@@Attacknun He meant you cant do a Windows-To-Go installation with this ISOs, which means installing Windows on the USB and booting from there (without any HDD or SSD). Ofc you can make a Windows 10 USB to install it on a computer.
Linus, it's not 99% usage, it is 99% active time. You need to look at the resource monitor to see the proper statistics. The main one is the disk queue. Anything more than 1 tends to mean commands are getting queued. You'd feel a disk queue of 5 or more.
"boot" "off ram" am i the only one who feels like this doesn't make sense? Ram doesn't have persistence on data, so you can't power on a machine and pull data off of the ram.... You could load an entire OS into ram (windows would require at least 20 gigs + AFAIK) and then still it wouldn't have booted from ram, just be running solely on ram
It is actually technically possible to do so and people have done them before, but you'd have to reinstall windows every time you shut the computer down since RAM is volatile.
What about SD cards with the A2 specification? Sandisk has some cards with this spec which allows for 1000+ IOPS. That should be able to run a OS much more decently. You should do a follow-up with that kind of SD card.
It won't make a big difference. A huge factor in any drive (mechanical or SSD) performance is the embedded controller, and the controller in SD cards isn't designed for the sort of access you need in order to efficiently run programs from it. A better/more powerful microcontroller would add to the price, to the point you may as well just get an SSD that's designed for that task. Go compare benchmarks between low-end SSDs and higher-end ones with the same RAM type and you'll see the difference the microcontroller makes.
Why bother? Windows is the cause of it's own bad performance while being bloated, meanwhile Linux runs fine on a slower class 10 SD just fine while being lighter and faster also while this is interesting or cool harddrives are still superior in speed and performance so it's probably better to just use that.
@@puns0 there is a windows 10 free version which has this watermark, also if ur not gonna game on a PC an iPad will do better in regular usage while being cheaper
Fun fact, the issue with the inability to create a Windows To Go installation with Rufus from the ISO downloaded from the media creation tool was a problem with Rufus, which was subsequently fixed. Also performance should now be a lot better even using an SD card given the much better optimizations with windows RAM caching and To Go compatibility. I have a mini-ryzen build that I've been running exclusively off a 32gb usb 3.0 cheapo drive from amazon and it works better than my 7200rpm WD black 1tb drive so that's something These videos are enjoyable, but just like the multi-cpu builds, the implementation is never quite optimal, and combing through the comments you can learn a lot about how others have worked with the windows scheduler to get pretty good performance off of many-core builds. And that was before the windows scheduler was given appropriate optimizations to prioritize higher speed cores for demanding content like with android and the Big/small core complexes. It'd be nice to see an updated video on the opteron/xeon many-core builds with all of these things taken into account, and even some more Windows To Go content, as the niche is what I believe LTT excels at covering, even if not to the best of its interest.
11:40: Not "anomalies", just loading a resource for the first time. So if a game isn't loading a lot of stuff dynamically, it would be as smooth as on an SSD. But most games load stuff dynamically, especially games that uses very detailed environments. I'd also like to add that most Linux file-systems are faster than anything from Windows, and XFS can actually increase i/o to a great extent compared to other file-systems, especially for spinning drives. But I think Linux would handle everything from an SD card a lot better. Especially as it's not updating secretly in the background.
Sometimes I feel that all of Linus' experience and know-how trump mine many times over... and then I find out that he's never made a Windows to Go image before. Thanks for the boost to my self-esteem, Linus 😅
Jeremiah Felix Sobrevilla You're telling me you've never once tried to make one? Even just to say that you could as a kind of weird Windows "live distro"?
Angelo Stevens nice b8, by the way. Pedophilia sure does relate to making bootable live disks. No, i am not pro pedophilia. I am however, pro rule of law, and any crime accused of a man is to be treated as an accusation, and well, the burden of proof is on the accuser in most courts of law. No, i realize this isn't a court, but really, until he actually goes to trial and in found guilty of the accusation, then this is all a moot point. If you really hate Linus, block his channels on UA-cam, and stop rumor mongering. We'll all know soon enough if he actually hurt a kid anyway, no need for you to falsely preempt the news.
I'm running standard Ubuntu installed in such a way that it thinks the USB drive is just a regular drive, with memory managed in the standard default way.
The 100% disk activity was more than likely two things. Windows updates and virus scans from Windows Defender. I've seen both of these things on my SSD and mechanical drives.
Not entirely sure what causes it, but I went through well over a hundred Win10 PCs and I can confirm the issue isn't necessarily related to the SD card. It happens more often with HDDs than SSDs, so the drive's R/W speed probably does influence it somewhat, but it's definitely a Win10 issue primarily.
