pavilion laptops, I figured I’d give my 2 cents. :)

Why bother? Windows is the cause of it's own bad performance while being bloated, meanwhile Linux runs fine on a slower class 10 SD just fine while being lighter and faster also while this is interesting or cool harddrives are still superior in speed and performance so it's probably better to just use that.

I'm running my homelab hypervisor off an SD card. It's a 1U server cira 2010 with an SD card slot on the motherboard only accessible from the inside for this exact reason.
Newer servers now have internally accessible usb type-a ports directly on the motherboard. The idea is to install your OS on this flash media and save your precious SAS/SATA drive bays for data storage drives instead of using them to run the OS.
The major difference between what Linus is doing with desktop windows and a server OS, especially a hypervisor, the OS has very few reads&writes to the SDCard once it's running.

Linus you can just clone the boot and system partition of any working installed Windows onto the removable drive or sdcard and it will boot fine. Paragon Partition Manager or some such can do it all under 20 minutes.

Id rather use robocopy (included with windows) then free software on the internets, much saver much faster less hassle.
But if space is an issue and you want just Windows (like is the case in this video), the only official way to do it (as far as i know anyway) would be the same way PXE boots are prepared (network deployment).
And that is lot more effort for just one install, better to do a fresh "to go" install in those cases.

It would be interesting to do an update on this but changing a few things. Like would using a different storage medium like CFExpress work better since it ties in using pcie lanes and the latest version even supports NVME. Does NVME's ability to use system RAM as a cache have an impact here? Does running the OS off a USB work better? Why? I would also be interested to know if a different operating system would help here. A main contender would be anything that is designed to run with a raspberry pi as the OS is designed to run off a SD card.