don't forget "CompatTelRunner.exe" or Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry... that also slows down a pc and send random info from your computer to microsoft
the only way that could happen is if you have WAY too many background apps running. I have an HDD and it is having less than 50ms response times right now (yes, its my system disk and I'm on windows 10)
I'd like to see Linus react to setting up and using my 80486. I would even be kind and let him install Wing Commander 2. With speech packs and Secret Missions. ;) Dx2-66 8mb ram 1mb EISA/VLB graphics card. 450mb Hd (double spaced) :) Best computer I ever gamed on.
That SD card would be burned to a crisp very quickly. Especially with all the writes and rewrites Windows 10 does. Don't even try to do a major update. That might take you a week :-).
It depends what kind of stick / card you are using, there exist for example since years Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 sticks which can handle quite a few TBW. They use a real SSD controller though and output SMART values. I was personally running Windows XP on a Transcend SLC! CF card (4GB) for a long time, it kept swapping a lot of data and the CF card is even nowadays still alive and in perfect shape. It emulated a proper IDE drive in the thin client hence XP could be installed without any trouble.
It DID do a major update. Did you not see "Getting devices ready" screen. And notice that the initial disc install had (c) 2015, didn't have the action center right of the clock, didn't have the people icon on the task bar, and had light context menu. After upgrade, he got at least the fall creators update, with all the aforementioned features.
I don't understand why Linus is surprised that games run smooth. Obviously a good part of the game is already loaded onto the RAM and hence the decent performance right?
Time was the drive speed was a much bigger factor in game performance. Also, I think he was basing it off of older systems with far, far less RAM. On XP for example it would be paging a lot.
I laughed so hard lol, was very entertaining as I had the same idea but you have done all the hassle for me and Imma let that go but check this out. Using microsd as an external extra storage for your macbooks *head blown right * 😂 Thanks again for the experience
I hate Windows 8.1 and 10, I always know when there exist a uppdate as then suddenly CPU fan start sounding like F16 with full afterburner at takeoff.... And the CPU usage does not go back from 100 - 200% (turbo boosting ) until the update has been installed, also it has not helped on this to turn of uppdate and checking for uppdates....
yeah , I installed a new usb network adapter . was a bit slow loading and stuff plus speedtests were shit . Then I realised it was downloading and installing updates. Then I rebooted , after that it ran much better problems loading pages plus 5 mb/s before then after , smooth running plus around 70 mb/s .
It's amazing that your first self built computer was 128 gigs. I believe my first self built computer was less than 100mb. I remember 16mb of ram being mind blowing. Love the videos and nostalgia binges!
My first machine had a 40 Mb Hard drive and 2 MB of Ram running on an Intel 80386 SX. I thingk the OS was DOS 6.2. WordPerfect was the word processor of choice.
Yeah. Doom is a really well optimized game when it comes to its assets/memory management. If you got the right amount of RAM and VRAM to store all the level's rendering and sound data, the only data that gets streamed from the storage is some of the audio files (musics for example) and Shader's compilation and recompilation (which is when the texture are then stored in the RAM or VRAM based on what's done with them.) Any games that put heavy emphasis toward the storage content would clearly suffer from this setup. I would be curious about how a game like No Man Sky would fare in this setup.
13:25 I know that feel Linus, yesterday I was shopping for a mini usb cable for some shitty iPhone dock I have at work, and the girl working at the store was like "Ummm there's no such thing as a mini usb, you have a micro usb, lightning and type c" I just mumbled something like "It's a older standard" and left the store because I could literally feel my hair turning gray, damn I feel it only was 2-3 years ago I used a mini usb cable for my HTC Wizard
As someone who has a very modern rig with an SSD, and an older rig with a WD "Green" 5400rpm HDD, this is what I hate about Windows 7, 8 and 10. It's not "entirely" the drive's fault. Yes, Windows runs like crap on slower drives, but I've installed other OS's like Linux and macOS on the same drive, and they didn't perform anywhere NEAR as badly. As you clearly just saw, Windows tries to do a million little reads and writes at the same time as soon as it boots up, and taxes the drive without actually getting hardly any real apparent usage on the Task Manager. The other OS's don't "flood" the drive with a million tasks at once on boot. Modern Windows in general just expects an SSD with insane random read/write performance. And it makes older or slower drives look much worse than they actually are.
the reason why DOOM performed good is while in the loading screens, the SD card was copying files to the RAM and the game would lag when loading new chunks
Alex Kr and here’s a rhetorical answer for your rhetorical question, no, I don’t know of such a thing because I’m new to pc building and stuff like that 😃😃😃(ITS A JOKE)

I remember ogling 1gig drives in catalogs when I was a teenager. They were around 4 inches tall by 6 inches wide by eight inches deep. You would have to sacrifice one of your floppy drive slots to fit it in.
I could see it if you were building some sort of tablet thing or something, that might work, but without the buffer on a controller, it'll be kinda garbage(as seen in this video)
boilingdark ive actually done that by mistake with an hdd a long time ago, i think most of the stuff became corrupted and the drive became unbootable. i actually had to salvage my data using a linux usb boot drive....
linux is the best for hdd related stuff, yesterday i took an hdd that windows didnt even say it was conected and in linux i format it so it became usefull again.
Wouldn't that be the same sort of scenario as a power out? (ie. a hard power off?) Windows recovers from that all the time, it asks you if you want to perform a scan and fix. Not a problem.
Linus Tech Tips should make video on Linus using only Linux Manjaro KDE for one month. manjaro.org/ Manjaro KDE is rolling just like Windows 10 but superior than Windows 10 including updates/upgrades.
Anthony Fleming Puppy Linux is made for this type of operation. I have puppy arcade installed on a 16 gig flash drive that split into two partitions. Sb1 is where the operating system is, sb2 is simply for storage of games and media and the like. I've been using it for about 2 years now with no degradation. Puppy is good because my computer has 16 gigs of RAM and puppy runs in Ram. It does not wear out the drive with constant writes and rewrites it only saves the file and you can control when saves or it will save your session when you shut down
It's still advisable to always install from the latest ISO instead of using a super old one and having it update, nobody should do that. It's cleaner and faster, plus there are SOME (very few, but still) features that are actually only enabled if you fresh install a newer version of Windows 10 but that are DISABLED by default when you do an upgrade (for example, Upgraded installs will still have SMB1 enabled while fresh installs disallow it by default and fresh installs will also come with a new and prettier theme for the command prompt while upgrades keep the old theme)
It should only lag when it's loading some type of an asset into RAM (like your death animation, headshot animation/icon) stuff that isn't always in use
but those computers also have storage in them, i mean an OS running purely on a network drive. maybe even try to run 2 different pc's from the same network drive, and see if that would work. EDIT: with the 1(0?) Gbit internet at LMG there would be almost no latency, and the issue Andoid User stated would be solved.
I did that on 32gb micro sd card class 10 for my kids laptops and they used them for 3 months before I got the actual ssd for the laptop. They actually played Roblox and Mine Craft lol. A little slow yes but doable.
Windows from the start, should be able to easily boot and run from a read only SD Card. The failure of microsoft to design the OS to actually behave like a real time ROM burned in OS is inexcusable at this age of development. Modified code - separate from the read only C:/Windows directory, personal files separate from the Windows/Modified/and Programs. Windows needs a clean update / redesign to run from a flash drive, keychain thumb drive & 8GB of RAM. This should be easy, as a default setup choice - Option X: Install windows to a Flash Drive and run from a Read Only Directory.
Linus you can just clone the boot and system partition of any working installed Windows onto the removable drive or sdcard and it will boot fine. Paragon Partition Manager or some such can do it all under 20 minutes.
Id rather use robocopy (included with windows) then free software on the internets, much saver much faster less hassle. But if space is an issue and you want just Windows (like is the case in this video), the only official way to do it (as far as i know anyway) would be the same way PXE boots are prepared (network deployment). And that is lot more effort for just one install, better to do a fresh "to go" install in those cases.
Me looking at control panel: Ok.. my Windows is activated (very legit). Me watching this video at 4:51 : Wait, didn't I saw "Windows is activated" in the control panel?

Rui Oliveira I was surprised Linus didn't catch on to this. His "anomalies" were the game requesting files that weren't already in the RAM.
Cool, a sponsor I can use!
Linus, it's not 99% usage, it is 99% active time. You need to look at the resource monitor to see the proper statistics. The main one is the disk queue. Anything more than 1 tends to mean commands are getting queued. You'd feel a disk queue of 5 or more.
Ok time to replace my HDD's with SD Cards.

Ram doesn't have persistence on data, so you can't power on a machine and pull data off of the ram.... You could load an entire OS into ram (windows would require at least 20 gigs + AFAIK) and then still it wouldn't have booted from ram, just be running solely on ram
Ever heard of ramdisk..?
It is actually technically possible to do so and people have done them before, but you'd have to reinstall windows every time you shut the computer down since RAM is volatile.
Oh, look, Windows 10 running the disk at 100%. Seems normal!
TwilightWolf032 Had to tweak so much stuff to stop that lul.
How tf do I fix it

What about SD cards with the A2 specification? Sandisk has some cards with this spec which allows for 1000+ IOPS.
That should be able to run a OS much more decently. You should do a follow-up with that kind of SD card.
It won't make a big difference. A huge factor in any drive (mechanical or SSD) performance is the embedded controller, and the controller in SD cards isn't designed for the sort of access you need in order to efficiently run programs from it. A better/more powerful microcontroller would add to the price, to the point you may as well just get an SSD that's designed for that task. Go compare benchmarks between low-end SSDs and higher-end ones with the same RAM type and you'll see the difference the microcontroller makes.
now we need sony to make one for this type of uses
Sony is so consumer unfriendly that they would never even think about making your experience smoother, easier or cheaper
Sony is selling ssds for that type of use
But why? Why does anyone want Windows on an SD card.
Why bother? Windows is the cause of it's own bad performance while being bloated, meanwhile Linux runs fine on a slower class 10 SD just fine while being lighter and faster also while this is interesting or cool harddrives are still superior in speed and performance so it's probably better to just use that.
but LINUX doesn't natively support every single windows game.

I have a mini-ryzen build that I've been running exclusively off a 32gb usb 3.0 cheapo drive from amazon and it works better than my 7200rpm WD black 1tb drive so that's something
These videos are enjoyable, but just like the multi-cpu builds, the implementation is never quite optimal, and combing through the comments you can learn a lot about how others have worked with the windows scheduler to get pretty good performance off of many-core builds.
Good sir and/or madam, 4 years later, Rufus made my Steam Deck Windows 10 drive on a MicroSD card and performance is GREAT. =D

Mike Trieu yeah, WTG is a tad bit obscure. A tad.
Jeremiah Felix Sobrevilla You're telling me you've never once tried to make one? Even just to say that you could as a kind of weird Windows "live distro"?
Angelo Stevens this relates how? Also, innocent until proven guilty in a competent court of law.
Mike Trieu i have. I'm just saying not everyone can or have made WTG installs.
I've been booting Linux from a USB flash drive for quite some time now, a regular flash drive not an SSD, and it works just fine.
Some versions of Linux I believe, at least some some Hypervisors put everything in RAM, so the experience is much better.
I'm running standard Ubuntu installed in such a way that it thinks the USB drive is just a regular drive, with memory managed in the standard default way.
There’s a active windows popup. I didn’t realise that I was watching it on my phone.
The 100% disk activity was more than likely two things. Windows updates and virus scans from Windows Defender. I've seen both of these things on my SSD and mechanical drives.
Heh, one more reason to use Linux.
Still better than the HDD that came in my Alienware Alpha
the only way that could happen is if you have WAY too many background apps running. I have an HDD and it is having less than 50ms response times right now (yes, its my system disk and I'm on windows 10)
When I used WIn 98, I had an HDD that had 2.5MB/s of transfer rate... good times taking 40min installing windows

It emulated a proper IDE drive in the thin client hence XP could be installed without any trouble.
cptcrogge cool.

Exact. But this is linus.
Lol true
i think the surprise was that it had an unexpected loading time, much faster than he tought, the rest is filler
Time was the drive speed was a much bigger factor in game performance. Also, I think he was basing it off of older systems with far, far less RAM. On XP for example it would be paging a lot.

WordPerfect was the word processor of choice.
my first was 10mb hdd with Stacker software installed. this was for Dune 2 (10mb approx) to fit in. RAM was 1mb. and it was 2mhz 286 PC
My first computer had 64kb RAM and no storage. We were using cassette players at that time to load the programs written in Basic!
6gb for first one I built, 64kb for the first one I used 😅
This sounds like a bad idea (even in 2019)
The lag from doom was when loading new assets into ram I think
Yeah. Doom is a really well optimized game when it comes to its assets/memory management. If you got the right amount of RAM and VRAM to store all the level's rendering and sound data, the only data that gets streamed from the storage is some of the audio files (musics for example) and Shader's compilation and recompilation (which is when the texture are then stored in the RAM or VRAM based on what's done with them.)
Any games that put heavy emphasis toward the storage content would clearly suffer from this setup. I would be curious about how a game like No Man Sky would fare in this setup.
this brought me back to my high school days running Windows XP of an SD card because my HDD broke and i didn't have any money to buy a new one.

So much this
the reason why DOOM performed good is while in the loading screens, the SD card was copying files to the RAM and the game would lag when loading new chunks
I think you could easily install a Full Linux System and Work with it, just from the SD Card.
Have you heard about Linux live usb ? (Rhetorical question )

For me installing W10 on a HDD takes like two days because it needs tons of updates
Lol. I'm still using the same iso for a year or so and installs take about 20 minutes. Sounds more like a shit computer rather than a Windows problem.
125GB on your first PC? - mine had something like 80 MB and it was huge for its time :-)

The c partition of that bench is prob too big/full for that SD card with all the games installed for the benchmarks
